Rhythm of Love (UN-EDITED)

Hospital Beds, Zeus and Rainfall

"Ms. Brighton, he's over here." I heard the nurse say as she led me to a room. To be specific, it was room B-126. I felt my arm hit the door way as I walked into the room. I felt slightly disoriented from my anxiousness. I wanted-- no, I needed to see my dad.

The curtains were open so the sun could shine in. My father laid there with his eyes on one of his papers. "Dad," I managed to croak out. He looked at me, gracefully.

"Rydell, you're mother didn't tell me you were in Kelowna." He said as he sat up in his bed. He put his papers aside and took off his reading glasses. I could tell that he was happy. I walked over to take a seat next to the bed.

"Yeah. I made sure to come. Dad, you mean the world to me." I said letting him know. I had my hand on his and he was being stubborn. He always pretended to be okay. Never once did he go to the doctor's. Men were usually stubborn.

The way his hospital gown looked on him made him seem like he had no life. His saddened expression was covered by his forced smile. It hurt me knowing he was in some discomfort.

"How has your music career been going?" He decided to ask to break the awkward silence.

"Yeah. It's been going great. I got a couple of good gigs. I met a couple of great people to work with. I've kind have been more into dancing right now." I explained with a small smile. He was so happy that I was going following my dreams.

"That's great. And Jesse-- where is he right now?" My dad questioned. Jesse and my father were so close growing up. Before Jesse left for Chicago they had an argument and they never really made up. Deep down they both wanted to talk to each other. Two stubborn men weren't easy to break.

"Jess and mom are going to be on their way in a little bit. They went to pick up some stuff first." I explained.

The IV that was connected to my dad was a different sight. I never expected that I would see him like this. His hair was thinning, just like his blood. My father was fairly young with children the age of Jesse and I. On the window sill there lay flowers, cards and other gifts of the sort. Books were piled up by my dad's nightstand. His television hung up off the wall. A couple of chairs were by the small table that were setup right in front of the window.

"I've missed him." He admitted with a small sigh.

"He's missed you too." I paused silently. "So when do you start chemotherapy?"

"Monday." He answered sternly.

We were quiet for a while. "Dad, I love you so much. Please know that, all right?" I felt the lumps happening in my throat. My eyes watered, slightly. I couldn't fight it anymore.

He embraced me into a tight hug. "Rydell, I love you too. I promise that I will try my best to work through this. I'll be fine, okay?" He looked at me in assurance. I nodded as I planted a kiss on his left cheek.

"I'm going to grab some water." I said as I got out of my seat. I walked out of the room and immediately saw all the people who were in here with the same thing: cancer. Nurses were rushing back and forth. People being moved to different rooms. It was all so over whelming. I couldn't handle this. My dad was going to be in the battle of his lifetime.

I broke down and cried. I leaned against the wall and brought my knees up to my face. I buried my face in my knees and let the tears fall. One by one, Niagra Falls occurred.

It was so cloudy. I knew that it would soon be raining. Zeus had his head rested on my lap. We always came down here when we needed to think. His emotions were alike to mine. The wind made the waves crash against the rocks. It wasn't quiet, but it was very peaceful. The moss that I had been seated on was very comfortable.

This part of the lake reminded me of the ocean. It was clear. There were no trees in sight looking ahead. If you were to turn around you would find a forest full. Tall trees, the darkness that it gave off was astonishing. It was surely the Okanagan Valley though.

"Zeus, it's going to be a tough little while. I hope you're up to be a good friend." I said while I stroked him on his head. He just looked over at me and repositioned his head.

I attempted to try and change my thoughts. The only thing, or person I should say, I could think of was Carey. My next door neighbor. I could hardly remember what he looked like. In my mind, I do remember him looking familiar. Carey.

A little drop hit my cheek; following a few more drops. Soon there was a flood of rain pouring down. I got up in an instance. Zeus got up and started shaking around in the rain. "Time to go, bud." I said talking to my very irresponsive dog.

It rained on. I was running home at first, but soon found enjoyment in the wet rain. The coldness tingled on my skin. It felt refreshing and made me feel slightly numb. It took away the pain in my heart. It sounded very stupid, but very reasonable at the time. Zeus was having a blast aswell.

A black Dodge RAM pulled up next to me. The windows were slightly tinted, but they rolled down the windows. I squinted at the driver; unsure of who he was, exactly. "Rydell, it's me, Carey!" I heard the familiar face yell.

This was just slightly awkward. "Um-- hello." I said as the rain hit my face. My soaking hair was extremely messy. I could care less right now. A grin spread across my face. Of course he had to see me looking like this; feeling like this. I was a complete depressed mess.

"Get in here." He ordered. I just stood there in the cold, numb, rain. It made me felt alive for once. "Rydell, come on. I'm not letting you walk home in this weather. You can put Zeus in the back of the truck." I obliged and got into the mysterious truck. I pushed Zeus into the back of the truck. He didn't mind the rain. He loved it.

"I'm sorry for getting your car wet." I quietly apologized. I didn't dare to make eye contact with him. It was too intiment for me. I was used to being alone. That's the way it always was. I was scared of getting close to someone, yet again. Everything was meant to be broken.

"It's fine." He brushed off. "So, where were you coming from?" He asked, glancing over at me. I heard the slight sound of country music playing. Oh, how I loved country music. Dierks Bentley was singing Home.

"Um, just a walk." I vaguely explained.

"Oh."

There came the awkward silence. "So you like country?" I asked picking up one of his CDs that were on the console. It was Kenny Chesney's latest album. One of my favorites.

He smiled over at me. "Yeah, do you like it?"

"I love it." I corrected.

The wipers on his truck went back and forth making a sort of, swish sound. His eyes were glued to the road. Occasionally, I'd see him look over at me and shoot a small smile. Every time our eyes met I felt guilty.

"We're here." He said as we pulled up to my driveway. The truck was in park. Carey looked over at me as I unbuckled my seatbelt.

"Thank you for the ride, Carey." I thanked before opening the door and hopping down.

"Anytime, Rydell."

I walked behind the truck and pulled the latch down so Zeus could hop down. He instantly ran to the fence and awaited me to open it. I jogged up to him, but before opening the fence I turned around to wave goodbye one last time. I wanted to leave him on good terms.

"Come on, boy." I lead him to the back deck. I slid in threw the back door and let him run inside. I saw the mud and wet tracks he left. I groaned and ran to get a towel.

"Zeus, get back here!" I yelled and he playfully ran away. God, I love him I thought to myself. After catching the dog I dried him off and let him do his own thing.

I went into the kitchen to find my mom hovering over the stove. "So who was that who dropped you off?" She asked first thing. I could see the small smile on her face. She thought I was seeing someone; like that would happen. There were very few people close to me.

"Um-- that neighbor." I decided to call him. I didn't need her knowing that we were actually acquainted with each other. I wouldn't live it down.

"Oh. A very nice boy, isn't he?" She said as she prepared her meal.

"Yeah, lovely." I spoke, nonchalantly. "Hey do you know where Jess is?" I asked, interested.

She wiped off her hands on her towel. "He went to the store to grab some stuff. He should be back soon though. Why?" She replied.

"I was going to ask if he wanted to go into the city after lunch to go do something. To get our mind off stuff. Also spend some time together. I wanted to catch up with him." I explained, leaning on the wall. I looked down to see the innocent dog walking by with some type of toy.

"Yeah. You guys should do that. It's been a while." She smiled.
