Lie and Tie

Tyler’s POV

I woke up feeling empty, hollow, and miserable. I went and took an extra long shower before heading down to breakfast. I grabbed my food and sat at a table as far away from everyone else as possible. I just pushed my food around the plate and stared at it glumly.

“Mind if I we join you?” I looked up to see two couples in their seventies.

“Not a problem.” I said and motioned towards the rest of the table. They took their seats and the older lady who had asked if they could sit spoke up, “Didn’t your mother ever tell you not to play with your food?” I sighed and gave her a small smile and nod. The two women looked at each other and then at me sympathetically. The same women who had spoke before then introduced everyone to me, “I’m Margaret and this is my husband Wally. And these are our best friends, Randy and his wife MaryAnn.”

“I’m Tyler.”

“So, Tyler, what’s got you so down that you aren’t even eating?” asked MaryAnn.

“Just relationship issues.”

“What type of issues?” prodded MaryAnn.

“I don’t want to bother you guys with them. It’s really ok.”

“No. it’s not ok. We want to help so come on, tell us.” intercepted Margaret.

I sighed and looked at them knowing I now had no choice but to tell them.

“Ok well Ashley and I have been dating for two months. On our first date she told me that she could not stand hockey. I’m a professional hockey player. All I wanted was a second date, so I told her I worked at a law firm.” I paused and saw the two women looking at me sad and dreamy and the two men looking at me with curiosity. “I never told her the truth and she thought I was working at the law firm for the entire time we’ve been dating. Then last night she somehow found out that I had been lying to her this whole time and called me and broke up with me.”

Margaret put her hand on top of mine and said, “Honey, what is it that you think made you never tell the truth?”

“Honestly, I couldn’t - and still can’t - imagine my life without her. Before her I dated a few girls but none of them made me nervous like this, none of them could make me see my future with them. I used to envision that ten years down the road I would hopefully be married and have the beginnings of my own family. Now I see myself as married to her with our own family. I just couldn’t risk all that over something that seemed so trivial.”

Randy and Wally looked at each other and shifted in their seats before Randy spoke up, “Well, son. To me it sounds like you’re in love with her. Have you ever told her that?”

“Well, no. I’ve said that I love her but never that I’m IN love WITH her. I didn’t even think about it as that until last night.”

This time Wally spoke, “Well, sport. How long until you go back home?”

“We have another game against the Rangers tomorrow night and then we fly back so I’ll be there the following morning.”

Randy leaned forwards, “My advice, and I’m sure Wally will agree with me, is that you don’t want to lose this girl. She obviously has become a part of you. If I were you I would play damn well tomorrow night and leave it all on the ice. Then I’d hop on that plane and as soon as it landed I would get her back. Tell her everything about how you feel. Go further than what you told us today and make her want the same dream. Make her want you and give her the ability to ignore your career choice. Make her fall in love with you.” I looked up and they all nodded that they agreed with what Randy had just said. I noticed Zee standing a little ways off waving to me that we had to get to the bus now.

“Thank you. Thank you all so much for your help. I have to go to practice now, but I won’t forget a single word of your advice.” I stood up and Margaret and MaryAnn both got up and gave me hugs. I shook hands with both Randy and Wally. As I was shaking Wally’s hand he said, “Good Luck, in both your love life and your game tomorrow. We’ll be cheering for the Bruins.”

“Thank you.” I left them with one last smile and headed out to the bus.

Ashley’s POV

I woke up the next day with red puffy eyes from all the crying. Trisha was still asleep next to me and snoring. I got up and walked down the hall to the bathroom to wash my face. Standing there looking at myself in the mirror I felt empty and sad. I walked into my bedroom and pulled out my laptop to look at the Bruins schedule. They had another game in New York tomorrow night and then they were coming home. That seemed so far away but yet so close to now. Just then I felt the bed dip as Trisha sat down. She was looking at me with concern etched all over her face.

“I don’t know what you’re doing on that thing but I have to go to class, okay? I don’t want you breaking anything or getting all emotional again while I’m gone. I’ll take really good notes for you because I know you aren’t going today. As soon as classes are over I’ll pick up some food for dinner and I’ll come right here.” I nodded my head at her and gave her a smile and a hug. She got up and a minute later I heard my front door close.

I sat there staring at my computer as it played through the highlights from last night’s Bruins game. Tyler had looked so happy only to get a bitchy call from me. I slammed my laptop closed and got up to get my mail. When I opened my door Mrs. Robinson was just getting to her door.

“Oh hello sweet heart!” she called down to me.

“Morning Mrs. R” as I turned back to head into my apartment I had an idea and whipped around, “Wait Mrs. Robinson can I ask you a favor?”

“Certainly dear. What can I do for you?”

“I was wondering if you would be able to pick my mail up for me for a couple of days.”

“Of course I can. Are you going to visit your family?”

“Umm Yeah. I am.”

I got back inside and threw a bunch of things into my suitcase. I brought it downstairs and threw it in my car and left. It had been a spur of the moment decision and I had left my laptop in my apartment along with my phone. The only electronic device I had brought was my iPod I used when I went for runs. I plugged that into my car and blasted my music all the way out of Boston.
