The Marathon

Katie made sure to take her last swig of water at the beginning of the race. The date was April 15th and she was ready to take on her third Boston Marathon, aiming for a time of around 4 hours and 15 minutes, trying to beat her previous times of 4:50:29 and 5:19:30.

She glanced over at her best friend, Cara Deion, standing in the crowd mixed with families and viewers. Cara gave a huge smile and put two thumbs up.

Thank God I have Cara, she thought to herself.

She needed somebody to support her since she didn't really have any more family in her life. Her dad was in Afghanistan, her brother was off in college at Michigan State, and her mother was... well, out of her life. Not dead, just not in Katie's life, but she had no problem with that.

The race began and Katie went with a steady pace to begin with, near the front of the group. She looked at the crowd for a few minutes. Lots of families, a few signs, a bunch of teenagers and volunteers everywhere.

She smiled to herself and kept running.

2 hours in, Katie was feeling good about her position so far. She'd reached the 14th mile and only stopped for water twice.

Less than half way to go, she thought to herself, 26.2 miles my ass. See ya later Wellesley, off to Newton.

Near the 3:55 mark, Katie was already on Boylston and had a huge smile on her face. Cara was going to be waiting for her near the family meeting area at the John Hancock building.

After a good 14 minutes or so of trying to stay with her pace, the time was 4:08:58 and Katie had never felt more tired. The finish line was about 70 yards in front of her.
Katie
C'mon, you can do this. You gotta sprint, you gotta do it. Finish strong, I thought to myself as I was about 70 yards away. I sprinted and got about 50 feet from the finish line, when suddenly a blast shook me from the ground.

Before I knew it I was on my back, my ears ringing and muffled from the blast. I could barely hear and I just looked around blankly at the hundreds of screaming spectators and runners, at the blood on the streets and the blood on my leg.

Blood on my leg? Oh no. Oh shit, no. No. I looked down at my legs to see 1 to 3 inch metal shards sticking out of my calfs and thighs, only one on my right leg.

People around me were starting to get up, and cops were everywhere. Suddenly another blast went off and more screams erupted, more scared people running for safety, away from the blasts.

Suddenly I was thrusted up by someone and held in their arms as they ran me to a medical tent. The last thing I remember was seeing a black shirt put me down in front of a doctor, and seeing a pair of grey eyes go wide as they looked down at my mangled body.

Notes

**Sorry, the first chapter is a little short!**
Being from Boston, I know a few people who got injured from this so it's kind of personal... but I'm sorry I had to start it this way! It will make the story a lot better in the end, you'll see. There's always good in the bad, and there's always helpers.
I know Tuukka wasn't at the Marathon (yes, he was Katie's rescuer. breathe), but this is fanfiction so for this story's sake, he was there.
I'm a bit new to this, but I'm trying my best! I'm already planning the next few chapters so hopefully I don't hit writers block. Let me know if there's anything you guys would like to see since this is still on the drawing board!
Thanks guys, y'all are the best.

PS- Seguins trade...

gonna miss dat piece of ass
