Opposites Attract
His Jersey
Katie was woken up by a kiss from Tuukka. She smiled and looked over at the clock on the nightstand. 8:00 am.
"Hey, sweets. I have practice at 10, so I figured we could get a small breakfast then I could drop you off at your apartment."
"That sounds good, I have a class at 10:30."
She got up and they cleaned up the dishes from last night. Tuukka grabbed his bag for practice and was ready to go.
They left his apartment and went to get breakfast.
"Come on, let's just go to Dunkin Donuts," Katie said. "America runs on Dunkin."
"First of all I'm Finnish, and second of all, I want to go somewhere we can sit down."
"Ugh Tuukka we can sit down in Dunkin Donuts though! I don't want you to be late for your practice."
"I won't be, we just need to find a place."
Soon they were sitting at a little cafe on Boylston Street.
The waitress came and Katie got a chocolate milk and breakfast burrito. Tuukka ordered a black coffee and an omelette.
"Chocolate milk?" He inquired once the waitress left.
"Yeah, it's so good. Please tell me you've had it before."
"Can't say I have... it sounds really weird."
"You can try some of mine. What kind of psycho has never tried chocolate milk?"
"...me."
Katie laughed as the waitress brought their drinks. She handed the chocolate milk to Tuukka and he took a sip. Katie grinned because it gave him a milk mustache, but he didn't notice it.
"That tastes strange... but it's good." He paused at her trying viciously to hold her laughter. "What's so funny?"
"N-nothing!" She managed to get out. Tuukka handed back the chocolate milk and he still hadn't noticed the mustache he got from it.
Katie composed herself and they were talking normally soon.
"So, do you have any plans for tonight?" He asked.
"No, I was planning on watching the game with Cara. The playoff game. That you're in? Tonight?"
"Yeah, I figured. Well if you're not doing anything, I talked to Seguin and we managed to get some tickets if you and your friend wanted to go an--"
"YES!" Katie exclaimed, causing a few people to look up from their breakfasts and newspapers. "Yes! I'd love to!"
"Good!" He said, happy that she could go. Her face fell for a minute. "Oh no.." she mumbled.
"What is it?" Tuukka asked, getting a bit worried.
"I- I don't have your jersey... I have Bergeron's," she said, looking up at him sadly.
He chuckled a bit before saying, "Don't worry about it. Come to the locker room around 5:15 and I'll be able to slip you one. And Bergy? I'm gonna have to talk to him about that later."
"Oh yeah, it's signed and everything. Are you jealous of me?"
"I'm more jealous of him," Tuukka muttered.
Katie smiled before asking, "But how am I going to get there? Well I mean I know the head of security and he'd probably let me through but I don't know.."
"The tickets are for VIP's but they're harder to get now cause it's the playoffs. They're given to the players so we can give them to whoever. You and your friend should be able to get through if you show the tickets to the security outside."
Right as Tuukka finished the sentence, the waitress came over with their breakfasts. "Thank you," he said as they walked away. They ate their breakfasts then left the cafe around 9:15.
They walked up the steps to Katie's apartment. He handed her the tickets and she grinned before kissing him.
She broke off after a minute and simply said, "Thank you for everything, Tuukka. Especially last night."
He hugged her and said, "Of course. I had fun. You're a really bad singer though."
"Shut up," she smirked, turning away to open her door. She pecked him one last time before adding, "good luck tonight."
"I'll look for you."
"No! Focus on the game," she said. "You'll see me after," she added, winking.
Tuukka's face was even for a minute, then he grinned. "Okayyy.. Oh. OH. Okay, okay." He walked down the steps before turning around and saying, "don't forget to get my jersey, babe."
It was 4:30 and Katie shut the door to her apartment after Cara. She was wearing black skinny jeans and gold flats, and her hair and makeup were ready. Cara was wearing her Seguin jersey, jeans and sandals and her hair and makeup were done as well.
They hailed a cab and got to TD Garden. A bunch of fans and season ticket holders were already making their way inside as they stepped out of the cab and paid the driver. They walked past the ticket window and into TD Garden. They handed the VIP tickets to a worker who showed them to their seats, which were surprisingly up very close. They were in loge 22 near the Bruins bench.
"I'm going to text Jimmy and tell him we're going to the locker room."
Katie:
hey! got good seats for the game tonight. can u get me to the locker room? i know rask
Jimmy:
hey, nice! i know him too, good guy. i can get u there, where are your seats? ill meet you
Katie:
yeah he is. & loge 22
Jimmy showed up in a few minutes. Cara stayed at the seats and Katie and Jimmy walked to the locker room.
"So you know Rask? You gotta tell me how, I thought you didn't do hockey players." Jimmy and Katie knew each other like the back of their hands.
"Yeah, I really like him. We've been on a few dates," she said. She didn't really want to tell him about how he carried her home from a club.
"That's cool. He's a real good guy, I've been golfing with him a few times. A little cocky, but he's alright."
They arrived at the locker room. "Wait out here," Jimmy said. He didn't want her to go in there in case they weren't dressed, or to surprise them. They needed to focus. He saw Rask in the corner putting his shoulder pads on and poked him.
"Hey man. Katie's out there, said you wanted her."
"Yeah man. Thanks," he said, smiling. He grabbed his extra jersey and walked out of the locker room as Jimmy stayed to talk to Lucic.
He walked out of the door and Katie jumped on his right side, putting her arms around his shoulders.
"HEY!" She shouted.
"Katie! Shush!" Tuukka said, putting his hand over her lips. "They're trying to get in the zone in there."
"Oh! Sorry!"
"It's fine. I have your jersey.. well, my jersey."
She reached for it and Tuukka held it above his head. "What are you going to give me in return?"
Katie went on her tip toes and kissed Tuukka passionately. He couldn't help it; he put his arm down at her waist. She still smells like vanilla. As she kissed him, Katie plucked the jersey out of his hand. He stopped kissing her.
"Hey! That's not fair!"
"You need to go, Tuukk. You gotta focus," she said as she put his jersey on.
"Yeah, you're right." He said. He walked back into the locker room with his hand on her lower back. He walked up to Jimmy, who was talking to Lucic.
Lucic grinned as he saw Tuukka walking with the girl he was talking about.
"Hey, Jimmy. I'm ready to go when you are," Katie said politely.
"Hey, I'm Milan Lucic," Lucic said, extending his hand. "Tuukka's told me all about you."
She smiled warmly and shook his hand. "Hi, I'm Katie. All good things, I hope?"
"You're good. Kid loves ya," Lucic said, slapping Tuukka on the back.
"That's good," Katie said, not knowing exactly what to say.
"Okay, you good?" Jimmy said. "I gotta go, too."
"Yeah, I'm good," she said. Katie stood on her tip toes to whisper something in Tuukka's ear before leaving. Tuukka leaned down, smelling vanilla as she said, "Good luck."
She walked out of the locker room with Jimmy. Once she was gone, the whole locker room erupted around Tuukka. He heard things like "RASK! YOU HITTING THAT? NO SHIT!" "Seguin you were right." "Absolute smokeshow." "TUUKKA YOU FUCKIN DOG!" He started laughing and just shouted, "Alright, shut the fuck up everyone!"
They all slowly started to get back to getting ready for the game.
"She's awesome, dude!" Lucic said once everyone was back to their own business.
"I know," he said. "I really like her a lot."
"Dude you love her, it's in your eyes. Cute," he taunted.
"Shut the fuck up Looch, no I don't."
"The first phase is always denial, brotha," Lucic said as he pulled up his socks. "Everyone can see it except you."
Tuukka skated out onto the ice, leading the team behind him. It felt so good to be back in Boston. He skated to his goalpost and warmed himself up. He glanced over at the seats he'd gotten for Katie, and sure enough, she was there, looking at the team as they skated around.
God she's beautiful.
Soon enough the game started and at the end of the first period no team had scored. Katie and Cara had already scarfed down some cheese fries and a few beers.
The second period started and 9 minutes in, Bozak scored a goal on Tuukka. Shit, he thought. First Katie scores on me, now fucking Bozak? Shit.
Tuukka composed himself for the rest of the second period before skating off the ice. They were down by 1 and needed to step it up.
Third period and Chara had scored a goal to tie it up and possibly go to OT.
There were 2 minutes on the clock and suddenly MacArthur scored a goal.
Wait. What?
The two minutes weren't enough time and the Bruins just couldn't get it together. They lost 2-1 on their home ice. Tuukka skated off, disappointed in himself for letting the game slip in the last two minutes, but also in his team for not getting it together in time.
He was the last one to walk out of the locker room after showers and interviews. He'd completely forgotten that Katie was there, he was so absorbed in what happened in the game. He walked out and slammed into Katie, who was standing there.
"Oh, sor-- hey?"
"Hey Tuukk. You did well."
He didn't say anything, just pulled her into a giant hug. All she said was, "Cara left with Seguin."
He nodded and put his left arm around her shoulders and continued to walk with her to his car.
"Hey, sweets. I have practice at 10, so I figured we could get a small breakfast then I could drop you off at your apartment."
"That sounds good, I have a class at 10:30."
