Opposites Attract
Five Miles In
It was a Saturday and Katie had a shitload of work to do. She walked a few blocks to a Dunkin Donuts and got 2 large iced regulars and when she got back to her apartment it was 10:15. She had 7 separate 5-page essays to write, due Monday.
"Hey!" Cara said as Katie walked in with coffees for themselves.
"Hey, I got you a coffee," she said, setting them on the table.
"Thanks, I'm gonna need it. Barely got any sleep last night," she said, winking. "Seems like you're in the same boat, Katie."
"Shut up. Did you guys go back here or to Seguins?"
"Back here. It got pretty messy."
"Alright that's enough! Did you contain it to just your room?"
"Yeah, don't worry. SO, how was Tuukka!?" Cara asked, dying to hear Katie's response.
"He was gooood."
"Oh come on, Kate. You gotta give me more details than that!"
"Jesus. What kind of details?"
"Did it get kinky? Any handcuffs? Leather? Whips? I could totally see Tuukka as a freak in the bed. When I met him it looked like he just wanted to destroy you."
"Jesus Christ! NO! No handcuffs! No whips, no leather! What the fuck?"
"He looks like he'd be into that kinky shit, sorry!"
"Well he wasn't!"
"Alright, alright, whatever. What're you doing today?"
"Up to my neck in papers I gotta write. Seven. You?"
"Gotta write 3, figured I'd be done around dinner. Wanna grab something?"
"I don't think I'll be able to, I'll be in one of my zones again." Whenever Katie had a ton of work to do, she'd shut herself off from the rest of the world and type while she listened to the Lana del Rey station on Pandora. She didn't know why or how it worked, but she'd been doing it since November so she went along with it.
"Ah, Lana del Rey? Alright. I'll call up Renee and we'll grab something."
"Alright, can you bring me back chicken nuggets or something?"
"Yeah. You should get to work, then. I have to, too."
Cara grabbed her laptop and sat on the couch in the living room, sprawling out a few papers. Katie grabbed her laptop and her notes from class, walked to her bedroom and sat with her legs crossed on her bed.
*****
4 hours later, it was 2:15 and Katie had already finished one paper and gotten halfway through the second. This was the hardest paper to write for her hardest class. She got up, stretched and went to the bathroom. She thought for a second about texting Tuukka, but decided against it.
5 more hours later, it was 7:15 on a Saturday night and Katie had finished four of her seven papers.
At the same time in Toronto, Tuukka was out to dinner with the team. He'd been quiet most of the day after what some of his teammates had said at lunch. As they were finishing dinner, Coach Julien said to the team, "If any of you are going out tonight you need to be here at the hotel by midnight. You know the rules." He looked at Seguin for a minute, who turned away and stared at his plate of spaghetti.
"Seguin," Coach said.
"Yeah."
"That means you."
"I know. I know the rules."
"Good. Tuukka I don't want to see any shit from you either." Tuukka just nodded.
Coach Julien went back to his room with a few of the coaching staff, and left the players to finish.
A few minutes after Julien left, Marchand piped up, "anyone going out tonight?" A few of the guys nodded and Marchand looked over at Seguin and Tuukka. "Segs? Tuukk?"
Tuukka shook his head. "Nah. I'm staying in tonight."
Seguin shook his head too. "Coach made it pretty clear. I'm gonna stay in too."
They finished dinner then went back to the hotel. Marchand and a few of the guys went out and Tuukka and Tyler, who were rooming together, went back to the room.
"So what's the deal with you and Katie's friend?" Tuukka asked, jumping on the bed and grabbing the clicker.
"Idunno. She's good at fucking, that's for sure."
"Nice. What's she like?"
"I mean, she's pretty and everything, and she's smart-- but there's no way it's gonna last."
"Why not?"
"Idunno. I'm not ready for a girlfriend, dude."
"I thought I wasn't either. Give it a chance, man. She seems nice."
Seguin nodded and was quiet for a minute before he said, "So you're really serious about Katie?"
"I don't know dude. I really like her but I just met her like a week ago, no idea where it's gonna go."
"She's a smoke. If you don't catch her someone else will."
"Yeah, I know."
It was Sunday May 12th and game 6 was just about to begin. Tuukka checked his phone last minute to see if he had any texts-- but he really just wanted to see if he had anything from Katie, to motivate him, and he did.
Katie:
good luck tonight :) miss you, hope everythings ok
He replied:
thanks. miss you too, hopefully we don't have to go to game 7 so we can do something monday night
Katie smiled at her phone but chose not to reply. She didn't want to distract him before a hugely important game. She put on her workout clothes and decided to go for a run. Since it was around 7:30 it wasn't that hot or dark out. She put her headphones in and began her 10 mile loop.
When Katie was 5 miles and about 40 minutes in, she reached an area in the South End that was a bit questionable. She ran by a few alleys but thought nothing of it. Suddenly she was thrusted from behind and pulled into an alley by a tall man with a white hat on. He put his hand over her mouth as she struggled to get free of his grasp, squirming as she was pressed against the wall. He grabbed both her hands and held them above her head with one hand and reached the other into his pocket. He pulled out a small switchblade and slowly inserted it into her waist several times.
"Maybe that'll shut you up," he muttered, smiling with a few teeth missing from his mouth. A few tears began to fall from Katie's face and she screamed loudly with all of her strength at the sharp pain that kept getting worse in the left side of her stomach. He kneed her in the chest where the knife was and she fell to the ground clutching her stomach. The man ran down the alley just as Katie saw 3 college-aged kids running towards her. The last thing she remembered was hearing an exasperated voice yell, "Call 911!" to another person as she was lifted up from the ground, her shirt soaked with blood.
The game ended up 2-1 Leafs, meaning the Bruins had to go to game 7 in Boston. The game started around 7:30, and their flight back to Boston got in around 2 am.
When Tuukka was sitting on the bus on the way to the airport around 11 he texted Katie:
looks like we cant do something monday night :(
He put his phone down and a few minutes later Katie was calling him. He smiled, pressed "answer" and breathed, "Hey sweets" before he was interrupted by shouting and deep breathing.
"Tuukka! It's Cara! Katie-- she got hurt--"
"WHAT?" He shouted into the phone, causing a few guys to look over at him. "What happened?! Is she ok?!"
"I-- They called me as her emergency contact and told me to come to the hospital and I did and they gave me her phone and said she got stabbed in the South End and--"
"Where is she now?! Is she okay? Oh my god-"
"I don't know-- she's in the emergency room right now and they're not telling me anything, she's been in there for about 2 and a half hours, I've just been waiting--"
The bus was at the airport and everyone was looking at Tuukka who had his head in his hands.
"Oh my God, oh my god- Cara I have to go I'm about to board the plane.. I'll be there in a few hours..."
"She'll be here overnight. I think she'll be fine, Tuukka. Please try not to get worked up. I'll see you later, alright?"
"I-- yeah," he mumbled before getting on the plane and hanging up.
"Tuukka, what happened?" Marchand asked, worried. Everyone was looking at Tuukka.
"I-- I don't even-- Katie's in the emergency room... she got stabbed," he stuttered.
"Hey!" Cara said as Katie walked in with coffees for themselves.
