A Welcome Gift
**THE DRAFT**
“Ashley let’s go! We are going to be late for your meeting with the team and the draft!” Katie screams at me through my closed door to my bedroom. I was still stunned from my date with Patrick.
“Calm your tits, I’m coming!” I scream as I open the door and see Katie standing there looking stunning. “Wow you look drop dead gorgeous!” I scream at Katie. Katie looks down at her dress, then looks back at me.
“I’m almost embarrassed to be seen in public with you. I always look so bad and you always look so perfect!” Katie screams at me, which startles me a little bit.
Paige had left earlier that day with Luke to meet up with his family in New Jersey for the draft. Right before she left, she yells to me “hopefully he makes it to the Blackhawks,” then walks out the door.

Once we finally get out of the door and in to the car I instantly plug in my iPhone to the auxiliary port. We start driving to make our way to the united center. It was only about a 10 minute drive. Once the music starts playing Katie and I both start singing.
We pull into the players parking lot and instantly Katie jumps out of the car to get a glimpse of the guys after their practice, while I start wandering around the United Center. I realized I had walked in a circle twice, before I knew I was lost. I started to look for Katie and while I call my cousin. I knew his phone was off when it went right to voicemail, so I start to wander around again, when I run into Patrick.
“We have got to stop meeting like this in public.” He whispers to me as I stand up
“Haha yeah, Have you seen Adam? I have been walking around this place and now probably know it better than the back of my hand.” I laugh a little to try and hide my embarrassment.
“He isn’t here. Didn’t he tell you? Something came up with family that he can’t come. I can show you around though, teach you the swing of things.” As Patrick was telling me where Adam was I got a text.
ADAM: Sorry Ash, won’t be able to make it. Caught up in family stuff… You know how that goes, just go down to the locker room and am sure someone will tell you what to do.
“Fuck” I mumble to myself and start walking with Patrick toward the locker room.
We start to make a little small talk on our way down to the locker room. We first start to talk about Adam and what it’s like to be related to him. I don’t understand why people always ask me that, but I answer with the typical ‘it’s okay I guess.’ He seems to be happy with that response. We somehow got on the topic of Fourth of July.
“I’m not going back to Minnesota for the 4th of July.” I got kind of sad because I would always spend 4th of July with my family in Minnesota and watch fireworks on Aunt Leah and Uncle Alex’s roof.
“Well I’m sure here won’t be much different.” What he didn’t know is I was going to spend it alone, Paige and Katie were both going back to Minnesota and not coming back for a while.
“Highly doubtful.”
Once we finally got to the locker room I was stunned, everyone was so tall compared to me.
Everyone starts to look around and start whistling at me. I have never been the smartest pumpkin in the patch, so I didn’t understand why they were all whistling, I just keep walking with my head down, playing with the hem of my red polka-dot dress. I found Katie standing in the corner with her face facing it. When I try to ask someone they all thought it was funny, and didn’t say anything. I just let it go and keep walking behind Patrick.
Once we reach where I was going to be working they had laid out my uniform. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. When I turn around to ask Patrick a question he was gone. I decide to walk out and hope everyone would be changed or at least decent. When I walk out no one was there not even Katie. She came out from a corner to scare me, “C’mon Ashley lets go explore!” As we walk out we see all the players lined up with something behind their backs. Fuck, was my only thought.
“Welcome to the team Ashley!” they all scream, and I try to turn back into the locker room but got stopped by Katie. She pushes me forwards and I try to run but my shoe kept coming off. As I start walking through people started throwing confetti, and spraying silly string at me. Once I got to the last two people they decide it would be a great idea to pie me.
Katie was in on this and they made her stand in the corner as a distraction for me not to notice all the stuff in the player’s lockers. After they figured out how shy I am, they knew they didn’t have to worry about me looking around or finding out their welcoming plan.
After I was done getting pied I turn around to see Katie laughing with her head down trying to hide her face. When she looked up from playing with the hem of her pink lace dress, she could see my glare through the whipped cream. To say the least, I was pissed.
“Love you?” was all Katie could manage to get out before I was chasing her down the hall and into the girls bathroom.
“Really Katie?! What the fuck! Why the hell did you go along with this?” I scream at her as I start to run the water in the sink. I guess it is kind of funny, especially because I always get super pissed really fast. Once I was cleaned up, Katie and I left the bathroom to go watch the draft with all the guys.
It was the third round of the draft, Brody and Luke still haven’t been picked. I was starting to get really nervous that they might not even get drafted. I heard the words “And the Chicago Blackhawks will take Brody Johnson.” My heart was happy but sad that it wasn’t Luke, before I even had a chance to fully react Katie was screaming and all the guys were cheering. Katie was pulling me into a hug and I tried to be happy but couldn’t.
“What’s wrong Ash?” She asks looking concerned, then all heads turn to me.
“What if Luke doesn’t get picked? I mean it’s already the third round and he still hasn’t gotten picked.” The next thing I know, I hear someone shushing everyone.
“The Washington Capitals will take Luke Thomas.” This time my heart actually sank. I was happy for him but he would be far away from me, I didn’t like that thought. I start to feel tears poking out of the side of my eyes. Why was I crying? At least he is still playing in the NHL, and I get Brody. Everyone came over to hug me but I push everyone away and ran outside. I felt my phone start to vibrate and then the ringtone came.
My phone starts to play the song Keep Your Head Up by Andy Grammar, and right away I knew it was Luke. We ended up talking for about five minutes, he told me not to worry and I told him I was happy for him. Once we said goodbye I sigh of relief. I was actually going to miss Luke.
My phone starts to ring again and I was about to answer it when I hear a voice next to me.
“Well aren’t you miss popular” I turn to look and there was Patrick Kane, once again.
“I wouldn’t go that far” I try to tune him out and call Brody back but Pat took my phone.
“If you want this phone back, you have to promise me that you will come on another date with me.” When I try to reach my phone he was just pushing it higher up in the air.
“Damn being short definitely has some disadvantages.” I laugh out as I keep reaching for my phone, holding his arm down. Every time I come close to grabbing he was switching hands, and snickering.
“Well looks like I have to go on a date then.” I shyly look down trying to hide the blush creeping onto my face.
“I guess you do. Fourth of July?” He asks, but I know it’s not a question.
“Um yeah that’s next Saturday right?” I start to think of how I’m going to tell Katie that she doesn’t need to feel bad about me being alone on one of my favorite holidays.
“Yup pick you up at 7. Dress festive.” He winked. And with that, he gives me my phone back and walks away.
I guess I’m not going to be alone on 4th of July after all.

So I have been really busy lately. I went on vaction last week then I was going to update when I got back but I forgot my password and I tried resetting but for some reason it didn't work so I had to somehow figure it out.
Well I feel really bad about not updating but I hope you like this chapter and I will try and update again soon!
