The Game of Love

Movies and Conversations

“Move over.” I shoved Peyton lightly with my hand as I sat next to her on the couch with a book in the other.

She handed over the carton of cookie dough ice cream and grabbed the remote. You see, this was something we did every Saturday morning. We would sit on the couch and eat ice cream for breakfast while watching lame shows. Usually I would read. This was a tradition we started when we first moved in together and we stuck by it.

“So are we doing anything today? Or do I get to stay looking horrible for the rest of the day?” She asked changing the channel.

I glared at her. “You’re kidding right?”

“What?”

“You’re gorgeous 99% of the time!” I threw my hands in the air to emphasize my point.

She gasped, mouth open. “Am not! Plus, where's that other 1%?"

"Well, you know, sometimes you don't wake up all that great. And sometimes your hair does that thing where it looks like something's living in it," I made a giant ball of hair on top of my head to show her.

She laughed for a second before shoving me causing me to spill ice cream on my shirt. "You're mean," she pouted.

I scratched the smudge of vanilla on my shirt hoping it didn't fall anywhere else and rolled my eyes. “Yeah, okay.” She denied it as much as she could, but she was beautiful. She was tall and slender, had perfectly glowing skin, wavy hair and a pair of hazel eyes that knocked you out. Ever since we met senior year in high school, I was jealous of her. I made sure she knew it too.

“Brooke, you okay?” Peyton shook me a bit.

I shook my head slightly and smiled at her. “Yeah, sorry I was just thinking. I don’t know. Do you feel like doing something? I really don’t mind staying in today.”

She grinned. “Staying in it is. We can order take out and watch totally lame movies all day. It’ll be rad.”

I laughed opening my book and starting to read. Her phone vibrated as she opened it smiling. I gave her a look and she only smiled. I shrugged and got up to use the bathroom. I was halfway there before she spoke. My head turned back slightly but all I heard was some shuffling going on in the living room.

“Hey, you never told me what you thought of the guys.” She called out to me.

"Did you really have to ask me that while I'm in the bathroom?"

"Well, I figured it's as good a time as any. You know I have perfect timing."

I flushed the toilet and turned on the faucet washing my hands. “Honestly? I really liked them. Thank you for introducing them to me. I didn’t know you were good friends with them. They’re nice to hang out with,” I paused. “Even Max. I will admit, he does liven things up. Why do you ask?”

“No reason. I just wanted to know.”

I opened the door and walked back into the living room, seeing five very tall boys standing in our living room. I raised my eyebrows in slight surprise. “Peyton, our living room has been invaded by very large creatures.”

She laughed coming back in. “Marc was the one that texted me. Although how he got number I have no idea.”

He gave her a smile. “I have my ways."

“So you like me huh?” Max grinned at me.

I sighed. “I knew saying something about you would come back to bite me in the ass.”

His jaw dropped and had an offended look as the other guys laughed. “You know what? I don’t want to be friends with you anymore. Come on Peyton, you’re my new best friend.”

She shook her head. “I’m going to have to pass Max. I don’t enjoy being your last resort. And I don’t think I could handle your accent. It’s too much.”

“Fine!” He went over to sit on the couch to cross his arms and pouted. I walked back to the couch to sit on the edge and put the book back on my lap to start reading. “Hello! Do you not care how upset I am!” I stared at him with a blank face, blinking. After a while he muttered something in French and returned to stare at the carpet.

“So I’m assuming you guys wanted to do something today?” Peyton called from the kitchen.

“Yeah. Max dragged us here because he said he wanted to hangout with you guys.” Marc smiled at me.

I had only read a couple of pages of my book before I felt someone sit next to me. I looked up to see Kris looking at me smiling. “Hey, how are you?”

I let out a small laugh before smiling. “Hi. I’m good thank you. And yourself?”

He shrugged looking down at the floor. “I’m okay I guess.”

“You guess? No, that is simply not acceptable. We have to do something about that right away. Don’t worry I’ll make you feel excellent,” I smiled widely.

Kris laughed nodding his head. “Okay, if you say so.”

“I do.” I closed my book and got up. “What do you guys feel like doing?”

They all looked at each other with blank faces. “We were kind of hoping you would know.” Jordan spoke up reminding me that he and Sidney were even there. I don't know how I'd managed to miss his tall body in our relatively small living room.

I looked at Peyton. “What do we do? I mean we didn’t exactly have the best plans.”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. Is the mall too dangerous? It is a Saturday.”

I nodded. “Yeah, it’s probably packed. How about we grab something to eat and go to the movies? It’s pretty early so no one will be there.”

“Sounds good. Hey guys how do you feel about going to the movies?”

They all shrugged. “It has been a while since we’ve seen a movie.” Marc said looking up from his phone.

“Alright, let us get changed really fast. We’ll be right back.” I went into my room to change only to come out seconds later letting out a long sigh.

Jordan gave me a confused look. “What’s wrong?”

I looked at him shaking my head. “Peyton?”

She called from her room next to me. “Yeah?”

I stepped in front of her door. “Hand it over.”

She opened the door and stared at me. “Hand over what?”

I glared at her crossing my arms. “You know what. My brand new leather jacket that I bought two days ago.”

She gasped mimicking my stance. “Are you honestly thinking that I stole it?”

“No I’m not thinking, because I know that you did. You always steal my stuff.”

“That is so not-” I pushed her aside and walked in her room. “Brooke, no!” The door slammed. It was quiet for a moment before there was a loud smashing of things and clattering of furniture. She yelled. “No Brooke!” It went silent again before I finally opened the door and coming out with my jacket on.

She came out behind me. I adjusted the sweater underneath the jacket and looked up to see the guys staring at us completely weirded out by what just happened. Marc cleared his throat.

“You guys have a very strange relationship.”

I smiled. “Yeah, well Peyton has a habit of taking things that aren’t hers. That's as girly as either of us gets though.” I paused tilting my head to the side and raised my eyebrows. “I saw that.”

“How did you-”

“I can also tell when she’s making faces behind my back," I informed them. "It’s a talent I have.” I shrugged and walked back into my room. I let my hair down and decided I’d leave the waves in my hair. I put on some lip balm before grabbing a scarf and tying it around my neck. “Peyton, let’s go.”

“I’m almost ready.”

I shook my head looking myself over in the bathroom mirror. “No you’re not!” I called back. “You and I both know how long you take, especially on your hair. You’re pretty enough as it is. I don’t know why you put so much effort in.”

“Fine! I’ll be right out.”

I went into the bathroom and looked over myself in the mirror. I applied a decent amount of eyeliner before having the feeling of being watched. In the middle of dong the other eye, I looked behind at the guys. Marc, Max and Jordan had no expression and looked completely interested in what I was doing. Sidney was smiling slightly and Kris was smirking at me. I furrowed my brows before slightly kicking the door shut.

“Okay Brooke I’m ready.”

I walked out, grabbing my keys. “Do you want to drive?” She shrugged and took the keys handing me my phone “Let’s go guys.”

They all started shuffling out the door. When I closed the door I turned around to see Max smiling at me. “Can I help you?”

He shrugged. “I’m just wondering something."

“What?”

“Are you looking pretty for Sidney or….Kris?” He smirked.

I sighed. “I’m not even going to answer that.”
--------------------------------------------------------------
I laughed shaking my head, watching Max and Jordan trying to beat each other at some
game that was in the theater. After we saw a movie, they saw the games and ran over to play each other. Marc and Sidney went over to look at some large picture and Peyton was in the bathroom. I was sitting at a table looking at all of them, still unable to believe that I was actually hanging out with them.

“Hey.”

I looked up to see Kris standing awkwardly with his hands in his pockets. “Hey.”

He took the empty seat next to me. “Are you having fun?”

“I am actually, even though Max constantly kept talking throughout the whole movie.” I shrugged and smiled.

He laughed. “Yeah, well that’s Max for you.” I nodded as he smiled at me before looking down at the table.

Only then is when I really took a second to look at him. I had to admit, he was insanely adorable and his accent only helped. He seemed to get somewhat nervous around me, which didn't go unnoticed by Max. I couldn’t ignore the fact that he was constantly looking for something to talk about and in no way did I mind him trying because it was incredibly flattering and sweet since no one ever noticed me in that way. I smiled looking at his long hair falling on the side of his face. There was something mildly attractive about the beanie he always wore pushing all his dark hair away from his face, complimenting his eyes and nose. He looked concentrated, as if he was waiting for something. I began to smirk to myself before he looked up and had a confused look on his face.

I let out a nervous laugh. “Sorry, I was just thinking.” I looked up to see what the guys had been doing before my eyes fell on Sidney. He stared at me with a blank face. I furrowed my brows until Marc nudged him and seemed to whisper something to him. Sidney shook his head and looked back down. Kris’ voice interrupted my staring.

“So, uh-” He cleared his throat as I looked up at him. “How’s life?”

I shook my head smiling at his failure at attempting to say something better. “Well, I’m at the movies with a group of the Pittsburgh Penguins. And I’m sitting next to Kris Letang having a conversation, so I’d say life is pretty good right now.”

A smirk grew on his face as he ran a hand through his hair and put his beanie back on. “Thank you. It’s nice to be talking to you too.”

“Thank you, even though I don’t really see why. There’s not necessarily anything remotely interesting about me.” I shrugged let out a small laugh.

He looked at me for a moment before opening his mouth. “Actually-”

“Oh lord! This girl in the bathroom kept bugging me about how she loved my jeans and where I got them. I told her I couldn’t remember except that they were form some vintage shop and she looks at me like I have three heads. How could she not know what vintage means!” Peyton stood in front of Kris and me as I simply stared at her.

“Oh man Peyton. Of course that would happen to you.” I looked at Kris who had looked back down and let out a long sigh.

“Hey guys can we go now? I’m getting tired of losing to Jordan.” Max came over and sat on my lap.

Jordan soon came after him laughing. “You’re just mad because you cant play and you’re French.” He gasped opening his mouth to say something but soon closed it, frowning.

I tried to push him off me as I tried to catch my breath. “Max, I can’t breathe. You’re too heavy. I’m begging you, get off me.”

“I am not fat! How dare you call me fat.” He got up and stormed off to go over to Marc and Sidney.

I sighed, rolling my eyes. “Oh, the headaches that boy gives me.”

They eventually came back and Marc began talking. “Well, we’re going to go. We don’t want to but coach has to talk to us and we are kind of tired so we’re going to rest. But tomorrow we will spend the whole day with you guys.”

“That’s perfectly fine. Don’t worry about it. I hope we didn’t wear you guys out too much,” I paused. “Or bore you too much.”

He laughed. “No it’s fine. We had fun, really.” We all got up, walking outside the theater heading towards our cars. We said our goodbyes watched them get in the car.

Kris stopped in front of me not knowing what to do, before finally waving awkwardly. “Bye Brooke. I’ll see you around.”

I smiled in return. “Bye Kris.”

Once he got in Max stopped turning to look at me. “I don’t care what you say, I still think he has a thing for you. And he looked like he wanted to punch Peyton for interrupting your conversation.” He smirked turning to look at Peyton. “Uh, bye Peyton. See you later.”

She scoffed slightly. “You wish Talbot.”

He got in the car as we waved to the boys. “Take care.” I looked back at Peyton giving her a confused look. “What was that about?” I asked motioning to the car driving out of the parking lot.

She sighed putting her arm around my shoulder. “Come on let’s just go home. I feel tired.” She pulled me as we fell into step walking back towards the car.

And I couldn’t help but think about what Max had said all the way home.

I have so much to say.. and I know you like to read our comments so brace yourself :D.. First of all I'm not a huge fan of hockey fanfiction because I read a few others and they never make the character like the actual player, for example the things they say or the way they behave and sometimes they try so hard to make it seem as similar as possible that they exaggerate it. But after reading your story I couldn't stop reading. I hope you update soon. I do have an opinion on who she should end up with. I absolutely love Sidney as a player and a person, but I wish she would end up with Tanger, I mean everyone expects her to end up with Sid because he's so sweet and nice and almost perfect. I wish this story would be the one with a plot twist, something that no one expected. I hope she would either end up with Letang or maybe date Sid and then they break up and they're both heartbroken but he finds somebody else and she's happy that he's happy.. Oh God, I sound like I hate love stories but I don't. I'm just bored with predictable love stories. Anyways, I hope the fans from Team Sid are not upset :)
