The Assistant
The Chance Of A Life Time
The phone rang early in the morning as Laura turned in bed to answer it. “Hello?”She asked, voice still deep and sleepy. “Yes, hello. Is this Miss Kendrick speaking?” The man on the other end didn’t sound the least bit familiar to her. But he did sound in a hurry. Pushing her blanket aside, Laura turned and swung her legs out of bed, feet resting on the floor. Phone still pressed to her ear. “Yes, it’s me speaking,” she answered, taken aback by the man’s urgent tone.
“Oh, well in that case congratulations! I’m speaking on behalf of the Chicago Blackhawks organization. If you’ll recall you might’ve entered your name in a draw? The person whose name was drawn would get the opportunity to work with an equipment manager and help around during the team’s practice. Be an assistant if you will. And your name was drawn.” Laura was silent. That did ring a bell. In fact, it was only a couple of weeks ago that she’d entered. Even though her best friend had forced her in to it. But she’d had no thought in her mind about winning, so she’d entered just for the heck of it. And to get Mai to shut up about it of course. “Hello? Are you still there Miss?” The man’s voice broke her out of the shock. “O-oh, yes! I’m here! I just can’t believe what you told me, this is beyond amazing.” Laura grinned to herself. “Well, we enjoy giving the fans opportunities like these. It’s a way to give back to them for their unwavering devotion. So I can assume that it’s a yes? You’ll come?” The man had guessed right. “Yes sir, I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Laura replied with a laugh. “Excellent. I needed your final approval before I finalized any of the plans for the event. I’ll have my secretary call you back a bit later with all the information for your trip and arrival here. See you when you arrive in Chicago!” Laura said good-bye to the man and hung up. “Is this actually happening?” She asked out loud while pinching her arm to make sure. “Ouch! Okay, definitely real.”
Getting off of her bed, Laura quickly gathered a lazy day outfit from her closet, and made her way to the bathroom. After showering and cleaning up, Laura made her way back to her room and grabbed a brush. Getting her hair tangle free and straight enough to manage, she slightly parted her hair to the side and tied it up in a pony tail. Grabbing her phone from her nightstand, she plopped back onto her bed. Laura dialled the number she knew she could recite in her sleep, and waited for her best friend to pick up. Mai wasn’t an early riser but this was important news that could not wait. After about the third ring, she answered. “Hello...,” Mai’s tired voice droned on the other end. Laura laughed. “It’s me loser. I have amazing news!” Mai yawned, “OMG, you got a guy?” She asked, not trying the least bit to hide the sarcasm in her voice. “Girl please. No, that’s not it. And what are you trying to say anyway?” Laura shot back defensively. “Never mind. What’s so important that you woke me up at nine in the morning for?” Mai continued.
“You’re not going to believe me but –I GOT CHOSEN TO BE AN ASSISTANT TO THE EQUIPMENT MANAGER FOR THE BLACKHAWKS FOR A DAY!” She boasted. There was silence for a bit. Then Mai burst out, “First of all, OWWW! You just shattered my ear drum. Second, I HATE YOU!” Mai was most definitely awake now. “How did that even happen?! When are you going!? Can I come? I hate you!? I want to go to Chicagooooooo!” Laura could hear Mai shuffling around and getting out of bed. “If you’d give me a chance to breathe, I’ll let you know.” Laura replied rolling her eyes. “Well get on with it then will you?” Mai sassed. The girl was not born instilled with patience. “Okay okay. Remember that day when we were at Sport Check , and we were checking out the jerseys, but then we decided we only needed the hoodies, and then we were at the checkout and paying, and the cashier told us about that draw? And you forced me into entering, and then you entered too? Yeah well - I won!” Laura shrieked. “There goes my other ear, you idiot!” Mai whined. “You really aren’t made for mornings are you M?” Laura smiled feeling apologetic. “Clearly Lo Lo.” “Alright Mai, I’ll call you back later, we’ve got to hang out okay?”Mai laughed. “Yeah I had better get up and ready as well. Thanks for the wake up call, and congrats!” Laura could hear Mai smile on the other end. “Yeah, thanks, see you soon. Bye!” Laura hung up and sat on her bed in silence for a bit. “Thank-you so much for this,” she silently prayed, letting out a breath. She closed her eyes and let the news sink in. Getting up off her bed, Laura broke into a run, laughing. She ran all the way to the kitchen yelling, “LIFE IS GOOD BABAAAAAAAAY!”
Brand new story! This was actually inspired by a video I saw where a woman was actually given the chance to be an assistant to an equipment manager. But that whole scenario happened in a completely different way. I only drew inspiration from the event. So credit to the video for that. But anyway,I hope you liked. And remember to comment and vote if you liked!
