The Assistant

Blondie

"Ooooohhhh eeeeeemmmm geeeeeeee!" Sidney screeched punching Laura's arm. "Shh! People are sleeping!" Laura whisper yelled. She had just given Sidney a full explanation on how her first date with Patrick had been. "Girl I'm blushing, that's so fu- freaking cute!" Sidney corrected and continued to coo as Laura gave her a look. She couldn't stand it when people swore. "He literally held your hands and said that fluff! I just can't Laur, I just can't!" Laura could feel her cheeks beginning to redden as Sidney pressed on. "It's like watching a fairy tale in the making!" Laura groaned and pushed a pillow to her face. "Shut up!You're making me feel embarrassed!" And she was. "Sorry man but this is too cute!" Laura began to giggle, remembering how Patrick had held her hands. Pulling her face from the pillow she smiled wide. "It is, isn't it?." Sidney rolled her eyes and nodded. "Man, amazing things like this, they don't happen to losers like me." Laura thought aloud. Sidney gave her a questioning look that. But Laura kept silent as she turned to look out the big window to her left. There were many times she had dreamt about situations like tonight. She only hoped it would all continue as beautifully.
Early that morning Laura got a phone call from Clint. They were letting her come back and help out again if she wanted to. Beaming she had said yes and then immediately felt the all too familiar anxiety. She was going to see them all again. She was going to see Patrick again. Stumbling out of bed she had asked if she could bring Sidney along. Her cousin of course didn't have many regards to hockey. But Laura knew she had been ditching her more often than needed, and she thought Sidney could use a dose of excitement. Clint had agreed and Laura had shook Sidney awake with the news. "Throw me a party will ya?" Sidney responded sleepily. Laura sighed and gently shoved her once more. "Dude, this is sick! Why aren't you excited?" Sidney groaned and reluctantly rolled over to face Laura. "Because it's like 7 in the morning. I like to sleep a lot. You do that math." Laura shrugged with uncertainty but realized it was true. She was a definite early bird. Sidney clearly had never been. "Well it was my job to give you the invite. Whether you accept it or not is up to you." With that said, Laura moved away from Sidney and her grumbling and walked over to her suitcase. Sitting down on the carpeted floor of the hotel room, she searched through her belongings aimlessly. "Wow. Only three more days until we head back to Vancouver." She thought. "This good-bye is not going to be easy." Laura had just about giving up looking for nothing when she felt her hand clutch something small and beaded. Curious, she pulled it out from underneath her clothes and gasped. It was a bracelet. It wasn't anything too dainty but nonetheless it had value to her. It was made of a silver elastic cord, with a knot between each pearly bead and the next, and at the middle was a small, silver, plastic, high heel. Laura twirled it around in her fingers and smiled at the memory of the day she had made it alongside her cousin, Arya. They must've been in the ninth grade, bored, and apparently with crafting materials. But she also remembered she had let Arya keep it. "So then why do I have it?" She thought. Making a mental note to herself to check up on Arya, Laura slipped the bracelet onto her wrist and got up.
Sidney somehow was already showering as far as Laura could tell. So she took that time to send a text over to Arya, whose number had been long stored in her phone since she had first got one. Feeling peaceful, she stretched out onto her bed and grabbed her novel from the nightstand. But about a page and a half later, she realized she could no longer pay any attention to the story. "Arghhhh, what's wrong with meeeee." She whined to herself, putting the book aside. "Maybe I really do have this Kane fever." She thought. "Get a hold of yourself! This 'thing,' ends here in Chicago. You need to finish University, he has a professional career. This isn't going to happen either way." Soon when Laura was done destroying her hopes, she got up and decided to take a long walk around the hotel.
Returning from her thought filled walk, Laura found Sidney standing in front of the rooms full length mirror. And the room was a mess! Clothing was thrown all over the place, half covering the TV, all over the beds and floor. "Bro! I leave for 15 minutes and the place looks like an avalanche happened! What are you doing?!" Laura demanded, stepping over the heap that blocked the door. "Uh, hello? I looked up the rest of that team and I can for sure say they some of them are hot tamales!" Sidney answered, as if that sentence alone explained anything. "Point being?" Laura asked, picking up a colossal bundle of socks from the floor. "Point being I gotta look presentable. They already saw you once so that's okay, but not me. My first impression has got to be a good one." Laura shook her head but said nothing. Sidney would soon enough learn that the job she'd signed up for, involved more sweat than sequins. "Just dress for the cold." She advised before stepping to her side of the room. It was about 8:30 a.m. and Laura received the call from the receptionist that someone was waiting for them downstairs. Five minutes later Laura had dragged Sidney out of the room and into the elevator. "Stop fussing, okay. You look fine." Laura said, feeling just as giddy herself. Sidney stood silently until the elevator dinged and they stepped out into the lobby. "Whose here anyway?" She asked when she finally spoke again. "Probably the driver whose taking us there, though you never know." The two walked outside to see the red and black Camaro. "Yep." Laura thought as she continued walking. Meanwhile Sidney beside her had her first taste of what this mad experience really felt like.
The girls arrived at Johnny's Ice House and the complaints of how cold it was began to erupt from Sidney. "I told you to dress like it was winter." Laura chided. All over again like the two days before, Laura and Sidney went to work with Clint. Laura had to silently explain a lot of what everything was to Sidney, but she soon got the gist of it. Later while joking around and laughing with Clint and Sidney, Laura noticed a certain blue-eyed someone staring at them. Fully looking over she flashed Patrick a shy smile and waved a little. He smiled big and gave a small wave back. Turning back to her companions on the bench, Laura realized the laughter and talking had stopped. Clint and Sidney were both giving her an all too knowing look. "What?" She asked, a little self conscious. "Ooh nothing. We just seem to have noticed you have a soft spot for Blondie over there." Clint implied with a smile. Laura could feel her cheeks going red. "It was just a wave guys." She countered defensively. "Sure it was." Sidney added sarcastically. Laura bit the inside of her cheek to keep from smiling. In a matter of seconds all three of them had burst out in laughter. "Guys be quiet, don't draw attention!" Laura managed to say in between giggles. "Too late," Sidney answered, getting a hold of herself. Laura stopped laughing and gave her a questioning look. Her cousin raised an eyebrow with amusement and added, "Here he comes."
