What We Don't Know, Will Hurt Us

Chapter 4: The Truth

Mari's POV
Sunday came quicker than a speeding bullet. As soon as I woke up, my heart was pounding, already anxious about what will happen later today. I did my usual routine though, not wanting to cause suspicion. I hate to be the bearer of bad news.. In fact I hate to bear any sort of news. Frankly I don't know if what I'm going to tell him will be bad or good. Whatever, you have to do this Mari.

I get closer to where Jon and I are supposed to meet. Clutching the envelope in one hand, thoughts run through my head of what can happen after I tell him. Oh boy.

But as soon as I see him approaching, and with that smile, my hand immediately hides the letter inside my bag.

"Hey Mari! Did I keep you waiting?" He asks
"Not at all, did you rush? You should've taken your time, it's alright!" I reassured him
"Nope, was pretty excited to see you anyway. I know a nearby place. Good Coffee. Dead at these hours. My treat?"
"Sure" I smiled and followed him.

The rest of the walk consisted of him talking about what's going on in his life in the last 7 years. Honestly, I can't really hear what he's saying, clouded by the loud thumps of my heart out of nervousness. I'm pretty sure I'm about to have a cardiac arrest but, I have to get this over and done with. It's a promise to my sister.

We enter the small and shabby cafe, ordered and sat down. Sigh, here goes nothing.

"Are you ok? You're really quiet. Different from the 14 year old Mari back then. Or did me talking just wear you down." He chuckles
"No" I laugh "just need coffee, my boost" I smiled.
"So how bout you? I've been talking for like 20 minutes now about me. Now it's your turn." He asked.
"Well, I'm in my 3rd year of college, public relations."
"Wow, pretty cool Mari"
"I work part time for AA, as you saw me in O'Hare. Yes the teenage me is still here, I sometimes work as a freelance makeup artist." I continued
"Nice" he nodded in approval.
"So how's David?"
"He's also playing hockey. Funny you ask, you guys weren't really close right?"
"I know, it's like he doesn't like me. I constantly talk but did it put him off that much that every time I say hi or start a conversation, he just.. I don't know, retreats?"
"It's not that he doesn't like you, it's just that he's shy."
"He's not very shy when I see him with his friends when we're in school."
He laughs. "It's cause Davey had a crush on you." He continues to laugh. "Oh my gosh, when I used to go on dates with your sister, I told him to join knowing you'd be there. He'd just blush and look like a deer in headlights once he sees you."
"Wow, David is a cutie, something could've worked." I jokingly wink
"Will you break his heart as well?" He asks
Knowing fully what he means, I just slightly smile and chuckle at his question.
"How's Jas? I bet she's a nurse now. Or did she pursue photography? Knowing her, she's probably engaged or married even." He looks down
"Actually, Jon." I begin
I take a break and breath in. He leans in closer.
"Jas passed away."
