A Summer to Remember

10

Today we were finally able to take Nat home from the hospital but she still has symptoms from her concussion so the doctor said we still need to keep an eye on her, which is understandable. But it was going to be nice to have her home. Except she was going to live at her home and I was going to live at mine. I really wanted to stay over for a few days but of course she was being stubborn and only said that I could visit her, and not live with her. I finally gave in but had to make sure her house was okay (meaning no Tyler) before I left her alone to rest for awhile.

We got out of my SUV and made our way to the front door. She turned the key but it turns out that the door was already unlocked. She shot me a look, “Sorry, I may not have locked the door before we left a couple days ago. But I wanted to make sure you were okay!” She gave me a kiss before walking inside. She went and put her purse on the kitchen table. “Pat you wanna stay for dinner?” She called to the front room where I was standing. I shrugged, “Sure,” then she walked back in with 2 take out menus, “Chinese or Pizza?” I laughed, “Pizza’s good.” “Okay, so the usual,” Then I heard something upstairs. “What’s wrong Pat?” I put a finger to my lips urging her to be quiet and I pointed upstairs. I got to the middle step and then a man stepped out from the shadows, but it wasn’t just any man. That fucker finally returned. He kept walking down the steps, and I did the same but backwards to keep an eye on him.

Natalie was freaking out behind me so she grabbed my hand and stood at my back. I could feel her heart beat speed up; this man completely and totally scared her. “Natalie, where have you been?” She stayed quiet and I squeezed her hand for support. “Pat took me to the hospital; I had a severe concussion from a couple days ago.” He made his way down the rest of the stairs, “Listen Natalie, I’m sorry for what happened, I really am. I just don’t understand why you love this guy. He’s just going to leave you in the end.” Tyler had no idea what he was talking about. I love Natalie. I have for a long time; he’s judging me as if I was 19 again. Well guess what buddy, I’m not 19 anymore. I’m here for her and I’m not going anywhere. “Tyler, that’s a load of bullshit, and you especially know that.” I yelled.

“Don’t call bullshit Pat; I’m way better for her than you are.”

“Yeah right, you are wanted by the Buffalo police for domestic abuse. All I have to do is call them.” I brought out my cell phone and dialed the number for the detective on the case. Natalie was still behind me, shaking in silence of what was unfolding. “Wow Pat and I thought I was the good one. Now you’re turning me in to the police? She’s really changed you.” He folded his arms over his chest in confidence, “Yeah actually she has changed me Ty, for the better.” I squeezed Natalie’s hand and she squeezed back as I hit the call button on the phone. “Hello Detective Martins, yeah it’s Pat Kane, yep we found him.” He laughed, “Well do you seriously think that I’m just going to give in that easily? Fuck no. See ya bitch.” He started to run out the door and Natalie finally spoke, “What? Are you just going to let him go?” I laughed and told her to look outside.

There were police squads and Detective Martins out there with his jet black hair in regular clothes with his badge dangling around his neck. Her mouth dropped open, “But how?” I wrapped my arm around her, “I sent him a text, come on Nat who actually calls people these days.” She playfully hit my chest but then hugged me immediately after. “Thank you,” she whispered. “I told you that I would always be there for you.” I said back as Tyler got handcuffed. “I don’t know why I ever went back to him, he always seemed like he had a violent temper.” I rolled my eyes as we walked back inside.

As we sat there eating our pizza it was silent as the evening news played on the TV. She stared down at her plate, picking off the pepperoni slices and putting them to the side. The only reason she got pepperoni was because she knew that that was my favorite pizza topping. But the thing was she didn’t seem too happy. I mean if I was in her position I would be ecstatic that the asshole was at the police station for the time being. “I’ll take those.” I said reaching over and grabbing the red discs from her plate. “Pat we need to talk.” The smile faded from my face, “Oh no, not this again.” Her eyes went wide, “No, no, no. That’s not what this is about. It’s about the baby. Tyler’s baby,” I shoved have the slice in my mouth, “Yeah what about it?”

“Well, if we’re together even though I’m still married for the time being, what happens when he or she comes? Because I’m not getting an abort—,”

“I’ll raise it as my own,” I interrupted, and a smile appeared on the corners of her lips, “Yeah but what about your fans? What about the Blackhawks?” she quickly responded. “What about them? The P.A. of the Blackhawks has already saved my ass for the rest of the shit I’ve gotten myself into, they can help me with this too, and besides they will understand. But you and I will raise the baby together. We can raise it here if you want.” I looked down at the plate kind of disappointed in what I just said. I would want to be there for him or her, even though they aren’t even my child. I would still treat it as my child. “Pat, I know what you are trying to do, and I was thinking about that too, but it’s not going to happen, we’re both going to raise the baby wherever you are.” She leaned over and placed her hand on mine. I leaned back and gave her a delicate kiss on the lips.

She really is my best friend. And I want to spend the rest of my life with her. That night I went to bed with a smile on my face knowing that she was mine, and I was hers. And that was her baby that I was going to help her raise.
