A Summer to Remember

9

When she said Tyler shit was going to go down. Yes I was happy that she was thinking about choosing me over Tyler but I didn’t think he was going to take it that far. I can honestly say that I would have never guessed that Tyler, Tyler Smith from high school, would ever do something like that to a girl not to mention a girl that he loves so much.

Natalie lost consciousness and there was blood on the ground that led to a cut the size of a gumball on her forehead, and there was a mark on the door frame that her head was leaning against so if my guess is correct he hit her and her head hit against the door, drawing blood. Just thinking of those words made my head spin, I needed to get her to the hospital and fast. My heart was pounding, my adrenaline racing; Tyler was a dead man and a fucking coward for running away like that. I don’t exactly know where he is right now I’m going to find that little fucker and beat the shit out of him if it’s the last thing I do.

Once we got to Buffalo General Hospital I stopped at the ‘pick up/drop off’ area in front of the emergency room entrance and picked her up and carried her through the automatic doors. “Help! Someone I need a doctor! She’s unconscious!” I barely got through my cry for help before nurses and doctors ripped her from my arms and took her away on a stretcher through the white double doors of the emergency room.

They weren’t going to allow me to follow them but one of the nurses stayed behind to find out what happened so I tried to explain to the girl as best as I could. “And so I went in through the front door like she asked me to do and I walked though the kitchen and in the office I saw her leaning up against the wall in the corner of the room by the door.” She was writing things down on a piece of paper, taking notes of what I just said. She didn’t look up before saying, “Do you know who did this to her?” I then said confidently, “Tyler Smith did this to her, her husband.” She furrowed her eyebrows, “How do you know for sure?” “Because when I got into the room and asked her what happened she said his name before losing consciousness again.” She then stood up from her chair and said thank you and walked back into the emergency room and left me in the white lobby.

My phone went off and I checked the new message after that:

Jackie: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH NATALIE?????

Pat: I took her to the emergency room. She’s hurt really badly Jack

Jackie: Whyyy????

Pat: Tyler had something to do with it

Jackie: I knew it!! Well give us updates..She’s like my sister…

Pat: I know Jack, but I gotta go. The doctors here

I stood up and waited for the woman in the white coat to tell me the news. “She’s okay.” I could finally breath again, “Can I see her?” She nodded, “Yes, and just so you know she is going to be admitted to run a few more tests. She has a major concussion from the incident so don’t ask her too many questions yet. Just let her breath for a bit.” She said with a smile before leading me into her new hospital room. I cracked open the door, “Natalie?” I really only use her full name when it’s something serious. When I walked in she was sitting up in her bed wiping her eyes. They were red and puffy and she had make up running down her cheek. She had a black eye that had formed on the way to the hospital and she had a bandage on her forehead, and another one right under her eye. “Hi Pat,” she said pulling herself together with a weak smile. “Hey, how you feeling?” she shrugged her shoulders, “How am I supposed to feel after my husband beat me for asking for a divorce.” The tears started forming again and I ran over and gripped her body and pressed it against mine. “shh, it’s okay. This is all my fault this happened anyway.” I cooed. She looked up at me with an angry expression, “Are you kidding me? I’m the one that marries a guy that I know is completely and totally in love with me even though I know I’m in love with another guy.” I ran my fingers through her hair. “Natalie, calm down. It’s okay, and I’m not going to argue with you now. It’s not good for you.”

There I sat, holding her in my arms in silence. “Pat, thank you for saving me.” She finally wrapped her arms around my midsection. “You’re welcome Natalie. I told you I would do anything for you.” I placed my chin on the top of her head. “Now you need to get some rest. Then the doctor will come in 15 minutes later for 2 hours and then every hour. I’ll come back tomorrow. M’kay?” She nodded her head, “Uhuh, thanks Dr. Patrick.” I kissed her forehead (the part that wasn’t bandaged) and let her get some rest.

As I was walking out of the room I ran into both her mother and father who were in tears. “Is my baby okay?” She gripped me by the arms shaking me slightly. I wrapped my arms around her, “She’s fine. She has a concussion but she’s a tough girl, she’ll shake it off.” A final tear ran down her cheek, “Thank you Patrick.” I gave her a final hug and Natalie’s father a polite nod and handshake before leaving the hospital.

When I opened the front door everyone stopped and stared. I sat down at the kitchen table and held my head in my hands. “How is she?” Mom said motherly rubbing my back. “She’s okay, she’s got a severe concussion and a couple bruises and bumps but the doctor said she’ll live.” She put a hand on her mouth hiding the gasp that escaped her lips, “And you said Tyler did this to her?” I nodded, “I knew I didn’t like that boy! Does her mother know?” Once again I nodded, “Yeah I ran into them when I was leaving. “Oh thank God.”

“Yeah, my words exactly.”

The next day the family and I went back with flowers and a teddy bear (courtesy of myself) to the hospital to see her. She looked so much better. She was smiling and laughing and she enjoyed the company. It was nice to see her back to normal. We still haven’t gotten a hold of Tyler. Natalie has no idea where he is either. He won’t answer his phone. “Yeah, I tried everything and he won’t answer.” She shrugged his shoulders. She didn’t give a shit where he was. She was happy, he was out of her life and I was back in hers.

Overall, these past couple days have been kinda neutral. I mean I got to be with Natalie without Tyler interfering with our relationship until yesterday. But today he’s gone, and she’s all mine. Nothing could taste any sweeter right now.
