Common Ground

Chapter One

Tessa's POV

"Please rise for the singing of the national anthems!"

That's my cue.

"Oh, say can you see? By the dawn's early light." I was lucky that I remembered the words the anthem. I've already embarassed myself enough before, no need to make it worse by embarrassing myself in front of hundreds of thousands of people watching the hockey game tonight.

"Oh, Canada. Or home and native land! True patriot love. In all thy sons command. Car ton bras sait porter l'épée, Il sait porter la croix! Ton histoire est une épopée, des plus brillants exploits. God, keep our land, glorious and free! Oh, Canada we stand on guard, for thee! Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee!" I sang my heart out for the anthem I knew off by heart, in English and French. I walked off of the carpet that lay on the ice and back towards my seat, a seat right by the Avalanche's bench.

"Hey MacKinnon," I acknowledged the player from my home town of Cole Harbour.

"Nice version of O' Canada. Nice to be reminded of home for once."

"It's what I live for. So how are you liking the states?"

"Good, but it's not the same as Halifax."

"Tell me about it! Cole Harbour was my home for 17 years, now I live out in LA, all because of a record label that wanted to sign me. I had to give up Beavertails for it, and I'm stuck in a sweaty, slutty city for most of the year, with only the Pacific to cool me off! And with all the surfers, it makes it very difficult to swim!"

"I know how you feel. I went to Los Angeles for vacation before, and it was a hot day, and between everyone swimming and surfing, you could barely move without running into someone."

"Well you better go, next shift's comin' up. Talk to ya later, Nate."

"Later, Tessa."

I sat back down in my seat properly and watched the game closely. I promised my mom I would tell her if Nathan got any points, and it's always hard to hear the announcers, so I need to watch like my life depends on it. Just then, someone - I couldn't see who - tipped the puck into the net. I watched the jumbotron and listened to the announcers.

To: mom

Nathan got a goal!

From: mom

That's my favourite player!

To: mom

Isn't that Crosby?

From: mom

Anyone from Cole Harbour or the HRM is my favourite player.

I laughed at my mom and her seriousness. She was very serious about hockey players.

From: mom

oh, um, by the way, in two days, I need you home.

To: mom

No problem. I can have a vacation then anyways and was planning on coming up. As long as there is no talk about hockey. I may love it, but I've been to a game almost every night this month. It gets annoying talking about penalties and goals every day.

She promised me there would be as little reminders as possible. But when she told me the news, and who it involved, she broke her promise right in two.
