The Hockey Life

You're a Natural

PART ELEVEN: YOU'RE A NATURAL
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. My alarm clock had never sounded so annoying. When I woke up the day after Christmas, I was more tired than usual. I blamed that on the late night texting. I stayed in bed a little longer before getting up and getting ready since I was desperate for sleep.
Everyone else was up when I got ready to leave so they could say goodbye to me. I packed my stuff into my car and it was time to go back to the UC.
When I arrived there with the rest of the interns, I was sad to find out that the Hawks were traveling for a game. I had wanted to see Patrick since we had talked so much on Christmas, but I guessed that would have to wait.
“How was your Christmas?” Dylan managed to ask me before Brad came in.
“Pretty good, how was yours?” I asked.
“Great, it was a lot of fun actually. Did you get any amazing gifts?” he wondered.
“I got a new hockey stick,” I told him. “A Patrick Kane Bauer one, from my dad.”
“Awesome! I didn’t get any hockey gear, but I am planning to buy myself new skates with the money I got yesterday. Mine aren’t in the best shape right now,” Dylan explained. That was when Brad arrived and asked us about our holiday. We answered briefly and he did his normal explanation of the plans for the day.
“Today you will be out on the ice. You’ll be working on maintaining good ice conditions, which means meeting the Ice Girls and essentially becoming one for the day. That includes you guys,” he said, giving all the male interns a look. “On top of that, you’ll also be learning how to repair the glass,” he added.
“I have a question. Do we all have to wear the Ice Girl uniforms while we work on the ice?” one intern asked with a smirk, causing the other guys to laugh.
“No, I don’t think so Kevin. That would be highly distracting and unnecessary,” Brad answered.
We all put on skates and went out on the ice where we were greeted by the Ice Girls. I think many people judged them by their looks and outfits, but they seemed to be really nice girls, honestly.
“Maybe you should try out to be an ice girl, you’re a natural,” one of them said to me. She was a shorter haired brunette named Tiffany.
“I think I’d rather stick to playing hockey,” I answered.
“Oh, you’re a hockey player? I guess that’s why you’re such a natural skater,” she commented.
“Yeah, I’ve been playing since I was probably four. You could say that I feel pretty comfortable out here.” I glanced over at Dylan to see how he was doing. He seemed to be having fun with the blonde that was mentoring him.
“Is that your new girlfriend?” I laughed once the girls left.
“Absolutely not!” he said, blushing a little.
Next we learned to repair the glass, which wasn’t nearly as enjoyable for the guys as working with the Ice girls was. Once we were done, Brad did some more explaining.
“Tomorrow you will be learning to do a few more jobs that are done during games because you all will be working at the next game,” he said.
“So, the same thing Lena and I did?” Dylan wondered.
“No, not the same thing. You two got to work down on the bench where all the action was happening. At this game, you’ll still be in the action, but not as close to the ice. You’ll be with the other fans, selling tickets, concessions, merchandise, etc. as well as one other job that you’ll learn more about tomorrow,” he said. “Alright, well, you all are free to go. Nice job today.”
When I got home from the UC, I was greeted by Jonathan Toews - in cardboard cutout form, of course.
“Really Tess? Right in front of the door?” I complained, moving fake Tazer out of the way.
“Why not? I mean, who wouldn’t want to be greeted by a hottie like him?” she asked. I thought that was the only surprise, but when I got to my room I saw the Patrick Kane Fatheads on my walls around my bed.
“Tess!” I yelled. “Why’d you put them up? They are mine, after all. I should get a say on where they go.”
“Well, I placed them by your bed so you could dream about him at night and wake up to him in the morning,” she answered.
“I don’t need them by my bed, especially not for any of those ridiculous reasons, but thanks for your consideration,” I mumbled.
The rest of the day consisted of hockey practice followed by relaxation. By the time I went to bed, I was finally able to move the Fatheads to another wall without getting caught and yelled at by Tess. As it turned out, it was easy for me to dream about Kaner whether he was close to my bed or not.

Notes

It's a short, not-so eventful chapter, I know. I've already started working on the next chapter which will be more interesting, I promise! I'll try to update tomorrow or the day after. Just bear with me!
