PART SEVENTEEN: RELATIONSHIP MATERIAL
It didn’t take long for Tess to find me and wish me a Happy New Year. When Patrick noticed her, he dispersed into the blob of his teammates on the opposite side of the apartment. Tess could tell that something had just gone down by the expression on my face.
“Did you guys just…?”
“Yes!”
“Finally! Congrats, girl!” Tess exclaimed.
“Finally? Tess, we’ve only known each other for two weeks!” I reminded her.
“Yeah, but he’s super into you. He has been for…I don’t know…about two weeks. Jonathan told me,” she explained.
“Really?” I asked, a little surprised.
“Yeah, apparently he’s pretty serious about you too. Like, he wants to get a relationship out of this whole thing you guys have got going.” Wow, I wasn’t expecting that.
“Why didn’t you tell me that before?” I wondered.
“I just found out a few minutes ago. I didn’t have time to tell you!”
“Oh. Well, what about you and Jonathan? I saw you guys together during the countdown.”
“Yeah, he kissed me.” Tess said it so nonchalantly, as if it was nothing.
“For real?” I asked.
“Yes, for real! THE Jonathan Toews kissed me!” Her inner fan girl finally came out. “But, I can’t get too excited. I doubt that he wants a relationship,” she added, sounding a little disappointed.
“Don’t say that, you don’t know if that’s true or not! Maybe I can get some information out of Kaner for you,” I told her.
“You’re right. Good idea. But for right now, let’s not worry about it. It’s a new year, let’s party!”
We did just that. I made my rounds, getting some time in with everyone until it was close to 1:30 am. By then, Tess and I decided it was time to leave. Even though it was technically a holiday, we had afternoon classes later. We had to get at least a little sleep before it was time to get back into schoolwork.
“Well, I’m leaving. I have a class later,” I told Patrick. He was the last person I had to say goodbye to.
“Ouch, that’s rough.”
“I know. I’m going to attempt to get some sleep. Well, I’ll see you later,” I said, hugging him.
“Hey, before you go…would you…” was he nervous? He had trouble speaking for a moment. “Would you like to go on a date with me sometime?”
“I’d love to,” I confessed. Tess was right. He really did seem to be looking for an eventual relationship.
“Great! Well, you better get some sleep. We’ll figure out a day tonight, since we both have schedules to plan around,” he decided.
“Okay, bye.”
When Tess and I got home, I took off my makeup, changed, and went to bed. I was really looking forward to sleeping, but it took me a few hours to actually fall asleep. All I could do was think about the kiss, the potential date, and the relationship that Patrick and I could possibly have.

Later, my class went by so slowly. I had a headache throughout the whole thing and no medicine with me. When it was over I went straight home, took an Aspirin, and plopped down on the couch to snuggle a blanket and watch Netflix. It was going to be a lazy day for the remainder of the time that I was awake.
Tess’ class had been a little later than mine, so she got home shortly after me. She joined me on the couch with her own blanket and we watched New Girl reruns. A little later, I got a text from Patrick, wanting to plan our date.
>Hey J

>How was your class?

>That’s not good. Does your head still hurt?

>Oh, good! Well, are you up for planning a date, then?

>Ok, fine! Be that way!
>Jk. I know it’s really soon, but are you free tomorrow night?

>Ok. Sorry that it’s so soon, but after tomorrow I have a ton of away games. It would be a while before I got back home again, and I didn’t want to wait too long

>Ok. Well, I want the location to be a surprise, so I can’t give you too many details, but can I pick you up at 6?

>Ok, just send me your address at some point so I know where I’m going

>What?

>Yeah, right! Do I seem like a stalker to you?

>Oh god

>Good to know!
We talked for a while longer and Tess asked for play by plays of our conversation. She was really excited for me when she found out I officially had a date. I tried to pretend that it wasn’t a big deal, but inside I was freaking out. I hadn’t been on a date in forever, it seemed. I was looking forward to it, but at the same time, I was really nervous. I had to look and act perfectly, being that it was my first date with my favorite professional hockey player.
*******************************************************************
The next day, I had two classes, but they weren’t all that bad. When I got home, I asked Patrick how dressed up I should be. I decided to go with skinny jeans, a halfway dressy shirt, heels, and pretty jewelry.
“You look good, Lean!” Tess said when I exited my room fully dressed. All that was left to do was my hair and makeup. I did a smoky eye after setting my face and then I was torn on my hair.
“Keep it the way it is now. I like it natural,” Tess suggested. I took her advice, because it did look pretty decent, the way it had dried into waves. I was finally ready, but I had some time to kill before Patrick would get there. The seconds took their time ticking by. By the time I heard a knock on the door of our apartment, I had grown super impatient.
“Your husband…I mean, date, is here!” Tess yelled.
“Shut up!“ I scolded her. I feared that her voice could be heard in the hall, but I didn’t have time to worry about it all that much. I checked myself out in the mirror once more before heading to the door.
“Seriously though, get on that,” she told me, and she wasn’t talking about answering the door.
“Two weeks, Tess, and it’s the first date. What kind of girl do you take me for, after knowing me for years?” I wondered. I didn’t give her a chance to answer me, though, because I answered the door and Patrick Kane stood in the doorway in a nice, white shirt and dark wash jeans, looking completely adorable.
“Hey,” I greeted him.
“Hi. Wow. You look great. And you’re a lot taller than usual,” he commented, noticing my towering stilettos. I didn’t wear them very often, but I loved them.
“Thanks! You look good too,” I answered.
“Are you ready to go, then?”
“As ready as I’ll ever be, since I don’t know where we’re going.”
“Alright, let’s go then.”
“You kids have fun! Behave!” Tess warned us when we headed out the door, as if she was our mother and we were ten years old. I ignored her comment, but Patrick made sure to promise he would behave before the door closed.
