Rose Petals

PART NINETY-ONE: ROSE PETALS

I had always loved Valentine’s Day, ever since I was little. It seemed like more and more people started to hate it as I grew up - single people hated being reminded that they were single and some couples didn’t want to have to deal with yet another holiday. I always thought it was a cute day, though, and even though I wasn’t a morning person, I was in a good mood when I woke up on February 14th.
“Morning beautiful,” Patrick smiled when I opened my eyes.
“Morning handsome,” I replied, rubbing my eyes. “What time is it?”
“Ten forty-five. Why? Do you want to sleep in more?”
“Yes, but I have to go to the bathroom,” I complained, annoyed at the fact that I had to leave the comfort of our bed. I stayed put for a couple minutes, not wanting to get up.
“Are you actually going to go, or what?” Patrick wondered as I yawned.
“I guess so,” I decided as I finally got out of bed and padded into the bathroom. When I turned on the light, I was extremely surprised to see the mirror almost completely covered with pink and red sticky notes, except for the top, which had the words, “Things I Love About You,” scrawled across the glass.
“Patrick Timothy Kane, did you do this?” I hollered, a smile immediately forming on my face as I read some of the sticky notes. Your gorgeous smile. Your adorable laugh. Your beautiful eyes. How you wish me luck before every game. The way you kiss me. Your flawless body. Your perfect hair. The fact that you said yes. Those were just a few of the many things he had come up with.
“What, this?” he questioned me as he walked into the bathroom. I nodded. “Of course I did. Who else would have done it?”
“Thank you so much, Pat. This is so sweet,” I said, wrapping my arms around his shirtless torso before I could finish reading all the nice things he had written.
“You deserve it. You’re amazing,” he told me, squeezing me tightly. He let me go a few seconds later and he went back to bed so I could actually do my business. Once I felt better, I finished reading the notes on the mirror and returned to our room.
“My cute butt? My magnificent breasts? Really?” I inquired as I climbed back into bed with him.
“Hey, I kept it PG-13,” he laughed.
“I guess that’s true,” I agreed.
“Do you still want to sleep in? Because, I mean, now that you mentioned those things…”
“I’m tired, Patrick.” He frowned a little at this, but he let it go. I closed my eyes for a minute or two and when I took a peek, he had closed his too. My trick seemed to work, so I pressed my lips against his and felt him smile into the kiss.
“Liar,” he accused me, pinning me down.
“Who, me?”
“Yes, you brat!” I playfully argued with him about that one until we stopped being so lazy and decided to get out of bed. We both agreed that breakfast food sounded good even though it was closer to lunch time, so I started cooking after we showered. I made not-so heart shaped chocolate chip pancakes (I tried), bacon, hash browns, and eggs. Patrick and I rarely had real breakfasts like this one - it was usually just a muffin or granola bar or smoothie, depending on what we could grab out of the kitchen or a drive-thru the quickest. We savored every bite because of that.
After lunch, we watched Valentine’s Day (for obvious reasons), followed by The Proposal and Friends With Benefits, because why not have a romantic comedy marathon? We had plans to go out to dinner, so we made time to exchange gifts before we got ready.
“You open yours first. The more romantic part of the gift was on the bathroom mirror this morning, but I know you’ll like this,” he prompted me. I opened the card first, which had a Victoria’s Secret gift card inside. He knew me too well. Inside the bag was body wash, lotion, and perfume from Victoria’s Secret, all in my favorite scent.
“This is perfect! Thank you so much,” I kissed him. All it took was anything from that store to make me happy. “Now it’s your turn.”
For Patrick, I had filled an empty chocolate box with cupcake liners and then filled those with all of Patrick’s different favorite types of candy, rather than just getting him a typical box of chocolates with things he didn’t like. In addition, he had another box to unwrap, which contained Valentine’s Day themed boxer briefs for him and new red lingerie from, what do you know, Victoria’s Secret.
“I hope you don’t expect me to wear this,” he said as he held up the lingerie. “I’m pretty sure I’m only going to be able to fit into these,” he added, picking up the underwear for himself.
“Don’t worry. The boxer-briefs are for you to wear tonight, and the other things are for me to wear tonight,” I explained, and his eyes widened.
“I have to wait until later to see you in this?”
“We have dinner reservations at a nice place, Pat. We need to get ready,” I reminded him.
“We can just cancel and get McDonalds later,” Patrick joked as he kissed me.
“Just go get changed,” I commanded, pushing him away and rolling my eyes at him.
I curled my hair and put on a red dress, tights, and heels. Patrick changed into a red button up shirt and black pants. Once we were ready, we headed out to the restaurant. It was one where reservations were necessary, and it wasn’t exactly cheap. I had tried to convince Patrick to take it easy for this holiday after having our birthdays, Christmas, and our wedding so closely together. He didn’t listen, though. He said that since this was the last holiday for a while, we might as well do something nice for it too. Meanwhile, Tess had told me that she and Jonathan were keeping it low key. She didn’t really want to do much except for get some chocolates and spend time with him, which was understandable. If Patrick hadn’t insisted on taking me out, I would have been fine with doing the same thing. Even so, the food was incredible and I really loved any chance to get all dressed up and go somewhere - it was a nice change.
“So, about that new corset you got…” Patrick began when we got home from dinner. We took off our coats and he led me into our room, where there were rose petals spread out everywhere.
“When did you do this?” I couldn’t believe he had managed to surprise me with something cute and romantic AGAIN. If we weren’t already married, I would have thought he was leading up to a proposal.
“When you were waiting for me in the kitchen before dinner and I said I had to go to the bathroom before we left,” he clarified.
“Wow. Either you’re just that good or I’m really passive and gullible,” I decided. “But I really do like this, Pat. I’ll go change.” He took off his tie and I was able to catch him before slipping into the bathroom. “Don’t take everything off, okay? That’s my job.” I laughed to myself when he gave me a look before I closed the bathroom door.
I came out in the lace up corset and matching underwear and he was sitting on the bed, waiting for me.
“So, what do you want to do?” I asked him, messing with his shirt. He suddenly pulled me down onto the bed and pinned me down by my wrists.
“This,” he responded, his lips colliding harshly with mine. I was so surprised that I was breathless by the time he pulled back.
“Damn,” I breathed.
“Sorry, that was kind of ridiculous,” Patrick apologized.
“Don’t apologize. I like when you take control like that,” I realized. He seemed relieved.
“Well, in that case…”

***********************************************

A little later, when the two of us were relaxing under a blanket, my phone started to blow up. Unsurprisingly, the messages were from Tess. They included no words, just pictures. The first one was inside the United Center. Rose petals must have been a popular theme, because they were scattered across the UC ice, spelling out the words “Will You Marry Me?” The next picture was of an engagement ring on Tess’ finger. I immediately called her.
“HE PROPOSED?!” I yelled into the phone. Patrick was just grinning and laughing at me. Of course he knew it was happening. Him and Johnny told each other everything.
“Yes! I freaking thought we weren’t doing anything special! We were just going to go out for ice cream and he said he needed to stop at the UC first. So of course, he dragged me in and it was all dark but then the lights turned on and he kind of just acted like he didn’t see it or anything while I was standing there freaking out. Then he got all sentimental and got down on one knee and everything and the ring is just gorgeous and the whole thing was perfect, Lena. I know Patrick helped him out because there were photographers there to capture everything and I just can’t even believe this happened!” Tess was rambling and almost couldn’t find the words she was looking for, and I could tell how happy and excited and shocked she was. I was about as amazed as her. I wasn’t exactly expecting Jonathan to propose, but I was so happy for the two of them. I couldn’t wait for them to get married and I couldn’t wait to attend the wedding, because they truly belonged together like Patrick and I did. So, after congratulating her and telling Jonathan that he did an amazing job, we finally got off the phone and I giggled at the goofy smile that was still on my husband’s face.
“You guys are cute,” I told him. He seemed confused at first, but then I elaborated. “You and Jonathan. Helping each other out with proposals, sharing the whole rose petal idea. I think you two should get married.”
“I don’t think that would work out,” Patrick decided.
“Why not?”
“He wouldn’t dress up in lingerie for me like you do,” he joked. Well, I guess he had a point.
