Monstrous

Struggle

I eventually ended up falling asleep again, then taking a shower, while Danny and Z went searching for lunch and Lis. The shower was refreshing and probably the best part about this vacation so far. I was nervous about what Zac had planned for us. I had never had people plan something this extravagant for my birthday. Unless you count my sixth birthday surprise party/tea party. And I don't. My mom kinda ruined that one for me. That shower helped bring me back to earth. When I stepped out of the ridiculously large bathroom, Lis, Z and Danny were waiting for me.

Overcome with a sudden bout of shyness, I hugged my friend, and sat down to the slice of pizza Zac had set down for me.

"We are in one of the food destinations of the world, and you bring back Pizza?"

I giggled, and Lis joined in. It's so easy to be around her and Danny.

"Well, maybe if you two weren't such picky eaters!"

I glared at Danny, and he blushed a violent red as soon as Lis joined me. I smiled at my friend, and winked at her.

"The two big hockey players are scared of us. How cute!"

Zac huffed and stuffed the rest of his slice in his mouth as Lis laughed at me. Danny sat next to her, and Zac scooted closer to me. All eyes were on me again, and I was wishing I felt more calm. Z put his hand on my arm and gave it a light squeeze. He is so good at picking up on my moods, it is almost scary. Allison noticed too, so she started to lay out the plans for my time in Vegas.

"I know your actually birthday isn't until tomorrow, but I thought you'd want to spent that with Zac, so I got the four of us tickets to see BeLIEve and Danny made reservations for your birthday dinner. But that part is a surprise."

I was grateful to my friend. I knew she hated the one Cirque show I wanted to see, but she was willing to sit through it for me. And then a surprise dinner, and the whole Day with just Zac. Jesus this was going to be an amazing birthday.

"The show starts in a few hours, so we should probably start to get ready."

Lis motioned for me to join her in the bathroom, and I began to grab my flat iron out of my case, and setting out the makeup I needed. I have never been big on make up. Eyeliner, mascara, and chap-stick, lip gloss if we are going somewhere, so tonight was going to be easy. As the two of us set about being as girly as we ever were, which isn't much, we caught up on each others lives, and chatted about the whispers of a lockout. Danny had mentioned playing over seas. Z could go to the Phantoms in New York. Neither of us wanted that. It would put even more strain on relationships that were not easy under normal circumstances. We loved them, but neither of us were willing to give up our live if Bettman decided to be an asshole and lock our men out.

"If he does, I'll come to New York with the mob and pitchforks." Lis quipped, while I straightened my hair.

"I got the pitchforks. After all, am the Devils fan." I gigged at my reflection, and visibly relaxed. My mood was improving vastly.

By the time we were ready for the show, the boys were sitting in the living room, with Z's xbox hooked up, his iPod playing Bullet for my Valentine, and NHL 12 on the screen. I was stunned to see Zac playing as the Devils. I slid next to him on the couch and put my head on his shoulder.

"Good team choice, handsome."

I heard Danny and Lis snort back laughter. Zac just paused the game and wrapped his arms around me. He was warm, and comforting, and still smelled like hockey player, even though he hadn't played in weeks. His arms were becoming like home. I nestled closer to him, and smiled. This was how I wanted to spend my birthday. Wrapped up with the man I loved.

Our comfy moment was put the back burner when we realized we were going to be late if we didn't get out of there and to the theater. Lis and I grabbed out bags, and the boys met us in the lobby. My nerves returned, but only for a split second, as I realized that these people with ones that cared for me. I was safe and loved. And this birthday was going to rock.
---
The cab ride was eventful, with Lis saying she should have just driven us, and Zac quietly slipping me a tiny box wrapped in pink paper, and an even tinier envelope. He leaned in and whispered in my ear. "Open the card first, Pretty." My knees shook a bit. He was playing with me, and I knew it. I took the card out of the envelope, and there were just three things written in it. A number 1, a Z, and the number thirty-six. I was beyond confused, and looked at him like he was just as crazy as the Briere boys for getting me something for my birthday.

He motioned for me to open the box, and inside was a silver skeleton key, with a jewelry loop at the top. He plucked it from the box, and had my other necklace off me in a split second, replacing it with the new one before I could protest.

He looked me up and down greedily. Like he could devour me right then and there, and damn who would notice. I blushed and reached for the new charm at the hollow of my neck.

"Now, I am with you all the time, and not him."

I hated the tone of his voice. It was dark, and jealous and spiteful. Not the Zac and I knew and loved. He was never jealous or possessive. That was me. He never complained about my necklace. He knew the history. He knew what it meant to me. He didn't forbid me communication with my former fiance, so I never knew it bothered him this much. My eyes began to water, and I turned to face the window. I didn't want this to ruin the night, or the trip, so I tried my best to compose myself. In an effort to do just that, I reached for my phone and texted him a thank you. I knew he would smile. In the beginning of our relationship I used to text him a 36 for luck, so I did just that, but I added that little less than 3 symbol that have become so popular. By the time I was done, we were at The Luxor, and I was climbing from the car and into Zac's arms.

Notes

short, and only took me like an hour to write. Next up we have a guest written chapter about Allison and Aly's time in Vegas, along with the birthday dinner, where I am sure the impending possibility of a lockout will be a popular topic.
