Confessions from a Ranger's Roommate

Teodora and Alex vs Stamkos and Downie

"Who in the hell is that dark haired guy you were with? I know damn well he doesn't go to Columbia!" Lina hissed once Teodora yanked her outside. No need to wake up Joey after all.
She scoffed. "Well you damn well have been out of the country. Not my fault I met new friends. And you're all by yourself when the family drills you about your life. No one's helping you one fucking bit."
Lina rolled her eyes. "Quit being a snot cousin. I'm gone and this is the welcome I get from you?"
"Your fault," Teodora retorted promptly. "Maybe you should up and leave after the holidays are over."
"I am actually, so you don't have to worry," Lina spat back.

Teodora blinked in surprise and admittedly had to hide a smile of glee. Deep down she did still love her cousin, despite her stupidity but rooming with Michael was actually really fun and she would be bummed if Lina came back.
"Girls!" Dad barked from behind. Teodora swore and pressed her hand over her heart. "Sorry," he apologized and dropped a kiss to the top of her head. "I know the two of you have barely slept between your hospital shifts Lina and your school Teodora but let's get along."
Lina nodded too. "Yeah, sorry Uncle."
Nothing else could be said because Teodora bolted past Lina to squeal over her Mom's baby swelling. "Hi Mom!" She squeaked and then stooped to coo over her belly.

"SUP!" Alex cried from inside and joined Teodora in admiring her baby bump. "Man! So how far along are you Mz Ansary? Can we find out the gender yet? Do you find out in the fourth month? Do you think its a boy or girl? I heard you get sicker with girls. Does Joey want a little sister or brother?"
Dad laughed. "Alex! Remember to breathe!" He teased.
"We've known this boy forever and when has he ever stopped chattering?" Mom giggled and hugged Alex after she hugged Teodora.

The door slowly creaked open. Dad tutted and said a stern, "No Ariel. We'll figure everything out tomorrow when court starts again."
Teodora did her best to mask her disappointment. Tomorrow she had planned on snooping around her parents text messages so acting innocent now would work to her advantage. "Should we eat after Joey's nap? Alex and I haven't eaten," she said.

"Okay, I," Dad started to say but laughed at Ariel. "What's with the face?"
Ariel pointed inside. "Joey just said he wants pho."
Everyone laughed, especially Teodora. "That boy loves his Vietnamese food, just like his sister," Mom giggled.
Dad leaned in. "If you skip your nap, you have an early bedtime." Teodora laughed when Joey darted outside to hug Teodora's legs. "I take that as a yes," Dad laughed again as Teodora boosted her little brother up on her hip and they went to the rental car.

I have to figure out how to introduce Joey to NHL people without him getting too excited to accidently blab about the rooming situation, she thought. Michael was always dropping hints for Joey to come to New York but she'd have to think of a way to keep her secret a secret. Plus she knew Joey would die of happiness at the thought of more sports. "So we're going to Little Saigon?" Teodora called up to the front once they started the forty minute drive.
"You tell us Vietnamese Master," Mom joked.

Teodora laughed as Joey began to list off his favorite Vietnamese food. Pho, com tam, che, soda chahn...As he contemplated on his absolute favorie, she felt her pocket buzz. U skipped the LA game? Michael had texted her.
Teodora did her best to hide her panic from her unaware parents and Lina. She still knew he would panic over the foster system part of her life so she partially lied. Yeah, parents said eat and go to sleep.
As Michael texted back a lol no shit, Dad called, "Teo, don't fall asleep just yet!"

Teodora stuck out her tongue as Mom laid a hand on her Dad's arm. "Oh no. She won't fall asleep when it involves the good Vietnamese food."
She tugged the skin under her eye and stuck out her tongue-a Korean gesture she had learned as a child that never failed to send her parents into gales of laughter. Even the Ranger boys got a good laugh at her when she did it.
Lina suddenly groaned. "I've been dying for pho," she admitted.

Despite her anger for her cousin, Teodora couldn't help but laugh. Having been in Afghanistan, especially near the Pakistan border, there was no way she could have a chance of encountering any sort of Vietnamese food. Teodora herself ached to go see her adopted family's country but it would be tough without her Hispanic and Asian foods readily available.

After having a good meal, they made their way back to the hotel where Alex and Teodora were ready to pass out. The next day, they woke up to discover the parents had already left.
"They went to court," Lina said as she smeared sunscreen on Joey. Today her tone seemed nicer so Teodora decided to make no snide remarks back. "You go suck down the Asian stuff you can't get in New York." Before Teodora could make a comment that Lina had been farther away, Lina spoke again. "I'm the one that didn't grow up with Asian neighbors. I'm not desperate for that stuff."

They both laughed and went their separate ways. Once they were well on their way to Honda Center, Teodora and Alex were deep into their strategies as Ariel and Sara started laughing at them.
"You wait and see how big Downie is or how fast Stamkos is," Alex scoffed. "Lets see you laugh then."
Sara shook her head and hugged Alex's arm as Ariel scoffed back at her brother. "C'mon. You know martial arts. You and Teodora always beat each other up."

Chest heaving in and out, Alex protested. "Yeah right! Use martial arts on a player that makes millions!" They hardley paid attention when the ticket person gave them a surprised look that this odd group knew hockey players as they continued to argue and discuss strategies.
Biting her lip, Teodora declared, "Maybe we should split up. You and Sara then me and Ariel," she said.
Alex nodded as Ariel grinned, "Just don't go hide to make out." Sara laughed and steered her boyfriend away as he made ugly faces at them.

"Split up for what? You kids sound like you're planning for war," a player noted in passing. Ariel grinned as Teodora slightly started when she saw it was Ryan Getzlaf. Guy will play in the Olympics! She thought in awe. Goddamn!
"Nah, she rooms with Michael Del Zotto in New York," Ariel started.

She shushed Alex's sister. "How about your brother got the idea to light off fireworks to scare Del Zotto and now he's practically called up the Toronto NHL militia," she said as Ryan bent over laughing. "So we're watching out for Stamkos and Downie."
He had to catch his breath from laughing before he pointed to the left. "Okay. Visitor's hallway is that way," Ryan said. "Maybe stay on our family side? They're probably here looking over footage cause they played LA last night."

"Probably," she agreed. Now that she was getting better at this hockey stuff, she knew generally what the schedules were. "Though I hope you're not a Toronto kid at all. I don't think so cause you don't sound like DZ."
Ryan laughed. "Nope. No Toronto. Regina."
Before all this hockey stuff, Teodora barely knew a thing about Canada. As Ariel frowned, Teodora proudly called out, "Saskatchewan. Thank God I'm getting better at this hockey stuff."
"Really? I'm guessing you're local then," Ryan said.
Teodora nodded. "Yeah pretty much around LA when we were real young, then San Francisco for both of us."
Someone called for Ryan to do Olympic interviews. Ariel raised her eyebrows in shock as Teodora waved a goodbye. "Good luck even though we're here for Tampa," she joked.

As Ryan left, Ariel said, "I gotta pee and wtf? That's an Olympian?"
Teodora nodded. "He's playing, I think a few of his teammates. Stamkos I heard was reserve, uh, Eric Staal who you may meet someday is on the team. At least for the Canadians. As for the foreign Rangers Gaby's playing for Slovakia, Callahan and Drury are on the US team, Olli Jokenin's playing for Finland then of course Hankie's the goalie for Sweden."

Blinking a few times, Ariel said nothing until she sighed. "I think I need NHL player flashcards." They found a women's bathroom so Teodora took the chance to pull out her phone. No texts from Alex so she took a moment to text Michael. Looks like we're still roomies. She doubted there would be no replies for awhile due to a game so she pocketed her phone and waited for Ariel to finish up in the bathroom. She could hear male voices down the hallway that had to be hockey players so she glanced down, curious to see more Anaheim players. One bulkier guy gave her a slick smile as he approached. "You an ice girl?"

"Pfft," she scoffed back. "Californians fall on their ass when they skate. Long story but did you pass Tampa people down the hallway?" Ignoring him wanting to blatently flirt, she crept a little down and hid behind a propped open door. When she leaned to peer, she saw a dark haired guy peering as well down the hallway. "Oh fuck!" She breathed, praying it wasn't Steve Downie. Of course she'd get stuck with the enforcer chasing her down.

Unslinging her purse, she decided to throw it at Ariel when she came out. Finally after what felt like ages, Ariel came out and just in time.
"Oh Teo-ooo," Steve Downie called.
Giggling, she took off sprinting, throwing her purse at Ariel. "ALEX RUN IF YOU CAN HEAR ME!" She bellowed as Steve started cackling behind her.

An accented voice-either Marty St Louis or Vinnie Lecavailier called, "Run Downie's coming!"
"RYAN GETLZAF! GETZLAF!" She yelled as she passed the Duck's locker room. His head poked out and he swore an oh shit when he saw Downie was the one chasing her.
"Here kid!" She heard Ryan call as she blew past him. Steve bellowed a loud shit as Ryan grabbed his ankle and tried to trip him up. "Fowler block him!"

Anaheim's big name draft pick for that year grinned and did his best to grab on to Steve's arm as he sprinted past. It slowed him down some, allowing Teodora to put some distance between them. She passed a door, halted and eyed the parking garage door. "I can do steep inclines," she panted and opened the door. No way Steve's hometown had the inclines like San Francisco did so she would go to another level of the parking garage and come back into the rink. Not hearing any sound, she slowed down to a walk to conserve her energy.

Alert, she walked briskly up the parking garage. "I haven't seen Stamkos at all," she noted aloud. "Or Alex." Teodora reached for her phone when she heard a banging sound behind. She swore and took off sprinting as she started laughing again.
To her right, a car came around the turn and she jumped out of the way just in time. "Shit!" The guy called and grabbed Teodora as she darted by. "I hit you. Are you okay?"
American, she noted his accent but was keen to bolt away instead. "Didn't hit me. All good," she said and tried to pull away.
The guy-she looked at his face and did actually recognize him as Bobby Ryan kept a good grip on her. "I was fucking around on my phone and hit you. Here, I'll have medical staff look at your hip."
Teodora yanked her wrist hard. "C'mon! I go to an Ivy League school so I can be a doctor! I know when my goddamn body is hurt! And you didn't hit me!"

Someone in blue was jogging towards them-she panicked but then saw it was Marty. "Hey kid. Came to help. You're not too bad running," he laughed.
Jumping at the chance, she said, "Hey, you're kinda like a big brother like Downie and Stamkos are. Tell him to let go!"
Marty's spine straightened as Bobby explained, "I hit her but she keeps trying to bolt on me."
"Cause you didn't hit me!" She shot back. "I'm from the big city! I know to watch out for goddamn cars more than all you small towners!"
However Marty looked at her and said, "Maybe we should double check. Just to be safe."

Teodora threw her arms up as she was forced along to the Anaheim locker room. Angrily she texted Ariel demanding that she come to free Teodora from Bobby's ridiculousness.

Though on another note, I should explain that Teodora's adopted family is a fictional family from Afghanistan. I'm having them sort of be like the Kennedy's of Afghanistan-so a big name political family and the grandfather (whom I haven't exactly introduced yet) is sort of like a mix of Martin Sheen's character from the West Wing and the father in the Kite Runner. Lol, so don't go looking them up in Wikipedia expecting them to be real ;)
