Crossing the Line

Chapter One

I looked around the barren apartment one last time. Although there was no place for anything to hide, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was forgetting something.
"Are you ready to go," Myra asked.

"I don't think I've forgotten anything, though I don't know where anything could be hiding at this point." I replied turning towards my gorgeous roommate since freshman year.

She sadly nodded. Our - correction, the apartment had been completely cleared of everything we had bought and collected the last four years in Evanston. Now it was all divided between the two of us, half moving in with Myra and half flying with me to Pittsburgh. Everything Myra was keeping had already been moved into her boyfriend's city apartment, but last week when I was helping her move, I didn't think I would be moving, too. Though she was moving out, we planned on seeing each other whenever we could. But now I had no idea when I was going to see her next. What was originally supposed to be a fifteen miles seperation was now four-hundred sixty one point two miles. Yes, we had googled how far away we would be living from each other.

Myra gently tapped me on the arm. "Tess, Will's here....." Her boyfriend, Will, had offered to drive me to the airport. They had been dating since senior year of high school and had remained together ever since, even though she attended Northwestern and he the University of Chicago. I had liked her tall, athletic blonde from the moment I met him four years ago, and ever since the three of us had been inseparable. Even when they shortly broke up, Will and I would still text. Myra didn't mind; in fact, she encouraged our friendship. Though they never discussed marriage, I was ecstatic when he asked her to move into his Chicago bachelor pad. Of course, the plan was for me to remain at our apartment until I found a new roommate or a smaller place for myself. It was convenient being close to campus, as I was supposed to work in the athletic department in the fall.

Myra picked up a large moving box and headed for the door. "I'll meet you at the car, 'kay?"

I nodded. "Sure, give me a minute? I just want to make sure we didn't forget anything. Tell Will I'll be right out?"

I hurried to my bedroom and surveyed ma chambre for the last time. Content, I checked Myra's room and the kitchen. Confident nothing had been left, I grabbed my two remaining bags and hurried outside, locking the door on my way out.

Will spotted me and jumped out of his SUV. He met me at the door as I was sliding the key into my pocket. He took one bag from me and opened the Tahoe's trunk. "What did you put in here, an elephant?" Typical Will, trying to lighten the mood with a little joke. "I hope you're checking these."

"Mmmhhmm," I responded, lifting my bag into the trunk. I climbed into the backseat while Will moved the luggage and box around, then closed the trunk and got into the driver's seat. Will started the car, pulled away from the curb, and we were off. No one spoke as we drove to O'Hare, which was just fine with me. I didn't feel like talking; I wanted to appreciate the last hour I had with the perfect couple.

Will pulled up in front of my gate and turned off the car, but no one moved.
Finally, Myra broke the silence. "We'll see each other really soon! It's not like you're moving across the country; it's only a few hours' drive," she said, turning in her seat so she could look at me.

"I know," I said sadly. "I just....." I didn't know what to say. We both knew this day would come; we weren't in college anymore, and we couldn't live like we were. Finished college, there was always a possibility of moving for work. In this economy I was lucky to have been offered a job, yet I couldn't help but feel depressed.

Will got out of the car to give me and Myra some privacy. Making himself useful he got a luggage cart and got to work moving my belongings from the trunk.

Myra reached back and took my hand in hers. I leaned forward, resting my head on her seat. "I don't want to go," I mumbled into the seat.

"I know babe, I know," she said, rubbing my head lovingly.
