If It's Over, Let It Go

Chapter One

Brooke blinked a few times before sitting up and reaching for the button that would make her alarm stop beeping. She considered lying down and falling back asleep but after a quick look at the time, she stood up and made her way to the bathroom. After she flicked on the light, she climbed into the shower and let the hot water run down her back. She remained in the shower for nearly half an hour before drying off and slipping into one of Jeff's Hurricanes hoodies and a pair of yoga pants.

She grabbed all of the clothing off the floor, including Jeff's that had been there for days, and tossed them into the hamper and headed down to the kitchen to make a glass of tea. When it was ready, she settled onto the couch with a pile of textbooks.

She didn't look up from her studying until the front door opened and closed and in walked a smiling but exhausted Jeff.

He kicked his shoes off and walked over to her, pushed a piece of damp hair off her face and kissed her gently on the lips, "Hey, babe"

She stood up to give him a hug,"How was the trip?"

"Good", he said simply.

"Um,so, what are your plans for today?"

Jeff walked over to the kitchen, "A few of the guys are coming over, if that's okay"

"Uh, sure, I was going to go get groceries anyway", she mumbled.

He smiled at her before jogging up the stairs but it wasn't the huge, dimply smile she was used to. When he came back he was dressed in his nice jeans and a clean hoodie.

"They're coming now?"

"Is that okay?", he asked. Brooke shrugged

"It's fine. Have fun"

She grabbed her purse and slipped on a pair of boots and left. Jeff didn't say goodbye.

She didn't know why they had gotten like this around each other. All she wanted was to go back to the way things used to be, when Jeff would do absolutely anything to be with her. Now it was like he wanted nothing to do with her and she had no idea what to do about it.

Struggling, Brooke balanced three grocery bags on her hip and grabbed her keys from the pocket of her hoodie. She then managed to grab the rest of the bags and close the trunk of her car with her elbow. She struggled with the door, only to have it opened by one of Jeff's teammates, Cam.

He grabbed both arms of grocery's from her and set them on the table. She smiled at him.

"Thank you"

Cam nodded and rooted through the bags, taking out the things he knew the place of, putting them away for her. She finished putting away the rest of the groceries before she slipped her boots off and walked down the hall to the living room, where Jeff sat with most of his team, watching something on TV.

Jeff glanced up when she walked into the room but then turned his attention back to the TV. She walked up the stairs to their bedroom and picked up Jeff's clothes that he'd left all over the ground before grabbing her books.

Jeff actually smiled at her when she walked by again, "Where you going?"

"Library",she said softly, climbing over a few guys legs so she could lean over and kiss him. She waved goodbye to the guys and closed the door behind her.

She picked the same spot she always did in the library, right beside a huge window. She opened her textbook and began reading.

After a while, she sighed. She'd been reading the same sentence over and over again, not getting anything out of what she was reading.

But the thing was, school wasn't hard for her. She actually enjoyed spending time in class and at the library. In fact, she would rather be at the library, reading the same chapter over and over then at home with Jeff. Not that Jeff had been home much lately and when he had, he'd always had someone from the team over.

A few minutes later, she slammed her textbook closed and walked back out to her car. Clearly she wasn't going to be able to study today. She left her books in the car and walked up toward the door. When she got inside, she was surprised to see that the guys had left the house in pretty good condition, no beer bottles or anything all over the floor.

She walked into her room and changed into a pair of pajama shorts. The shower was on so she climbed into bed and turned on the TV, flipping channels until she found an old episode of one of her favorite shows.

She looked up when Jeff walked out of the bathroom, just wearing his briefs. He smiled at her and sat down beside her, wrapping his arm around her shoulder. She leaned into him and smiled when he pressed a kiss on the top of her head.

"You're coming to the game tonight, right?", he asked, like she hadn't been to every one of his home games since she'd moved to Raleigh.

"Of course"

"Good. I feel like I've barely seen you lately"

Brooke bit her lip. She wanted to scream, to throw something at him. She wanted to tell him that the only person he had to blame was himself. That maybe the reason he never saw her was that he was always on the road and when he wasn't, he was with the guys. But she didn't say anything, instead curling into his chest and letting the silence surround them.
