To the Keystone
Chapter 1
I inserted the key in the lock, and twisted it. The door unlocked with a click, and I stepped into the dark room, flicking the light switch.
I was in a fairly small room with two desks, and a bunch of awards and plaques on the walls. I closed the door, and sat down behind my desk, laying my briefcase down flat on the desk.
My name is Jake Belanger. I am 23 years old, and I am the coach of the Nelson Leafs. The Leafs are a Junior B hockey club from the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, or the KIJHL. They are based in Nelson, BC, Canada.
I opened my briefcase, and took out my notes, spreading them across the desk. The roster consisted of 30 boys from the ages of 16 to 20, who I could work with through the course of the next 9 months.
The door opened, and I glanced up to see Shawn Dooley. Shawn was my assistant coach, and he was a good person to work with.
"Hey Jake." He said, closing the door, and heading to his desk across the room.
"Hey Shawn. You're early." I remarked.
"Nah, I'm showing up when you do for this entire season." He told me with a smile.
I grinned, and nodded.
"Good. Can you get our schedule ready for me to look over?" I asked him, and he nodded, fishing around inside his desk for the schedule.
He pulled the papers out of his desk, and handed them to me.
"Thanks." I said, glancing at the schedule. "What's the date?"
"September 4th." He said, and I nodded.
"We play tomorrow. Grand Forks is coming."
