Boston's Girl

10

When she said she think about going to the wedding with Tyler, she didn’t think that she would get bombarded with text messages, flower bouquets, and even a fancy dinner to change her mind from saying no.

On that fateful Thursday morning at 6:00 A.M Riley grumbled as she rolled out of bed hearing the annoying alarm coming from her phone, when she flipped it over she didn’t realize that she already had three missed calls and multiple texts from Tyler.

I’m out front

Get your ass up now!

I have coffeeeeeee

She flipped the covers off of her, before texting him back

Sorry rolling out of bed now

By 6:05 she was dashing down the stairs of her apartment building after grabbing her luggage from the front door and lugging it down the steps with her. There did she see him, bundled up leaning against the car and sure enough two cups of coffee were in his hands.

“Boy Seguin you owe me big time for having me up before the sun,” she grumbled taking the coffee eagerly and pressing it to her lips.

He laughed, the breath coming from his lips rising in smoke in the cold air. “Don’t worry Riles, you can sleep on the plane.”

Even with the amount of coffee that she drank before getting on the plane, as soon as they were in flight she was knocked out. And it wasn’t more than two hours late was Tyler shaking his shoulder, waking her from her slumber.

“Wake up sleeping beauty, we’re here.”

She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and let out a short yawn, before realizing that the plane was actually descending into the Toronto airport.

“I slept through the whole flight?” her voice was thick with sleep, as she let out another yawn and let her head fall onto his shoulder.

He let out a laugh, “yeah you did.”

They were the last people off the flight, Riley complaining that she was still too tired to move. By the time the elderly couple at the back of the flight had gotten off was when Riley had gained enough energy to lift herself out of the comfortable seat and on to platform.

“I’ll be right back,” Tyler whispered, his sunglasses over his eyes and backpack slung across his shoulder.

“Alright, I’m going to try and get another cup of coffee.”

It wasn’t until she was line at the airport Starbucks did she realize she was actually getting nervous. It would be the first time she would be meeting his family, she didn’t know why meeting his family made her so nervous, it wasn’t like they were an item or anything just friends. She tried to keep telling herself that and the more that she did the less and less convincing it actually sounded. It had only been a month since they met, and she felt like she’s known this boy her whole entire life.

“You get your coffee?”

She was suddenly startled when Tyler placed his hand on the small of her back, it wasn’t until then did she realize she was just staring blankly at the barista in front of her.

“No, we can just get one on the way there.”

They made their way over towards the rental car that was sitting in its designated parking spot. Riley climbed in while Tyler popped the trunk and placed the suitcases inside.

Riley let her body sink into the leather of the car’s seats, taking in the warmth that it provided. As tired as she was, she didn’t think that she’d be able to sleep on the car ride to Tyler’s family’s home. She didn’t know why but she was nervous about meeting his family, their opinion mattered everything to him, and even though they were just friends, the more and more she told herself that the less and less convincing it started to sound.

“Are you alright?” Tyler smiled, his eyes furrowing as he took the exit off the freeway.

She pursed her lip, and caught his stare out of the corner of her eye.

“What if they don’t like me? What if they just think I’m just another hussy you’re bringing home? Like what do I even call your mom, Mrs. Seguin?” It all came out at once that she had to suck in a decent amount of air just to catch her breath.

He let out a chuckle, stopping at the red light ahead of him. “No don’t do that, it makes her feel old. And don’t worry about them, there going to love you.”

“You have two sisters right?”

“Yeah, Cass and Candace, but they’re brats, don’t worry about them. It’s really my mom you need to win over.”

Suddenly she didn’t feel so great as he sped off as soon as the light turned green, and turned into the third street on the right, pulling into the last driveway at the end.

“We can just leave the bags here, I’ll get them later.” He said before helping her climb out of the car, her tired legs still weak.

He let himself in, “Mom, we’re home!” he called into the house.

They heard pitter patting on the floor and in seconds, Tyler was tackled by the baring welcoming hug of his mother.

“I’m so happy you’re home,” she mumbled into his t-shirt, her voice cracking.

Riley stood there awkwardly, as Tyler and his mother embraced, it was cute she had to admit, but still the nerves fluttered around in her stomach, just knowing that his mother hadn’t caught on that she was standing there.

“Oh, mom this is Riley.”

Her eyes lit up when she saw Riley, and then too was Riley wrapped up in the warm embrace of Jackie Seguin.

“It’s so nice to meet you, sweetheart. You’re more gorgeous then Tyler described.”

Instantly both of their cheeks got warm the blood rushing to them changing them from the pale white, to the peachy pink.

“Jesus, can we keep it quite down here, some of enjoy sleeping past 9:30”

Riley looked up to the staircase above her, to notice a short blonde bouncing down the stairs.

“Well good-morning to you too, Can” Tyler smiled, wrapping his sister in a hug.

“You couldn’t have picked an earlier flight?” The sarcastic tone and the tiredness in the girls voice lightened the mood in the room, and Riley wasn’t feeling as nervous anymore, she had already gotten through the hard part of meeting his mom and one of his sisters. What else could go wrong?

“Riley if you don’t mind you’ll be staying in Candace’s room. Tyler sweetie, why don’t you go grab the luggage, and Candace show Riley where she’ll be staying.”

Candace smiled, and grabbed Riley’s hand. “Anything to go back to bed,” she grumbled lightly. “C’mon Riley.”

They bounded up the stairs and down the hall.

“That’s Tyler’s room,” Candace pointed, to the light colored door, marked with the letter ‘T’. “And this… Is my room.” She opened the door that was directly across from Tyler’s, and it made Riley feel a little more comfortable knowing that he was just across the hall if she ever needed him.

Candace took a seat on her bed and patted the spot next to her for Riley to take.

“I’m really happy he’s met you, he’s happy almost every time I talk to him.”

Riley blushed, “We’re just friends,” she stated simply.

Candace looked almost shocked. Had Tyler not told his family that they were nothing more than just friends?

“Really?” She asked obviously confused. “You’re the only girl he’s ever brought home.”
