Boston's Girl

15

The months seemed to have slipped from them; the winter season going as fast it came, bringing the warmer weather into the city of Boston. They were both as busy as ever, with the Bruins clinching a spot into the playoffs, Riley worked tirelessly on the media coverage, while Tyler was locked into more workout sessions and drills on the ice, but they always seemed to find time for each other at the end of the day even if it meant catching a quick drink at the bar, or dinner on his patio overlooking the city below.

With the warmer weather they were able to get out more enjoying the city that they called home. To say that she wasn’t head over heels for him was the understatement of the century, it warmed her heart everyday when she got to see his goofy grin waiting for her at the garden exit; and she knew that his feelings were mutual. On the occasion that they were caught out they usually turned in early before their desire for one another got to be too unbearable. And that caught on all too soon to the Boston media scene, and the female Seguin fan-base, where at least once a day did she run into the hate that one of his fans were to send her way.

It wasn’t until they were taking one of their strolls with the addition of Marshall, that it hit her that the amount of time they were spending together was coming to an end. In the next few weeks her internship was coming to an end, and she would be starting her final semester of school come September.

He had noticed her unnatural quiet self as they walked, something that puzzled him. He was sure he hadn’t done anything to piss her off. In fact they rarely fought, and if it did it last only a few hours before they would spend the rest of the time making up in the bedroom. He grew concerned knowing that being as quiet as she was was never a good thing.

He wasn’t about to beat around the bush though, if something was bothering her; he wanted to know about it.

“You’re quiet tonight,” he joked hoping to lighten the mood a bit.

She had been staring off watching the chocolate lab paddle in the water as the stopped in front of the small pond taking a seat on the grass. She hadn’t even noticed she was being quiet until he had said something to her. She turned her head to catch him looking at her, his deep brown eyes filled with concern, as she remained silent just a moment longer.

“I was just thinking,” she mumbled, picking up the stick that Marshall had brought to her and throwing it back into the water.

His eyebrows rose in curiosity, “Oh yeah, about what?”

She knew she was being silly and overdramatic about the whole thing, but she also knew that he wasn’t going to drop the subject as easily as she would’ve hoped.

“Work, us, the future. Just the usual stuff.”

It was something about the way she had said the sentence that made him feel like he should just drop the subject right then and there, but there was also something about it that had him wondering what she thought of them as a couple and what kind of future they did have together- something that he thought about daily. Never did he think when he started this relationship with her that he would be in so deep. He had only had two serious girlfriends in his whole life, one during high school, and another that you could probably barely count as a relationship as she was just someone that he’d met when he was drunk and eventually they ended up going out on a few more dates. But with Riley it felt different, he felt more of an adult when he was with her, it was something about her that made him grow up, and when the opportunity came to go out with friends, he began to find himself opting out knowing that he’d be miserable without her the whole time.

He wrapped and arm around her shoulder giving it a slight squeeze, “Alright, what is about those three things that has you so quiet. It must be pretty important, you never one to stay silent long.”

She sent a shove his way, barely making his large body move. “It’s silly. I don’t know why I was thinking so much about it.”

“If you tell me what you were thinking about I’ll tell you a secret of mine.”

She sighed, picking up the stick that dog dropped in front of her, throwing it back into the pond of him to retrieve once again.

“Ril,” Tyler said, watching her as she said silently next to him.

She buried her face into the fabric of his shirt hoping that when she spoke he’d barely be able to hear it.

“I’m going to miss you,” she mumbled barely above whisper.

He chuckled feeling the vibrations of her mouth through his shirt. He pushed her forehead away from his should hoping to hear her more clearly when she spoke again.

“I’m going to miss you,” she sighed defeated.

“Really?” he laughed, causing a pout to form on her face.

“I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere.”

He pulled her back into his body as a light wind had blown slightly sending a chill to run through her spine, thanking him for the comfort of his warm embrace.

“Stop!” she whined, sending a punch to the side of his ribs. “It’s not funny. I’m so used to seeing you at work everyday. It won’t be the same when I got back to school in September and you’re working.”

“You’re so abusive tonight,” he said causing his ribs to swell as he laughed. “But, Riles you know we’ll make it work.”

His grip on her figure tightened as he pressed a kiss to the top of her temple. She closed her eyes and relished on the moment that they had together right then an there, not giving a care in the world about what their future were to hold.

She was a mess at work the next day. Talking with Tyler the previous night had left her with one of the worst nights sleep she was sure she’d ever gotten.

She couldn’t seem to focus on anything, the piled of paperwork and the Bruins website taunting in front of her. But she was as busy as ever, as one of the best job she’d ever had was slowly coming to an end. In just a few short weeks she would no longer be needed in the PR department for Boston’s hockey team, leaving her to go back to school for one more fall semester to get her Bachelors Degree. To say that she felt bittersweet about the whole thing was an understatement, of course she was going to miss the people she worked with, they had become like a second family to her.

“Hey there lady!” Emma chirped, taking a seat on Riley’s desk.

Riley looked up from the computer screen, to see one of her closets friends.

“Hey, what’s up?”

The two had grown exceptionally close over the past few months and if it were anyone that Riley was going to miss the most it would be Emma.

“Nothing too much. Diane wanted to see you in her office for a second.”

Hearing that her boss wanted to see her in her office made Riley’s stomach churn. Never did she like being an office with an official it always made her feel like she was getting sent to the principles office like a high school student.

Riley stood up and pushed her chair back in, as Emma hopped off her desk.

“Oh and I wanted to see if you wanted to come catch dinner with a bunch of us after the game, bring Tyler if you’d like!”

Riley nodded, rubbing her sweating palms on the creases of her skirt.

“Sounds fun, I’ll check with Ty.”

As she made her way down the long hallway to her boss’s large enclosed office, she couldn’t help but wonder what it was that called for her to get sent. She knew she hadn’t done anything wrong, in fact she had been working over time to get extra stuff done. She should be getting a raise, not scolded.

Her shaky hands pressed against the glass door, knocking slightly before she was welcomed inside.

“Oh Riley!” Diane chirped, seeming rather pleased that she was there. “You were just the person I was looking for.”

Riley took a seat in front of the Diane’s desk, feeling more intimidated that she was sitting down.

“I’m sorry Diane, I don’t know what this meeting is called for?”

She clapped her hands together, “Oh of course you don’t! But I just wanted to let you know that I’ve been watching your work, and I have to say I’m quite pleased with what you’ve been doing. Never have I seen an intern put in as much work as you do.”

This made Riley’s cheeks turn pink, “Thank you, but I still don’t think I’m following.”

Diane smiled, placing her hands on her large mahogany desk. “Riley, after you graduate we want you to come and work with us… full time.”

Riley’s heart swelled with joy. She knew how rare it was for an intern to get called back to work full time, and she couldn’t help but feel proud of herself.

“Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much Diane! There’s no place I’d rather be than right here.”

Diane smiled back at her, “Well that’s all I needed to tell you, go take a half hour break. I think you deserve it.”

Riley smiled and nodded her head feeling the words get caught in her throat as she exited the office. She knew exactly where she wanted to go on her half hour and pressed the elevator button to the bottom floor.

There did she watch all of the Bruins players exiting the tunnel to head back into the locker room to shower and change. As she scanned the floor for Tyler she bounced up and down on her toes, anticipating his arrival.

As he stepped on the black foam, he was immediately tackled into a hug. Riley wrapping her legs around his waist and her arms tightly clinging onto his neck.

He stumbled back a few steps not expecting that his girlfriend would surprise him.

“Well hello to you too,” he laughed pressing a kiss to her lips.

He couldn’t help but notice the smile that was spread from ear to ear on her face.

“I got the full time job!” she squealed. “After I graduate I’m coming back to work full time!”

“Riley that’s awesome! I’m so proud of you!”

She pulled her head back for a moment, tilting to the side in curiosity.

“You didn’t have anything to do with this, did you?”

In all honesty he didn’t, he wish he’d thought of the idea but it was all her doing and hard work.

“Absolutely not, it was all you babe.”

“Good.”

She smiled resting her head on his shoulder finally feeling relieved that something in her life was going right.
