Boston's Girl

21

“Why can’t I come too? I feel fine, I swear!” Riley whined picking at the fleece blanket that sat atop her legs.

Tyler laughed, gathering his belongings that he had left scattered around her hospital room that have accumulated over the past couple of weeks.

“Because babe, you need to stay here and get better. Doctor’s orders,” he stated firmly.

She pouted, her bottom lip protruding and her lip beginning to quiver. It had figured that the first year she began working as an intern for the Bruins, they had made it into the Stanley Cup Finals, and she was stuck in a hospital bed on lockdown.

He chuckled. He knew how important these games were not only to his team, and to his city, but also to his girlfriend. She grew up watching the Bruins play hockey, and getting to know her family the past couple of days, he knew how much of a dedicated fan she was, even if she didn’t want to admit it.

He brushed her hair out of her face, and placed a kiss a top her head letting his lips linger longer.

“You just have to hold out for one more day, and then we’re getting out of this place. Going far away. Just you and me.”

A smile spread to her face. The gentle touch of his lips on top her skin, sent shivers through her body. It had been nearly a month since he had touched her like she needed, and even the simplest of his contact made her always want more.

She sighed, her fingers running through his hair at the nape of his neck.

“Why are you going in so early? I thought practice wasn’t going to be for another couple hours.”

Tyler packed up the rest of his overnight back throwing whatever was scattered on the cot beside her bed into it.

“Chiarelli and coach called me in. I’m not sure what about, but I figured I’d get on the ice before everyone else while I’m there.”

She nodded simply knowing how much he wanted to prove to everyone he wasn’t what they were saying about him. He didn’t go out partying every night, and he took his career as seriously than anything in his life. Also with the draft coming up in just a few short weeks, he wanted to prove to Boston that he wasn’t a player worth losing. He was finally able to call Boston home, and if it was ripped up from underneath him he didn’t know what he were to do.

She rested her now throbbing head against her soft pillow she had Tyler bring her during the course of her stay at the hospital.

“You okay?” Tyler asked noticing how pale she was getting.

Her fingers pressed against her temples, and her vision grew foggy.

“Just my head hurts. Can you call the nurse for me?”

Tyler stopped packing up his belonging, and called the nurse from the side of her bed.

The small elderly gray haired lady came running through the doors no less than a minute later.

“You okay, sweetie?” She asked, her voice concerned as she checked her vitals.

“She just said her head was starting to hurt again,” Tyler answered for her. He crossed his arms, and rubbed his chin with his forefinger and thumb, growing anxious as the elderly nurse dictated what was wrong with his girlfriend. He had to leave for the garden in less than 10 minutes, and knowing that Riley wasn’t feeling well again made him nervous.

“Ty, you can go,” Riley said weakly.

He looked at his watch and then his girlfriend.

“I swear, Brit will be here soon and my families coming back later to watch the game with me. I’ll see you after.”

She could see the look of concern and debate on his face. She knew he would want to be here when she wasn’t feeling well again, but he also had to get to this meeting that was supposedly super important.

Tyler placed a kiss atop her forehead, getting out of the way of the nurse who was getting ready to medicate her again.

“Love you. I’ll see you when the games over.”

“Okay,” Riley smiled.

“… Okay sweetie, this will knock you out for a few hours get rid of that nasty headache you have,” Tyler heard as he left the hospital room.

Tyler’s skates touched the ice just twenty minutes after leaving Riley. He knew that he should’ve been there with her, but he needed to get back on the ice before final most crucial games of his career. It was the second time being in the Stanley Cup Finals in his three years of being the in NHL, and he was only twenty-one.

“Segs!”

Tyler turned on the ice, swearing that he was the only one in the building but was stopped by his coach Claude Julien.

“Mind if I see you in my office for a minute?”

Tyler could feel the lump in his throat forming, he never liked being alone in his coaches office knowing that when coach called you into his office you were in deep shit.

He hopped over the boards, following Coach Julien into the small corner spaced office that sat just before locker room. Following the coach into his office reminding him of when he used to get in trouble with his dad, back when he lived at home. He thought of Julien of as a father too, he set him straight when he got out of line, and wasn’t afraid to deal with his shit.

“Tyler,” Claude Julien sucked in a deep breath. “You’re being traded.”

Riley rubbed her eyes and yawned, her head free from pain.

She looked around the room noticing that Britney was wrapped up in the blankets that were on Tyler’s empty bed.

“Brit,” Riley whispered hoping to wake up her sleeping friend.

Brittany stirred for a moment, noticing that Riley was awake.

“Hey! You’re finally up!”

Riley nodded, “Where is everyone I thought we were going to watch Tyler’s game together?”

“You slept right through it.”

Riley noticed the clock on the television that flashed 3:50 A.M.

“Where’s Tyler?”

Brittany jumped from her seat, taking the spot beside Riley on her bed. She was dreading telling her best friend some of the worst news she was going to hear.

“Riles…” Brittany hesitated. “Tyler got traded. He’s probably on his way to Dallas, right now.”
