Not Daddy's Little Girl

In Cahoots

February 1, 2013
Vancouver, British Columbia, Rogers Arena

Jaslyn watched the clock above her head as it dwindled down to 00:02. She sighed then called a timeout. One of the refs blew his whistle and the boys on the ice skated over to the respective benches. She looked over and saw Jason was looking at her and gave her a wink, she smiled at him then watched him skate to the home bench. When her team stood around the bench she looked around at her team in front of her and looked at the faces of the men in front of her.

“Corey I want you to stay in net. I have a gut feeling that this is going to go to shootout. Lu’s playing a good game and I don’t think that he’s going to let up now.”

Everyone nodded.

“If I’m correct I want Toews, Kane and Sharp ready for the shootout.”

She told the three. Jonathan and Patrick Kane looked at each other and nodded, then looked over at Sharp and the three of them did the same thing.

“Now I’d like to know who is at the top of the league right now?”

“We are.”

The men around her said in a somewhat normal tone of voice.

“Who is it? Did you say Detroit?”

“We are.”

They told her a bit loader.

“Who are? I can’t hear you.”

“We are!”

The players somewhat yelled. Jaslyn smiled at her team.

“Now I want you all to go out there and show them who’s number one.”

With the team with a little spring in their step Toews line skated out for the five minutes of overtime.

Jaslyn looked over at the home bench seeing the faces of her friends. She didn't know how a lot of them felt about her being behind this bench. She knew that they were happy for her but being conference rivals changes things.

She watched her boys skate around the ice fighting for the puck against the hometown boys in blue. Whenever Jason was on the ice her eyes went to him, hoping that her team won’t do anything stupid with him.

Looking up she saw that three minutes had already passed. The overtime was more that half way over and her prediction was almost coming true.

A while was blown and she saw Kane on the ice and Jason was talking to the ref.

“Shit babe.”

She said to herself.

Patrick was bring himself up off the ice. Nothing looked broken on his face. Jason then was being pushed away by the ref to the penalty box. She shook her head at the call. However not known what even happened with the play. Kane skated over to the beach and Bollig opened the door for him.

“You okay Kaner?”

She asked as play resumed and her ice now never leaving the ice.

“Fine.”

He said looking up at the jumbo-tron. She looked over at him and rolled her eyes at the back of his head. She wasn’t impressed by him in the last month. He still hasn’t given her an ounce of respect since January, and it was pissing her off.

The clock was now at 00:07.

“Towes I want you up first.”

She told the captain as she walked towards the glass that separated the two teams. She stood on top of the bench and jumped down so she was in front of Stalberg and Saad. She rested her forearms on the side of the boards.

The buzzer sounded and the ice cleared of the players. Jason skated towards her and smiled.

“Hey beautiful.”

“Hi stud.”

Jaslyn said with a soft smile. And stopped in front of the bench and gave her a quick kiss.

“Love you.”

“Love you too baby.”

Jaslyn reached behind her and grabbed Saad’s stick and when Jason was skating away she hit his butt with it. He turned his head and smiled at her.

“See ya at home.”

She said with another smile. He laughed and Cory Schneider opened the door for him, and Jaslyn gave Saad back his stick. She looked back at Saad who was chuckling.

“Quiet Man Child.”

She said pointing a finger at him. Toews skated to centre ice and looked at the puck in front of him, then he looked in front of him. A hundred feet away from him Luongo was ready for the single shot from the Blackhawks captain. Toews’s stick hit the puck and he was off down the ice, aiming past the Canucks number one goalminder. Jayslyn held her breath and watched her team’s captain shoot.

Glove gave.

Cheers from the hometown team were heard throughout the arena. However Jaslyn heard something different from the people around her. A few of the cused at the blocked shot, while others shrugged it off, knowing that their were still four more shots left to do.

From the Canucks bench Alex Burrows came out of the door, he looked over at the visitors bench and smiled at Jaslyn. A smile that she returned to her good friend. A place in her brain and her heart told her that is was bad that she was standing here on the Chicago visitors bench. She was going against her best friends in the whole world. She coached a team that hated her boys in blue and green, and all the boys wanted to know the weaknesses of her boys she coached and the boys she could go have a beer in their backyard with.

When Burrows was close to the blue painted crease he took his shot and Corey blocked it with his left leg pad. Burrows cused in French at himself and the fellow French man in the visiting white jersey.

“Kane!”

“I know, I know.”

The blonde American boy said hoping over the bench. Jaslyn wanted to throw something at the younger boy. Instead she scoffed and rolled her eyes. Toews stopped his linemate for a second and said something to him. The two skated off in separate directions, Kane to centre ice and Toews to the bench standing next to where Jaslyn was.

“Sorry about him coach.”

Toews told her. Again she rolled her eyes and looked over at the red numbers that made the 88 on Kane’s back.

“He’s going to have to learn sooner or later that I’m going to have to bench him if he keeps acting like this.”

“You can’t do that.”

“Damn right I can. Last time I checked Toews I’m the coach. Whatever I say goes.”

Both her and Toews watched in silence as Kane’s shot was denied the back of the net by Luongo’s glove hand. Cheers erupted from the 18, 900 fans in the arena. Kane skated behind the net and hit his stick on the boards, breaking the fiberglass stick in half.

“Maybe he should cool it off during the Flames game.”

Toews didn’t say anything. He just watched his best friend come back to bench and slammed the door to the bench. He skated over to his best friend and looked at him.

“You have to tone it down and show her some respect.”

“Why should I? She’s not my coach.”

“Yes she is. Just because Q is not here doesn't mean you have to be a disrespectful little snot about it. He’s trusted her with us because she can hold her own with the 29 male coaches in the league. So shut your mouth and treat her like Q or she’s benching you.”

“She wouldn't do that. I’m the top scorer on the team.”

“She doesn't care. She’ll do it.”

With that he skated away from his friend and looked up to see that Maxime Lapierre had missed too with his slap shot on Crawford. Then Sharp came off the bench and padded him on the shoulder before taking his place at centre ice to try to score on the the Montreal native. Again cheers came from the fans around the ice. The Blackhawks were not expecting this, Roberto Luongo was on fire.

Jaslyn looked around the bench at the players in white, then at the clipboard in her hands. The papers on the board were of the game night’s roster and notes that she had made before and throughout the game. Moving her finger along the names of the NHL’s she stopped at the number eight and tapped the name a few times.

“Leddy. Your time to shine.”

He looked at his coach and nodded then got up off the bench and went to centre. His teammates yelled words of encouragement at him. All eyes were on him. Jaslyn stood up so she wasn't leaning on the boards and looked over at the Canucks benching seeing that their eyes too were on the 21 year old. Jaslyn made eye contact with Alain Vigneault. She smiled at him and opened her mouth.

“So who you putting in AV? Henrik? Kesler?”

Vigneault laughed at her. He loved that the fact that she was the coach of their conference rival she was still being the friendly, cocky girl that she had always been.

“Mind your own business Quenneville. It’s not my boys you have to worry about it’s your’s ability to score.”

Jaslyn rolled her eyes at him.

“Loser buys the winner a beer?”

“You’re on. I hope you like the tease of defeat.”

Jaslyn’s blue eyes went to the shooter in white. He took his time skating up to Lungo then when he was about 15 feet or so away he fired. The puck didn't even hit the goalie padding anywhere, the shot fired and went high, hitting the glass far above Luongo.

“Damnit Leddy.”

Then she saw Jordan Schroeder skate out to the middle of the ice under the jumbo-tron. To herself in a low voice that no one could hear, she said,

“Come on Schroeder.”

Watching him skate towards Crawford, Jaslyn and everyone else in the arena held their breath, waiting for either the centre or the netminder to make a move. The shot was taken, then the red light went off. The puck was in the back of the net and Crawford was already making his way to the visitor's bench. The door was opened for him and he took off down the hallway to the dressing room.

Jaslyn watched as the Canucks went out to congratulate their number one goaltender. Around her fans were celebrating their team’s win against the titan of the NHL standing.

Still no lost for the Hawks. Only lost of the season and they still got a point for the standings, keeping them at the top spot.

Jaslyn waited for her team to leave to the ice. She stood to the side and waited for the last player, Toews, to go into the tunnel, till she got out onto the ice to congratulate her former team. First she went to the bench to shake hands with the coaching staff. Vigneault had a huge smile on his face when he saw her.

“I hope you like Budweiser.”

“I’m more of a Molson girl myself.”

Jaslyn said with a smile. Alain laughed and then Jaslyn turned to see the players coming towards the bench. Jason say her and his face lit up even more from the high of the shootout win over the league leading team. He picked up the speed in his stride and picked her up in his arms. He went into kiss her but she moved her face away from his.

“You smell like a dirty gym sock.”

“You mean a sexy dirty gym sock.”

“Yeah whatever, your words not mine.”

She gave him a kiss on his beard covered cheek and he let her down onto the ice. Then the captain of the team skated up to her and gave her a quick hug.

“Good game Jassy. Miss you.”

“Yeah, you too Hank.”

She said looking over at him. Then some of the others came over to say hi and rub it in her face that they won. When Bieksa came over can gave her a huge bear hug and spun her around a few time before letting her back on the ice.

“I miss you Jassy!”

“Ah shucks Jusic. I miss you too.”

He just smiled down at her and gave her a kiss on the top of the head then he went off to the bench to leave to the dressing room.

Jaslyn looked up at Jason, who had his arm around her waist while he looked around the arena with a smile on his face.

“I gotta go. I’ll see you later?”

“Yeah. See you later. I better go yell at my team or something. I’m going to bench Kane, so yeah.”

“Bench his ass. He’s annoying as fuck.”

“I can agree with you on that.”

Jaslyn walked away from Jason and he heal onto her hand and gave her hand a kiss then they walked onto their respective benches and into their dressing rooms to meet their teams. When Jaslyn came into the visitor dressing room all the of the Blackhawks eyes went to her. They faces were either lined with anger at the lost or the the fact that their coach was in cahoots with the Canucks top paid defenseman.

“What?”

No one said anything. she looked around and found the wet head of blonde hair.

“Kane you’re out for the next game.”

She said as she walked towards the coach’s office. Kane threw his shoulder padding on the floor and stood up.

“What do you mean I’m out?”

Jaslyn stopped and turned around to look at the Buffalo boy.

“What it means Kane is that you are going to cool your ass in the suit while you look on seeing this team kick the shit out of Calgary. You can come back on the ice when you figure out that I’m your coach and you’ll have to give me an ounce of respect.”

With that Jaslyn walked out of the dressing room and into the coach’s office. She started to pack all of her work stuff into her backpack and her personal items into her purse. When the office was cleared of her things she turned the lights off and went to Roger Arena’s back hallways. She walked around for a few minutes till she was in front of the Canucks dressing room. From outside of the elevator like doors she could hear the sound of some upbeat pop song from inside. She rolled her eyes and stood against the wall. She pulled her phone out, unlocked it and looked for Jason’s number. Finding his number she hit call and his picture popped up and she held her phone to her ear. It rang three times before Jason answered.

“Hey baby.”

“Hey baby-cakes. I’m waiting for you.”

“Where?”

“Why don’t you walk over to the doors?”

Only the sounds from around the dressing room could be heard on the other line. Then the doors of the room opened and Jason stood a few feet from the opening with his phone to his ear. Jaslyn smiled at him. He made the motion for her to come into the room as he hung up his phone.

“Alright gentlemen. We have a lady entering the room.”

He said loudly. As Jaslyn walked though the threshold of the dressing room. When she walked in and Chris Higgins laughed.

“I thought you said a lady Jason?”

“Ha ha ha. Very funny Higgy.”

She said with a fake laugh. She walked up to Jason, who took her into his arms and kissed her. The rest of the Canucks all let out boos when the couple lips met. Jaslyn laughed into the kiss and looked up at Jason.

“I love your team.”

“Sadly they are our team.”

“Right. I don't want to be associated with them, but sadly I’m with your girlfriend.”

“Yes. It’s such a burden to be my girlfriend. I mean we've been together for almost seven years, and all the incredible sex. I mean it’s such a burden.”

Jaslyn smiled and rolled her eyes. He laughed and kissed her head.

“I’m gonna go get dressed. Just go over and mingle or whatever.”

Jaslyn nodded and walked over to where Bieksa, Raymond, and Kesler were standing. She walked up in between Raymond and Bieksa.

“Hey boys.”

“Well if it isn’t our favorite female coach ever.”

“I’m probably the only female coach your ever met May-Ray.”

“Ture ture.”

She moved so she went and sat in Bieksa’s stall. The three of them talked for a while then Tanev and Booth came over and joined the conversation. The six of them laughed and talked like it was old times and Jaslyn didn't have to go back to the hotel and leave for Calgary in the dark hours of the early morning with the team from the Windy City. Then Jason came into the small crowd that had formed around Jaslyn and held his hand out for her.

“Sorry boys, but I’d like to spend the rest of Ms. Quenneville's time here in our beautiful city with my company.”

More boos came from his teammates as Jaslyn rose to her feet and took her boyfriend’s hand.

“I’ll miss you boys. See you in a few weeks.”

Jaslyn said goodbye to everyone in the small group then said her farewells to the rest of the team. Her last goodbye was too Higgins.

“Bye Higgy.”

She said hugging him tightly. He returned the bear hug and kissed the top of her head.

“Bye Jassy. Take care of your old man for us.”

“Will do. See you in a few weeks.”

Chris nodded and then Jaslyn turned to leave with Jason out of the dressing room.

“I miss having you here.”

“I miss you too. It’s so lonely in Chicago, you have no idea. My apartment is so quiet all the time.”

“Why doesn’t your dad and everyone come over?”

“They do. But when I get home from work or a road trip, there’s no one to welcome me home when I get to the front door.”

“That’s how I feel. But I had Tanev come move in with me after a while. Don’t you have some girlfriends to move in with you? Or your sister?”

“I don’t know. I don’t trust anyone at my place when I’m not there. You know? The only person I want to be there is you.”

“I’m touched babe. I feel the same way. It’s different when I come home to Tanev half naked asleep on the sofa watching The Big Bang Theory. It’s not as great as if you did it.”

Jaslyn rolled her eyes and smiled. She moved her face closer to his right bicep and rubbed her cheek on his button down jacket sleeve.

“I love you too honey-cakes.”

Jason smiled and squeezed her hand a little bit tighter. She always came up with the most ridiculous pet names for him. That was one of the things that he loved most about her.

“I love you too doll face.”
