When Charlotte and I got off the plane we were laughing , because she had told me the story of when Sid came to visit her he had run straight into a sliding glass door. We laughed about that story for a while and got weird looks from people at the airport. When we went down to baggage check I turned on my phone and saw a text from Pat saying, "These are going to be some long months without you here... Jon is already complaining about how it's going to be forever since he sees you again. Save me..." I laughed at the text and let Charlotte read it while I grabbed our bags. She let out a laugh too.
We got a taxi to the rink since there was an optional practice that day since most of the team was flying in that night. When we arrived I felt myself go pale and Charlotte looked at me concerned. "You alright Amy?" she asked as we got out of the taxi. I shook my head and reminded her that coach said I'll have to pay for that fight I got into. We walked in silence into the locker room and were pretty quite while getting geared up. "You know you're coaches star player. It's not like he's going to make an ass out of you." Charlotte said lacing up her skates. I wasn't to sure about that. I saw Kim walk in and Charlotte and I both waived at her. "What's up bitches?" Kim said smiling and started to get geared up. "Nothing much just Amy's engaged to Jonathan Toews now." Charlotte grinned. Kim head shot straight towards me and her jaw was dropped, "LET ME SEE THE RING!" I showed her my left hand which still had Jon's Stanley Cup ring on. Kim drooled over my ring and kept congratulating me. I just smiled and headed out to the ice putting my gloves on and keeping my ring on.
As I stepped on the ice with Charlotte my heart began racing due to the thought of what is coach going to make me do to pay for my fuck up. "Amy, Charlotte, nice to see you guys on the ice tonight!" coach said from the bench. After a warm up lap coach called me over to the bench. "We're going to be doing Herbies. I want you to lead, so that means I want you in front as long as you can and by the way congrats on the engagement." coach said to me with a bit of a smile.
When we got to the part of practice where we do Herbies coach called me over again. "You okay Johnson? You don't look too well." coach said with a concerned look on his face. "I'm fine. Just a little knee pain. I'll be fine." I said breathing heavily. Coach gave me a glance over and said,"No. You're sitting out of this. Go have Doc check out that knee I don't want to risk anything." I skated out of the rink with my head down, I knew better than to argue with coach.
I walked into the med room. "What's up Johnson?" Doc looked at me smiling. "Coach wants you to check out my knee cause it's bugging me." I said sitting down. As Doc checked out my knee I just thought of Jon and how I missed him so badly. "Seems like you must have strained the ligament..." Doc said double-checking. "How long is it guna take?" I asked knowing I'd have to wait a bit before practicing. "A few days, a week tops." he said looking up at me. I let my head hang as Doc wrapped my knee for me. "Amy.. it won't be that long." Doc said smiling at me.
I hobbled over to my cubbie with the crutches Doc gave me and got in my street clothes as practice ended. Charlotte and Kim both gave me concerned looks. "It's just a strained ligament don't worry." I said as I headed to coaches office. When I got to the door I knocked and waited. "Come in." I heard coach say. I hobbled in and said, "While my knee heals can I assist you while you coach? I don't wanna just sit on the bench." I saw him think it over. "Yeah. Sure. Good way to make the girls respect you as their captain." he said looking me straight in the eyes. "Thank you coach." I said and left.
Charlotte was waiting for me at the place we were staying at while practice was in session. When I got in she was watching Spongebob and laughing at the kids show. I sat next to her and watched. She turned to me, "So how long you guna be out?" I sighed and said, "few days to a week." She shook her head. "It's my fault... I should have gotten to the other side when you had the puck and gotten hit. I could have taken that hit." she said blaming herself. I put my hand on her shoulder, "Hey, it's fine. Only a couple days." She looked at me and gave me a weak smile. I got up and hobbled to my room and called Jon.
"Hey babe. Do you know what time it is?" Jon's voice said over the phone. I looked at the clock and it read 11:46 pm. "I'm sorry baby I just wanted to hear your voice before I unwrap my knee and head to bed." I said feeling guilty. "Wait. Knee? What happened?" he said sounding alert. "It's a strained ligament I'll be back to new in a few days to a week." I said totally calmly hoping that my tone of voice would calm him down. On his side of the phone I heard Pat in the background say in a girly voice, "Come back to bed Jon" which made me start to laugh. "Shut the hell up Pat!" Jon said to his buddy. I heard Pat laughing. "Wow babe I'm not even gone for a day and you're already cheating on me with Kaner?" I said laughing. Jon laughed, "Yeah totally I'd cheat on you with that dip shit." In the background I heard Pat say, "I heard that you asshole!" We both cracked up. "Babe I gotta be up in like 6 hours... I really don't want to go but we have a game against the Blues tomorrow." Jon said sadly. "It's alright baby I understand. I love you." I said smiling. "I love you too and think about it in 15 days we play the Rangers at their rink. I can see you then." he said. I bit my lip, agreed with him, said goodnight and hung up. As I curled up under the blankets I realized how cold it was without Jon in the bed with me as I drifted off into sleep.
