Affection

Liz sat in her afternoon class, staring at the screen ahead of her blankly. This was her least favourite class, which is sad considering it was her only chosen option out of her entire 4 year program. 2 years in, half way there, one class to choose yourself. Liz didn't mind though, she loved her program; nursing. She sat in the large room at UMass thinking of how many places in Boston she would rather be right now but here. Just as she was drifting off even further into her thoughts, a hand waved in front of her face.
"Liz. Earth to Liz. Incoming on Liz."
She looked over at the reason she stayed sane in this class, Fred, who was staring at her eyebrows raised.
"Anything good?"
"Nah, just plotting my escape from this hell hole."
"It better have included a way out for me too."
"Never." She squinted at him, a slight smirk on her face letting him know she was joking.
"So, now that I have you back. What are you doing tonight?"
"Silly Freddy, you know that answer."
"I'm not letting you spend another friday night studying. You're young. Be wild and spontaneous for one friday night and break all the rules by coming out."
"I would be letting my sweat pants down if I did that."
"Well who do you love more, me or your sweat pants."
"You don't want me to answer that."
"Fine then, who has free Bruins tickets me or your sweat pants?"
"That means nothing, you ALWAYS have free Bruins tickets."
"Perks of the roommate. Now you said and I quote 'one of these times, I will join you' and I've decided that the time is now."
"You're not going to drop this are you?"
His only answer was a satisfied smile that spread across his features.
"Fine. I'll disappoint my sweat pants just for you, feel honoured."
"And you're coming out after."
"I'm already breaking habit and actually going to a game, what more do you want from me?"
"Already told Tyler you were joining post-game celebration." He slid her his phone, providing evidence. She knew there was no way out of it once Tyler had been informed, so she sighed in defeat.
"Half the girls in Boston would kill to get free game tickets and then party with the team after, you would rather be in sweat pants."
"Do I get any points since they ARE Bruins sweat pants?"
"No."
"Not fair."
"Completely fair. The only reason you have them is Tyler left them at your place and you refused to give them back."
"Finders keepers, Fred!"
From the front of the room, she recognized the familiar sound of her favourite part of the entire class.
"See you next week."
With that, Liz shut her laptop and deposited in her bag. She turned to Fred who was standing beside her.
"Pick you up at 6?"
She scoffed in mock disgust. "I guess."
"Perfect. And the sweat pants are staying home."
"Fine, but if they want answers I'm calling you!"
He was already walking away from her but turned, walking backwards to yell "Dress nice, look hot, maybe if you get some you'll break up with the sweat pants Liz."
"I get plenty, thank you very much."
"That's what you think!" He turned, pushing open the door. "6, look hot!"

The guys were in the locker room after their afternoon practice before the game. They were all talking amongst themselves, discussing their plans to go out after that evenings game. It never usually happened that the entire time got together, but after an entire week of games without a break, they decided they needed a night of fun. Tyler looked over at Adam, with a smirk on his face.
"So Quaider, you coming out tonight?"
It wasn't often that Adam came out with them after games and everyone knew that.
"Segs, you know the answer to that one."
"Come on man, one night. We've had a good run lately, you deserve a break, let the mullet down and have a good time."
"I-"
Tyler cut him off again. "Come out, if you don't want to stay you can leave at midnight, but at least try?"
Tyler, the life of the party, was always up for a night of fun and Adam knew there would be no easy way to get out of this one.
"Fine. Midnight."
"Midnight." With a satisfied smile on his face, Tyler left the locker room with Adam following soon behind.

5:55pm and Liz saw the screen of her phone light up with the picture ridiculous picture of his face she had taken as her caller ID for Fred. Circling her freshly done hair once more with hairspray, she shook her head answering the phone.
"You're early."
"I like to call it being punctual."
"Yeah, yeah. I'll be down in a minute."
She hung up, grabbing her purse and throwing her phone in it before running into her room grabbing her Seguin jersey from the closet and walking towards her roommates room.
"Jules, I'll see you later."
She looked up from the textbook her nose was currently buried in, confusion spreading across her face as she took in her made up apperance. "You're going out?"
"Unfortunately."
Tossing the jersey over her head her roommates eyes only got larger.
"To a Bruins game none the less?"
"I know, not my idea but I was the idiot who told Fred I would go to a game with him." Her roommate chuckled as she scoffed and headed out towards the front door of the apartment. Turning in her tracks, she yelled back "I'm going out after too, so don't bolt the door!"
"Who are you and what have you done to Liz!"
"That's exactly what my sweatpants asked me!"
She headed downstairs and hopped in the passenger seat of Fred's car. He turned to greet her but chuckled slightly as he started to drive off.
"You better be wearing something better underneath that thing."
"Oh no, I definitely want to wear this HUGE jersey out after."
"Well you know Tyler would love that."
"Exactly what I don't want to have happen."
The two shared a chuckle as they settled in for the remainder of the ride to the garden.

As expected, the Bruins won their game that night and Liz was actually excited to go out from the energy that was pumped into her from the fans during the game. It wasn't that she didn't enjoy hockey, being Canadian it was in her blood, but she never really enjoyed sitting in the arena for three hours. Liz stood with Fred outside of the locker room waiting for the guys to come out when Fred nodded to her, "you might want to take the jersey off before someone gets a big head."
"It can get bigger than it already is?" She smirked while saying this, she was friends with Tyler but it was just too easy to poke fun at him. As she was pulling the jersey over her head, she heard the door to the locker room opening.
"Damn girl, take it off!"
Rolling her eyes as she finished pulling the jersey off and folding it haphazardly, she looked up at the source of the comment.
"They haven't gotten a leash for you yet?" Brad smirked as he made his way over to the two.
"They did, but only you're allowed to use it." He said as he wiggled his eyebrows at her.
"My dream come true." The sarcasm dripped from her comments.
"Segs said you were coming out, but I didn't believe him." He made his way over and gave her a hug. She knew the majority of the team from hanging out with Tyler and Fred, but she had never joined them for post-game festivities.
"Well you know what they say about hell freezing over."
"I thought it was a little colder in here tonight." He replied with a smirk.
She shook her head and turned noticing Fred talking to Tyler as he looked up.
"Holy shit, you did it Fred. You actually got Liz out of the sweat pants and in something hot."
"It took some convincing, but I did good, didn't I?" They both stood staring at her, arms crossed looking her over slowly.
"Uh, okay pervs, that's enough of that. And don't give him all the credit for this," she ran her hands jokingly up and down her sides, "I chose this outfit all by myself."
"Well it was a damn good choice, Liz." Tyler wiggled his eyebrows at her as she smacked his chest rolling her eyes.
"Pervert."

With the company she was in for the evening, Liz was sure of two things: One, she wouldn't have to pay for a single drink and two, there would be a lot of them.
After their third round of shots Tyler, Liz and Fred grabbed some beers and headed back to the section of the bar that was currently being occupied by the rest of the team. As they worked their way through the crowd, Liz waved at a few of the guys she had met before from other team outings and they ended up calling her over for another round of shots. Smacking Fred on the shoulder, he turned around and she nodded in their direction to let him know she was heading that way. He raised his eyebrow at her and in response she shrugged.
"Free booze Freddy, I'm not saying no."
Shaking his head chuckling, he continued to follow Tyler to the back who was on his way to Adam.
"Still turning into a pumpkin at midnight?" he asked as he approached him.
"Haven't found anything yet to keep me here, I see all your ugly mugs every day." He replied with a smirk.
About 10 minutes and another 4 shots later, Liz made her way to the back where Fred and Tyler were still talking to Adam. She recognized his face, but had never met him before. Approaching the group she silently slipped in between Fred and Tyler. Looking down at her, Fred chuckled.
"What's the shot count now sweat pants?"
"In the whole 15 minutes we've been here, I'm up to 7. It's a damn good thing I had 3 brothers to keep up with growing up."
Tyler smirked at her. "You gonna try to out drink hockey players, kid?"
"Watch who you're calling kid, I'm older than you AND I'll drink your baby ass under the table."
While Tyler made a face at her in rebuttal, she turned her attention to the Adam who was chuckling at the scene unfolding in front of him. She smiled and leaned in closer to him. "I'm Liz."
He leaned in to match her, "Adam".
She chuckled, "I know. But it's nice to meet you Adam."
"Care to make that shot count an even 10?"
She smirked at him and narrowed her eyes slightly. "Already trying to get me drunk?"
"Maybe. Or maybe I just want to see you actually drink Segs under the table."
She laughed in response, shaking her head a bit. "Well as long as you're buying."
He moves through the boys to make his way beside Liz before heading in front of her. "Let's go then."

A couple more shots, few more drinks and about an hour later, Liz was definitely feeling the effects of the alcohol as she danced in front of Adam. She leaned back into him to steady herself a bit and looked around to find the boys she came with, spotting them at the table of Bruins she had been at previously. She made eye contact with Fred, winking at him before turning to face Adam. He grabbed her waist as she threw her head back moving to the beat. As she came back up, she put her hands on his chest steadying herself. She took a mental note of how firm it felt under her small hands before looking up at him.
"I'm glad they got me to come out night. You played great tonight by the way."
"You were at the game?"
"Yep. Tyler got the tickets, Fred made me come."
"Well I'm glad he did."
Smirking lightly, she moved her hands up and down his chest slightly before responding, "me too."
Pulling her closer to him, he asked, "How do you know them anyway? I've never seen you out with Segs before."
"I know Fred from school. Just so happens if you're friends with Fred you're automatically friends with Tyler."
He chuckled at her statement and bent down closer to her ear. "I'm glad to hear that's the reason you know him."
She looked up confused before she put two and two together and chuckled. "Nope. Not a notch in his bed post."
"Good."
They finished the rest of the song, but when it ended she slipped out of his grip stating she needed another drink and headed back to the table.
"Well, well, doesn't someone look like they're having fun with a certain defenceman." She heard as she slid in beside Fred.
"Who was it that told me to get out of my sweat pants and have fun?" She questioned before swiping his beer away from him and taking a chug.
Tyler leaned in front of Fred so he could see Liz's face and questioned, "you going home with him tonight?"
"Now what kind of girl do you think I am, Tyler?" She said with a slight smirk on her face.
"The kind that needs to get laid." He quickly rebutted.
She chuckled, finishing off Fred's beer. "Maybe next time." Looking around, she noticed that the crowd was starting to dwindle and looked at her watch finding that it was nearing 1:30 in the morning. "Well boys, I think it's time for me to go home."
Fred, ever the protector, looked at his watch then back at her. "You want me to cab it with you?"
"Nope, stay, have fun." She leaned over, wrapping her arms around his neck hugging him. She waved at Tyler before she headed off towards the doors. On her way out she noticed Adam at the bar with Andrew Ference and she diverted. Coming up behind Adam, Andrew noticed her first and smiled.
"Well if it isn't my favourite baby sitter!" She chuckled, thinking of all the times she had watched his girls.
"Live in the flesh!" She said as Adam turned, smiling at her.
"I thought you ran away."
"From you? Never." She smiled coyly as his turned into a smirk. "But, I am heading home." Before he had the chance to suggest anything she finished with, "See you next time maybe?"
The smile faded from his face slightly, but she wrapped her arms around his neck before he could fully show his disappointment. His lips were right beside her ear as he said, "For you, I'll be here."
She smiled to herself, letting go of him and placing a kiss on his cheek before looking to Andrew waving.
"Have a good night boys."
Andrew watched Adam as his eyes followed Liz until he couldn't see her anymore, and a small smirk settled on his face. When Adam turned back to Andrew he took a sip of his beer, noticing the smirk.
"What?"
"Liz, huh?"
"How is it I'm practically the only one who's never met her?"
"You don't have kids and you don't hang out with Segs that often." Ference replied with a chuckle.
"She babysits for practically everyone when they really need it, and she hangs around with Segs and the boys."
He nodded, finishing the last drink of his beer and setting it down. Andrew noticed the look on his face and shook his head smiling, when Adam looked back at him with a confused look.
"She's got that effect on people, doesn't she Quaider?"
"She's definitely something else."
He nodded, "and she's a great girl. Might be good for you."
Adam's eyes shot to Ference, "what, no, I-"
Andrew chuckled as he stood up, planning to head back to the back with the rest of the boys. "Sure there bud, whatever you say. But like I said, the effect is hard to forget."

Notes

So some facts might not be correct here and there, but I tried my best!
Let me know what you think!

You aren't a horrible person!! Life happens, and it's okay to have taken a break. But now, if you're back, I'm so happy for updates to start coming back!!
I think that in a traditional sense, an engagement/wedding/etc. would come next. That's always an option to explore for Adam and Liz. If not, maybe just some good old-fashioned drama (car accident? hockey collision? sick baby?? ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES)
Honestly, I'll be happy to read anything about the McQuaids at this point. Just take your time and things ideas may come! :) :) :)
