24 Hours with You

Chapter 1

It was a beautfiul day in Pittsburgh. The sun was shining and reflecting off the water, the trees were full of healthy green leaves and the flowers were in full bloom. I decided I needed a break from unpacking boxes in my new place, so I left the apartment building and went for a walk to explore the neighbourhood. I wasn't out the door 10 minutes and my phone started ringing. Sometimes I wonder why I bought such a big purse because it would take me way too long to find anything I was looking for. I was digging around in that thing for atleast 20 seconds before I could find the stupid phone and I picked up just before the answering machine cut in.

"Hey Cassie! What's up?" It was my best friend Nicki. We had known each other since we were 3 and she was always there for me, through thick and thin. We never went a day without talking so I wasn't surprised to hear her perky voice on the other end.

"I'm outside walking around my new neighbourhood since it's so nice out. Wh..." And as per usual she jumped right to the point. She never really was one for small talk. "I have two extra tickets to tonights game against the Flyers. You and your beau Michael wanna come?"

Michael and I had been together for 2 years. He was good to me. He surprised me with little things that he knew I loved, he took me to amazing restaurants that I was sure he couldn't afford and he would comfort me and be there for me whenever I needed him. He did all that and more just to make me happy and I would do all the same for him.

"Yeah sounds good. When's puck drop?"

"7:30, meet at 6:30?"

"Okay I'll let Michael know. See you there!"

To: Michael
Nicki has 2 extra tickets for the Pens game, meet at 6:30.

Not a minute later I got his reply.

From: Michael
Sweet! See you there babe.

I looked at the screen of my phone to see what time it was. 5:30. I started running back to my apartment when I turned a corner and..

Oh shit.

I steam rolled right through a guy wearing an expensive suit and now a tray full of coffees too. How much more clumsy could I get.

"I am soooo sorry! I hope it's not ruined. I can pay for a new one. Hold on I'll get some money." Just as I reached my hand down into my purse he grabbed my arm to stop me. When I looked up, it was James Neal.

"It's okay I have a ton of suits at home. Are you okay? Did you get burned?

"Uhhhhh..." I looked at my arms and there were no red marks so I figured he got hit with most of the coffee. "No. No I think I'm fine, don't worry about me." We stood there awkwardly for a minute, neither of us knowing what to say. "Well I should get going good luck tonight, bye!" I rushed out and ran off again. I can't believe I just did that. I spilled James Neal's coffee all over him like an idiot. He must have thought I was such a klutz ... though he wouldn't have been wrong because I really am, but that's definitely not the point. I didn't want a gorgeous hockey player thinking I would be a hazard to be around. But then again, why should I have cared? I had a boyfriend and it's not like I'd see him again anyways.

After that little fiasco I ended up getting to my apartment at 5:50 which didn't leave me very much time. I raced through my apartment and straight to the bathroom to grab a quick shower and do my hair. When I got out I did my makeup just the way I liked it, barely
noticeable but still there. I continued into my room where I slipped into my jeans, hauled my Malkin shirsey over my head and I grabbed my turquoise sweater on the way out.

It took me 5 minutes to find my keys in that huge ass purse that I loved to hate. I made a mental note to get a new small one ASAP. As soon as I got them I ran down the five flights of stairs to the parking garage reserved for the building residents to find my precious light yellow Volkswagen 181.

"3-2 baby! What a game!" I yelled as we all walked out of the Consol Energy Centre together. It was an amazing game with goals from Dupuis and Bennett in the last 5 minutes of the third period to tie the game, then an amazing backhand top-shelf goal came from Neal to win it in OT.

It was fun being there with Nicki and Michael but the first couple of minutes I was there, they were both being quiet and reserved, which was really unlike them. They were usually the loudest of our friends, always excited and really fun to be around.

They were back to normal after a little while so I just chose to ignore it.

When Michael suggested we go to Diesel to celebrate the win, I was apprehensive. I wasn't really a big drinker or a good dancer but I was afraid that if I didn't go, some random girl would be dancing all over him and that was the deal breaker. He didn't really have much self control and that was one of the problems we had in our relationship, so I knew it would be best if I went and at least tried to have a little fun. Once I had my internal debate sorted out, we decided to meet there in 20 minutes and with that we went our separate ways.

Halfway to my car, I realized that I left my sweater in the arena so I went back to the entrance I just left and I heard them talking.

"She's going to find out." I could hear Nicki first, then I heard Michael.

"No, she won't. We've been doing this for a year now and she still hasn't figured it out." I couldn't believe what I was hearing. They surely didn't mean what it sounded like...right? Then I saw them. Michael pulled her in tight to his body and kissed her with all he had, he never kissed me that way before. Apparently I was worrying about the wrong thing. I didn't
need to worry about a random girl trying to get with Michael, I had to worry about my best friend doing it.

I decided I'd seen enough and I ran as fast as I could in the opposite direction. My boyfriend of two years was cheating on me for half of our relationship and I had nobody to comfort me and tell me it would be okay when I really needed it, because that girl was also the "other girl" and that's what hurt the most.

I kept running, tears blurred my vision but I didn't care. I had to get away from what I saw. When I turned around a corner of the building, I tripped on something and got thrown harshly to the ground. Then everything went black.
