24 Hours with You

Chapter 5

We got back to my apartment around 3:00 after our day out with James' stuff and his new Dory key. Yes as in Dory from Finding Nemo. He saw it there and he just had to have it. Apparently it's his favourite animated movie ever... the more you know.

We came in and just relaxed on the couch for a bit watching TV while I kept my arm elevated on the armrest and had some ice wrapped around it.

I thought I could torture him by putting on one of my favourite shows, The Bachelorette. Was I ever wrong. He got so into it and I couldn't control my laughter. He was yelling at the TV screen trying to get through to the girl and tell her who to pick.

"NO! HE'S AN ASSHOLE DON'T PICK HIM!" He screamed as he helplessly watched her pick the guy he didn't want her to.

"She'll regret ignoring me when they're divorced in a year!" He said sassily as he got up off the couch to grab us some chips.

"What's so bad about him? Maybe they'll be together for the rest of their lives." I said, mostly because I wanted to hear his argument.

"He was more interested in looking at his own reflection in his wine glass than talking to her.
The guy's a douche." He said matter of factly as he walked back in with our snack.

"Okay Mr. Observant. What do you want to watch now?" I asked, scrolling through the channels wondering if he had an obsession with any other girly shows.

"Go back! Go back! Wipeout's on! That's always good for a few laughs." He said so I went back down on the screen to click the channel Wipeout was on. We watched that while we relaxed on the couch for another hour.

Once we were done watching tv we decided on having Kraft Mac and Cheese for supper so we went to the kitchen to get it started. Since James didn't even know how to cook that, he got his first cooking lesson. Luckily it was an easy meal to get ready so I didn't really need two hands but I did ask him for a bit of help every now and then. Once it was almost ready he started to set the table before I'd even asked him to. He told me that his mom used to make him do it growing up so it was a habit now.

We were sat down at the table shortly after when we both realized that me eating was going to be a problem again. He told me to pull my chair over next to him so he could help more easily. Instead of him putting the food on the fork for me like he did at the restaurant earlier that day, he put his hand over mine on the fork to help me gain more control of what I was doing. He stopped helping after a few times and said that I'd need to be able to do it by myself eventually and learning sooner was better than later. After a few failed attempts I was starting to get the hang of it, maybe it wasn't so hard after all.

We ate in a comfortable silence just enjoying the food.

When we were done, we pushed back our chairs and went to the sink so we could do the dishes. The only way we could think of that would possibly work for me was if we put one dish in the sink at a time and I scrubbed it as best as I could under the water. Once I scrubbed it I'd haul it out of the water for inspection and if it passed I'd hand it over to James to dry.

Our plan worked pretty well, except for a few splashes of water here and there when I'd drop a slippery dish, and we were done in 5 minutes. After everything was cleared up we went to our separate rooms to change out of our slightly wet clothes and into comfier ones.

When I entered the living room James was already out of his room and resting on the couch. I noticed he had something in his hands so I looked closer to see what it was. It turned out to be an IPod dock.

"Why do you have that?" I asked pointing at the dock resting in his hands.

"WE Cassie, are going to have a dance party." He said looking excited.

"I'm not much of a dancer" I said shyly as I sat down next to him.

"You can't be that bad and it's better than sitting here all night staring at the TV isn't it?" He stood up to plug the dock in and laid it down on the coffee table next to the couch.

"I don't really have a choice do I?"

"That would be a no." Then he held out his hand for me to take.

"Where did you even get the idea?" I asked curiously. I took his hand and he pulled me up off the couch.

"Umm... I just saw the dock at my house and I don't use it much so I thought why not." He said shrugging his shoulders.

"Let's get this party started!" He said as he came back from his room where he went to get his his IPhone. He realized he left it in his pants pocket that he just changed out of and we kind of needed it to play the music so he quickly ran in to get it.

We danced and danced, just acting like fools. We didn't care how silly we looked, it wasn't to show off for anyone, it was just to have some fun with a friend. James wasn't actually that bad of a dancer when he was trying but he liked doing the "grocery shopper" and the "dog walker" which were pretty hilarious to watch but weren't very good.

His playlist was surprisingly good and we could dance to almost every song but even if we couldn't we still tried. We were jamming out to Radioactive by Imagine Dragons when we both got a bit tired and decided we needed some water. While we took our break I figured it would be a good idea to take some of my painkillers because the last time I had taken them was that morning. I wasn't sure if dancing would be considered bad for my arm but I made sure I was being careful about it. I didn't move my right arm at all, I just left it down by my side. It probably looked pretty funny but I didn't care, I was having fun.

While we were in the kitchen we heard the Macarena come on and he nearly jumped out of his skin with excitement.

"Come on Cass let's do it!" He said animatedly like a kid on Christmas.

"I can't, it's all arms." I said and we both frowned. "Perform it for me!" I said and he became the little 5 year old again full of excitement.

I went back out to the living room and sat down on the couch waiting for James to come out and do the dance. When he did, he stood right in front of me with a huge smile on his face.

We were both having fun and laughing while he was doing it. My favourite part was when he was turned around to face the tv and his his butt was in front of me. Damn that boy had a nice ass, how did I not notice that before? It was almost as if he was reading my mind because just as I thought that he started shaking it and I nearly died from laughter.

I loved how he didn't mind being himself around me, most guys I know would never get up and dance the Macarena by themselves just for a little fun. Hell, they wouldn't even have that song on their phone.

James kept going until the song stopped and he took a breather. Then, the song changed to one of my favourites. It was Yellow by Coldplay.

"Never have I ever slow danced with someone." I said to him as he sat down. The song made me think of it and I figured I'd catch him again and maybe I could win our little game.

"Damnit! That's another one. Is this going to be a thing now?" He asked

"What? Blurting out random Never have I ever's?" He nodded.

"If it helps me win." I said grinning.

We sat there just listening to the song for a few seconds, it was kind of awkward and I had no clue what to do. Thoughts ran through my head. Should I go to the kitchen? No that would be stupid I just got a drink. Should I change the song? No definitely not, I loved it too much. Should I... James interrupted my thoughts.

"Come here." He said as he stood up and held his arms open for me. I went to him without hesitation.

We danced with my head on his chest and my good arm wrapped around him, and the other one down. It was kind of weird, but nice.

"I love this song" I stated.

"It's my new favourite." He said and I looked up at him questioningly but all I got was a small smile.

We kept dancing and I found myself singing along with Chris Martin's amazing voice.

"I drew a line, I drew a line for you, Oh what a thing to do," I sang.

"And it was all yellow." James sang that line with me and once he started, he didn't stop. He sang the rest of the song with me while we danced. It was a really fun night and I couldn't help but feel little butterflies in my stomach when I looked up at him. Oh shit. I just got out of a relationship, all I needed was some stupid crush on a heartbreakingly beautiful hockey player that I barely knew.

Once the song was over we both declared that we were tired and retreated to our separate rooms for the night.

I flopped down on my queen-sized bed and curled up underneath the covers hoping for sleep to come quickly. Unfortunately, that night was another night that I didn't think I'd be getting a whole lot of sleep. So much happened in just one day. Was Michael going to stay away from me? I hoped so because it was hard enough seeing him that day, I definitely could have waited a bit longer to see him again.

Nicki.. where did we stand? Did Michael tell her that I knew about their little affair? This was the first day since we'd been friends that we hadn't talked to each other so I knew she had to know something, but I wasn't sure how much. Hopefully Michael filled her in enough so that she'd stay away from me because I didn't want to see her either. They had already ruined my week enough, they didn't need to piss me off any more by showing up at my house uninvited.

Finally, did I really like James? I'd known the guy for a day, that was silly. Of course I didn't have feelings for him, I was still upset from the break up so I was trying to push myself to have feelings for him to help me forget about Michael. That had to be it...right?

I rolled over onto my side and started counting sheep to try and help me doze off. It worked because I woke up the next day feeling rested and ready to see what the day would bring me.

I rolled out of bed and put on my glasses, I hadn't worn my contacts since I fell because I found it impossible to put them in with my left hand.

I slipped into my cute little white bunny slippers and went to the kitchen to see if James was awake yet. When I got there all I saw was a note on the fridge in his scribbly writing.

Cass,
Sorry I forgot to tell you I had morning practice today. I'm
getting Pauly to pick me up so I can bring your car back, I
hope you don't need your keys. Since I have no idea what
your car looks like, I'm hoping that it makes a lot of noise
when I hit the alarm button on the keys.

P.S. Don't try to cook anything by yourself, I don't want to come
back to see your apartment burning down. I'll help you make
something as soon as practice is over.

-James

I smiled at his note and couldn't wait to hear about all the shit the guys would give him for the car. I wondered how he'd explain it to them, that would be an interesting story to tell.

I figured he'd be back some time around 11. It was 9:30 then so I decided to lay around and watch tv until he came back.
