Just a Little Longer

Chapter 18

Patrick had tried to call her two more times the night before. He was worried that he’d done something to make her angry. He knew he could trust her, but he’d wanted to talk to her about how her day had been, if she’d seen the game and stuff like that. Now that they had just landed in Chicago again, he tried to call her for the third time that day. Jonathan had tried it as well, but no answer.
“She should be home by now, but she doesn’t even answer that phone.” Patrick shoved his phone back in his pocket. This was ridiculous. He wanted to see her, make sure that she was okay, but apparently she didn’t want to talk to him.
“Calm down,” Jonathan said, putting a hand on his friend’s shoulder. “I’ll pay her a visit. If she really is angry with you for some reason, it might be better for you to just go home. I’ll see what’s up with her and let you know, okay?”
Jonathan was worried as well. It wasn’t like her to not answer her phone or at least call back. And that she hadn’t even answered his phone call made him even more worried, but he didn’t show that to Patrick.
“Okay,” Patrick reluctantly nodded his head. Jonathan was her best friend after all, and he could count on him. He’d just have to wait a little longer to see her.

Haley had gotten up extremely early to pack her belongings and interview the people she’d wanted to talk to. Needless to say, she’d hardly slept at all after that evening. Without seeing Duncan or talking to him, she got on the first train back to Chicago. Since then she’d locked herself in her apartment and tried to get some rest. But she had no success. She just lay on her sofa staring at the TV, ignoring the phone calls from Patrick, Jonathan and her boss. The three people she’d have to tell about this, but didn’t know how to.
She was on her fifth episode of “Drop Dead Diva” when there was a knock on her apartment door. She jumped up, her heart racing. She paused the show and took a deep breath, before she walked to the door. If it was Duncan, she would call the police straight away.
“Who is it?” she asked with a weak voice and held on to the doorknob to keep her hands from trembling so much.
“It’s Jon, open up Hales.”
Great, one of the people she didn’t want to see, but she knew that Jonathan wouldn’t give up. He’d tear the door down of he had to. With a sigh Haley opened the door for him, turned around and walked to the sofa to sit down again. This wouldn’t be easy no matter how she did it, so she could just as well sit down.
“Why the hell aren’t you answering your phone?” Jonathan shut the door and took of his jacket. When he turned around and saw her on the sofa, her hands lying limply in her lap and her face ashen, he changed his tone. “What happened, Haley?”
“Nothing.” She knew that she had to talk to him, tell him what had happened, but she didn’t know how to start. Denying that something had happened wasn’t the right way, she knew that, but it was just so damn difficult for her.
“Don’t lie to me.” Jonathan sat down next to her. “You’re pale, your hands are trembling and you look like you haven’t eaten anything today. Am I right?”
“Yes,” Haley whispered, staring at her hands, trying to keep them still.
“Then I’ll make you something to eat and after that we’ll talk.”
“I can’t eat anything.” Haley looked up at him, tears brimming in her eyes. “I tried, but couldn’t get anything down.”
Now Jonathan worried even more. She looked just like the little girl he’d grown up with, who came to him when she’d argued with her father. But this look on her face… She’d never before looked that scared in her life.
“Haley, you know you can tell me what happened.” Jonathan reached out to put his arm around her, and that was when the tears started falling. Without thinking about it, he pulled her close and held her in his arms.
Haley held on to his shirt and tried to take deep breaths, but it wasn’t so easy. When she finally calmed down, she was able to breathe normally again. She raised her head and brushed the tears away.
“You‘re scaring me. I’m imagining the worst right now, so you should just tell me what has you crying like this.” He pushed back her hair and took one of her hands in his. He knew that she’d open up to him sooner or later, but he wanted her to do it now. Having to wait would only make the knot in his stomach grow more and more.
Haley let go of his hands and took a deep breath, before she started: “Duncan came to my room last night. I thought he wanted to tell me something work-related, but he didn’t. He told me that he’d be better for me than Patrick and then he kissed me.” Haley took another deep breath. Her hands started shaking again, but she calmed down as soon as Jonathan put his hands over hers. “I pushed him away and he told me that I wanted it to. I – I pushed my hand against his nose and kicked him in the balls and then I closed the door. It’s just so… I’m…”
“Shh, it’s okay.” Jonathan pulled her into his arms again. It was everything but okay, but he had to calm her down again first. And he had to calm down himself. He wanted to strangle that guy. And he understood why Haley hadn’t answered her phone. Someone had to tell Patrick, and he could imagine how that would go down.
“I don’t know what to do.” Haley broke the silence and raised her head again. It was nice to be held by Jonathan after the previous day. He made her feel protected. She had the same feeling, when Patrick did that. “Oh God, Patrick…”
“I’ll talk to him. And I’ll talk to your boss, if you want to.”
“I don’t know if that’s such a good idea.”
“You have to tell both of them. And it was hard enough for you to tell me. And your boss needs to know.”
“You’re right.”
“Can I leave you alone? Because I’d like to go straight away.”
“I’ll be fine.” Haley tried to smile, but he saw right through her. She shouldn’t be alone right now.
“I’ll tell April to come over.”
“You really don’t-“
“Haley, stop trying to tell me you’re okay, when you’re really not.”
Haley stared at him for a moment, before she sighed: “Thank you.”

On his way to Patrick’s apartment, Jonathan called April, explained the situation to her and sent her on her way. He knew that she’d take great care of Haley, distract her with a movie or girlie-talk. Something that would be good for Haley.
“What happened?” Patrick stared at Jonathan, as soon as he’d opened the door. Jonathan looked angry. Angrier than he’d ever seen him. This couldn’t be good.
“You should probably sit down, Pat.”
“I think you should just tell me, what the hell is going on.”
“Sit down!” Jonathan barked, and Patrick did what he was told. Once they were seated, Jonathan told him what had happened, what Haley had told him.
“That little shit.” Patrick got up right after Jonathan was finished. “I’m going to rip him apart.”
“No you’re not. We’re going to the paper together now and we’ll talk to her boss. You won’t lay a finger on that guy. I can understand what you’re feeling, hell, I feel the same way, but he’s not worth all the trouble you’re going to get with the coaches and stuff, you hear me?”
Jonathan was right, of course, but that didn’t change the fact that Patrick wanted to rip that guy another asshole. He’d have to behave.
The drive to the office seemed like forever, but the boss let them in immediately. Jonathan told him the same thing he’d told Patrick before. And he was shocked. Apparently there had been an incident about two years ago, where an employee had accused Duncan of sexual harassment. They’d taken it seriously, but nobody had seen or heard anything, and the girl had been new. They’d even asked the police to investigate, but Duncan had been able to convince everyone that nothing had happened. They’d checked the camera tapes again and again. He hadn’t trusted Duncan that much, but he couldn’t fire him without a valid reason. And since then Duncan had been the perfect employee.
“I’ll get the police involved and send him home straight away.” They all got up together.
Jonathan was relieved that he believed them and that he’d do something. Duncan would get what he deserved. But nobody had prepared him for the feelings of anger that came back when he saw the guy. His nose was swollen from the hit Haley had landed on him.
“Duncan, I have to send you home right now. And I’ll call the police. You probably know what this is about, so I’d appreciate it if you went home quietly. This is for your own good.”
Duncan stood up from his chair and looked past his boss at Patrick and Jonathan.
“I wonder what lies she told you. She wanted me to fuck her, because you’re not good enough for her.” He sneered at Patrick and crossed his arms.
Before Patrick could say or do anything, Jonathan punched the guy in the face, making him tumble to the ground and groan in agony. At least it wouldn’t be Patrick they’d talk about in the newspapers again.
“You should keep your mouth shut! You were the one who tried to force himself on Haley. I hope you rot in hell.” Jonathan turned towards the man who’d taken them there. “I’m sorry for the mess.”
“No, it’s okay. You had every right to do that.”
“Come on, let’s go, Pat.”
Shocked about Jonathan’s behavior, but also more than happy, he turned around and left the building with his friend. Now he wanted to see Haley even more, hold her in his arms and tell her that everything would be okay again.
