Wrecking Ball

All I wanted was to break your walls; all you ever did was wreck me.

She stood at the top of the stairs watching him as he started to move all of his bags to the front door. Trying her hardest not to cry she wrapped her arms around her waist, hugging herself tight and reminding herself that he didn't deserve her tears. She was so wrapped up in her own head that she didn't notice him stop at the bottom of the stairs looking up at her. When he finally came into her field of vision, she stared at him taking him in one last time. There was no question she was in love with him, but she couldn't turn a blind eye to what she knew was happening anymore. She knew his reputation, she knew the rumours she heard from the rest of the team and the other girls, but she refused to believe that the same guy she was hearing stories about was the same guy that would spend an entire saturday in bed with her watching America's Funniest Home Video's giggling like teenagers. She felt the tears starting to pool in her eyes and turned around walking back to their, now her, room.
"Ally." She heard him call her from the bottom of the stairs.
Ignoring him she closed the door and collapsed onto the end of the bed letting out a single silent sob before trying to compose herself again. Looking around the room was no help to try and calm her, she only saw memories they had built over the past year and a half. Pictures of them lined the walls, souvenirs from different cities he played in sitting on shelves around the room. She walked over to the bookshelf and grabbed the small polar bear statue that he got her when they played in Vancouver. Running her fingers over the smooth surface she felt the tears starting again, this time getting angry with herself as the memories of the day she saw the pictures of him kissing another girl flooded her head. Without thinking she launched the small statue at the wall and watched it as it shattered into pieces. Less than a second later she heard his heavy footsteps quickly coming up the wooden stairs and soon he was on the other side knocking.
"Ally, are you okay?"
She heard the wiggle of the doorknob as he tried to enter, but she had locked it.
"Come on baby."
When she didn't answer him or open the door he pounded his fist on it.
"Damn it, Ally! Open the fucking door!"
She couldn't stop the tears from coming this time, she sunk to the foot of the bed letting the sobs over take her as she hung her head in defeat. On the other side of the door he heard her hard sobs and all he wanted to do was hold her again and tell her it was all going to be alright, but he knew better than that. He had screwed up one too many times, he wasn't going to get forgiven this time. He turned around leaning his back up against the door when his eyes landed on a picture of them on their one year anniversary in the middle of the ice at TD Garden. The memories of that day flooded back to him and suddenly he had a new jolt of life, he wasn't going to give up this easily. Turning back to the door he knocked again.
"Open the door, please."
Not hearing anything but the sobs that continued to come from her, he spoke again.
"Can't we even try to fix this Ally? What we had was good, you can't tell me that you can just walk away from it."
Silence again came from the other side of the door until suddenly it swung open and he was face to face with her. He looked at her, tears rolling down her face, eyes red and puffy but full of fire.
"I'm just walking away from this, Brad? Because last time I checked you were the one that just gave up on us."
He reached out for her but she pulled away from him.
"Don't."
"I didn't give up on us baby, I love you!"
"You love me?" She said incredulously.
"Of course I do." His voice had softened.
"Well you know, you have a pretty funny way of showing me you love me. Your tongue down another girls throat isn't the way to do it."
"It was one time-" She cut him off.
"Bull fucking shit it was Brad! I tried to ignore what they were telling me for so long because I love you, you're the best and worst thing that ever happened to me. I can't live this lie anymore, I love you so much and that's never going to change and I'm not sorry for one minute that we were together, but you destroyed me."
He stood there watching her confession speechless. He wanted nothing more than to hold her in his arms and wipe away her tears, but he knew that would never happen again.
She let out a sob and looked down at the floor, "I loved you so much, why wasn't that good enough for you?"
He had no idea how to answer that question, so he stayed silent. She was the best thing that had ever happened to him, and he knew it, but for some reason he was still being the same idiot he always had been.
When there was no response from him, she chuckled quietly and sardonically and looked up at him.
"You should go."
He stared at her for a second, taking her in for the last time. He looked her in the eye and let out the breathe he was holding as he quietly said, "I'm sorry."
There was no emotion on her face as he spoke the words, she just stared back at him with swollen eyes and tear stained cheeks.
"Me too."
Nodding silently, he turned walking back down the stairs. When he reached the bottom he realized that she had followed him down, he went and picked up his bags and opened the door looking back at her, he struggled to find something to say to her but everything that had been said that night left him with nothing else to say. She broke the eye contact they held by looking at the floor and crossing her arms.
"Send one of the guys by for the rest of your stuff."
He nodded, but didn't speak still feeling defeated. The love of his life stood in front of him but she wasn't his anymore, all because he was too stupid to hold onto her. The look on her face said it all, he really had destroyed her, she wasn't the same girl he knew before and he was the cause of that. Turning to walk out the door he realized that this was the best thing, he loved her and he had to let her go. He heard her footsteps on the wood floors approaching the door, but when he turned his head he saw her hand on the door waiting for him to leave so she could close it behind him. Walking to his car he put the bags in the back and got in looking at her standing in the door once more. There was once a time that was his favourite sight, her waiting in the door for him to come home, or her waving to him as he left, but this was the hardest thing he had to do. Drive away from her for the last time knowing she wouldn't be in the next door waiting for him. Starting the car and putting it in reverse he slowly pulled out the driveway.
Ally stood in the doorway of the house watching him get in the car, she noticed him looking at her from the drivers seat and it took all she had not to run out there and tell him to stay. She couldn't do this to herself anymore, she couldn't lie and tell herself she was fine and that everything would be okay. She knew that he was never going to fully change, maybe he had gotten better but he was never going to be what she wanted him to be. As he started to pull out of the driveway the tears started falling again and she was happy that he couldn't see. As he drove past the house she watched him until he got to the end of the street and then she closed the door. She turned her back to it and let a sob escape her lips as her legs gave out and she slid down the door landing on the floor. She watched the love of her life drive away from her and the last thought that went through her head before she gave into her tears was the thought she had been thinking since he started packing earlier that day.
You wrecked me.
