Prologue

His arms were wrapped around her for the last time. Her bare back was pressed against his chest and her hands clutched his arm that was wrapped around her stomach. She was still sleeping as he untangled their bodies and fought the urge to never leave. After putting all of his clothes back on, he looked at her for the last time. He tried to put the scene into his head forever. She was in her most vulnerable, beautiful state.

Her long blonde hair that he loved so much was fanned over the pillow and her perfect, pink lips were parted slightly. She was laying on her side, the blanket halfway down her body. Giving into the temptation, he traced the infinity symbol tattoo on her shoulder blade. He was there when she got it and held her hand during what she thought was ‘the worst pain of her life.’ She turned in her sleep to face him and one of her arms landed only inches from his. He kissed her palm lightly and pushed the little pieces of hair off her delicate face.

Finally he managed to pull himself away from the only person he truly loved. With a final kiss to the side of her head, he walked silently out the door of her bedroom and her apartment. The cold morning air hit him hard, but he was in his car in seconds. The only thing harder than leaving her bed, was driving away from the only normal life he ever had. He chose to close his mind off as he drove the 45 minutes to the airport and refused to think of her as he checked his bags in and went through security.

If he thought of her warm vanilla scent or the soft feel of her cheeks against his palm, he would be back in his car and on his way back to her. The memories of them staying up into the wee hours of the morning, laughing over nothing and attempting to be romantic were enough to make his eyes tear up. Quickly, he shook his head and tried to keep her out of his mind. She needed him to leave, no matter how hard it was for both of them.

The flight attendant called for his flight and within minutes he was sitting on the runway in first class. The plane took off soon after and his heart cracked as his one summer of true freedom and love became a distant memory. The face he thought he burned into the back of his eyes became blurry.

Leaving her was the hardest thing Evgeni Malkin ever had to do.
