Captains Come First
Chapter 43
Heather sat entered the breakfast room with a huff dropping her large black Prada bag on a chair beside her and not so gracefully plopping into the small padded chair. "Explain yourself" she said folding her arms across her chest sunglasses on her face hiding her eyes which were red and swollen. She didn't want to show the tears that she was hiding to James.
"Good morning to you too" James said in a slightly annoyed tone. He had rehearsed back and forth all night what he had planned to say. He didn't expect this apprehensive reaction. "Look." He said folding his hands on the table averting his gaze to the coffee cup in front of him. "I want to make things right with you."
"Oh so you think that the best way to do this is to bring another girl around while I'm this pregnant?" She asked with an annoyed laugh. "That's real cute James."
"Listen I didn't plan it this way. Mel and I just..."
"She just fell into your pants out of the sky right?" Heather said laughing.
"Heather I don't want our babies born with parents constantly at each other's throats." James said. "Can you tone it down a little?" He said lowering his voice as he saw that some of his fellow teammates were entering the room. "Look I'm just trying to make things right."
"James" sighed as she pulled out a legal folder from her purse and dropped it in front of him. "Here"
"What's this?" He asked as he gingerly opened it.
"It's an adoption plan and a release." She said. "It releases us of our parental rights allowing somebody more capable to raise the babies. My lawyer prepared it last week."
"So you're just going to do this without me?" James asked confused.
"No. You have rights. There's a release for you to sign otherwise I can't do this." Heather said with a lump in her throat.
"How could you do this?" James asked her. "Did you even think of discussing this with me before hand?"
"It's my body James."
"And my children." James said slamming it shut. "Look Heather, I understand that you may not feel capable given.."
"Given what James?" Heather snapped back standing up leaning over the table. "Given that I was your and other men's whore for a living?"
"I never said that." James said standing up meeting her level.
"Then given what?" "I was going to say given the fact that I love you and you obviously still love me." James said quietly
"I don't love you." Heather said with another annoyed laugh.
"Sure you don't." James said trying to meet her gaze through her dark sunglasses. "When you can look me in the eye I'll believe it." He whispered to her as he opened up the paperwork and tore up the consent. "If you don't want them I will raise them myself." He walked away handing her the shredded paper. Kris had been watching the whole exchange from across the room as somewhat of a bodyguard. He sat down in the seat that James had occupied.
"Mon chere ..." He started "truth or make you feel better?" He asked her.
"Truth...always" heather said between sobs.
"That was...kind of w bitch move." He said placing a hand on hers. "Is it what you actually want or are you just trying to hurt him?"
"I...I don't know." Heather said shaking her head.
"I think that you do know." Kris said in a low knowing tone.
"No." Said heather sobbing. "I don't know why I even came here in the first place." She got up and left the room angrily.
-- It had been two weeks since James had last seen Heather. Heather sat in her doctors office awaiting the results of her latest sonogram. She waited patiently as she heard the door open. "Nice to see you again Heather how have you been feeling?"
"Better Doctor Kale." She said with a small smile. "So any news for me?"
"Actually yes." The doctor said with a smile. "It turns out that we were a little bit off on dates and measurements for how old the babies are."
"How off?" Heather asked confused. "A few days?"
"Weeks is more like it." "You're currently 16 weeke, not 19 like we expected."
"But...no it's not possible." Heather said shaking her head. "No no no." She said tears coming to her eyes as she got up to leave.
"The measurements may be off." The doctor said stopping her. "We will reexamine in a week." Heather nodded and left the office. She pulled out her phone and dialled frantically.
"Hey Sid...we need to talk."
