Ground Rules

The ride to his apartment was actually faster than I had anticipated. Since it was rush hour I thought we would have gotten caught in traffic. Then again, Patrick has always been a fast driver, so that probably helped cut 15 minutes off our time.

“Welcome to mi casa. Mi casa es su casa.” He brought my heavy suitcase in and put it into the room that would be mine for the next two months. It was a good sized room with a neatly made bed and plenty of room.

“Nice place you got here.” I said surveying the huge apartment. He had clearly hired a maid before I got here, because there was no way he could keep this clean on his own.

“Thanks. It’s not much, but its home for most of the year. I’ll start making dinner, you can get unpacked, and I'll let you know when dinner is ready!”

“Since when do you cook? I thought you could burn water.” I said with a smirk.

“Since I realized I’m a lonely bachelor.” He fake pouted. That was hardly true, he had a reputation for being quite the ladies' man, even in middle school.

“Yeah ‘lonely bachelor’ huh? The minute I walked in here it smelled like at least 5 different women have been here!” I exclaimed.

He shrugged and said, “I really do want to settle down with the right girl. And when I find her, I won’t ever let her go!” He said, playfully wrapping me in a strong bear hug.

“Oh so you’re gonna kidnap her? Is that the only way you can get a girl?” I teased, trying to get out of his strong grip.

“If that’s what it takes, and trust me, the ladies still fall head over heels for me.” He joked, letting go of me, “now the bathroom is across the hall and my room is down the hall. If you need anything let me know.”

“Okay.” I sat down and opened my suitcase. I changed into some sweatpants and a t- shirt, and put my long dirty blonde hair in a messy bun. I put the rest of my clothes into the empty dresser in my room. I took out all my makeup, hair stuff, and toiletries and shoved it into the tiny drawers in the bathroom. Just as Patrick yelled that dinner was ready, I put my suitcase in the closet. As soon as I smelled what he had made for “dinner” I rolled my eyes. He had just boiled some Ramen and put it onto plates. I guess I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up.

“Nice dinner you got here. I thought you were a cook now!” I teased with a smirk.

“I know, but I haven’t made it to the grocery store lately, so this is all I have. What do you want to drink?”

“Water is fine.”

Water is fine.” He mocked.

“Fine. I will have a Dr. Pepper.” I said, rolling my eyes. He could be so immature sometimes.

“All out of it. All I have is water and beer.”

“Then why did you ask me what I wanted? I will still just have water.”

“Alright, alright. I’ll get you your dang water. Anything else?”

“Nope! Now let’s eat, I’m starving. The airline food wasn't filling at all.” Throughout dinner we just caught up on recent things going on and what we had missed. Then he brought up the ground rules.

“1. No bringing random guys here. 2. No being moody. 3. Don’t drink all my beer.”

“Why not? And I’m not moody, and I won’t drink ALL of it.” I replied.

“Because. And okay.”

“Now I get to set my own ground rules for you.” I told him.

“Well this is kind of my house, so no.” He joked, trying to keep a serious expression on his face.

“Just hear me out. 1. No trying to make me have sex with you.” I stated. He froze mid bite and stared at me.

“Wow, really Peyt? That was one time, okay?!? I have tried to apologize for years. I thought we had moved past this.” He said, clearly annoyed.

“I didn’t mean it like that, I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page.” I tried to cover, but I knew I screwed up big.

“Yeah, whatever.” He said. I could see the pain in his eyes. He shoved the last bit of his dinner into his mouth, put his plate into the sink and went straight to his room, slamming the door behind him. I pushed my plate out of the way and put my head down on the table. I can’t believe I had just said that. I didn’t want to bring it up. It was the biggest problem we ever had in our friendship.
