Game Time

“Mikayla?”

“Oh, hey, Kat! W'sup?” Mikayla asked when she opened her door.

“Wanna go do something?” I asked, giving her a smile.

“Yea, sure! Just let me grab my phone!” She ran to the kitchen table, grabbed her phone, and headed out the door. “Where to?”

“I was thinking about grabbing a bite to eat.” I said, following Mikayla's lead down the hall towards the elevator.

“Sounds good, I know a great place!” She exclaimed. She pushed the elevator button and we got in when it arrived.

I've been living in Chicago for about a week or so now, and Mikayla and I have grown to be fast friends. Since I've moved in, she's been at my house everyday, helping me unpack and stuff, getting to know each other. She's even gotten me a job at the bookstore she works at, which I've needed desperately, as I'm getting low on money.

Mikayla and I walked for about 10 minutes until we reached a familiar part of town.

“Really? This is your 'great place'?” I asked Mikayla as we reached our destination.

“Yes! What's so wrong with Subway?” She asked, laughing and opening the door.

“Nothing.” I sighed.

“What's wrong?”

“This is where I met Patrick.” I smiled.

“Awe!” Mikayla exclaimed delightfully.

“Yep, right there.” I pointed to the now occupied booth I was sitting at that day. “I sat there, and he and his friend... oh what's his name... something starting with a J... anyways, he and Pat were here ordering. I looked at them, and Patrick came over and tried hitting on me in a way. Then the three of us went for a walk and yea!”

“Oh my god, Kat, that's so cute!”

We ordered our subs, and sat down at a booth beside a window. I looked out the window, and took in the view. Fall had hit Chicago beautifully. The air was crisp, the leaves changing to vibrant shades of orange, yellow, and red. They littered the sidewalks and roads, and swirled in tiny tornadoes a cross the street. It was a couple weeks into October, so it was still warm, but cold enough to wear a sweater. It was my favourite part of the season, sweater weather, as most called it.

In the middle of my fall thoughts, I remembered something important that I needed to ask Mikayla.

“Hey, Kay,” Mikayla looked up at me from her sub. “What are you doing tonight?” I asked.

“Nothing, why?”

“Well, Patrick invited me to go and watch him play tonight, and I wanted to know if you'd come with me. He gave me two tickets.” I said, taking a bite of my sub.

“Play what?” She questioned me.

“Oh, I forgot to mention, he plays hockey. He says he's playing a game tonight, and wanted me to come watch.” I watched Mikayla's face light up

“Yes! I'd love to!” She exclaimed. Then, a puzzled look came across her face. “What time?”

“Uh, 7:30.” I responded.

“Oh man, that's when the Hawks game starts!”

“Oh, well you don't have to come.” I said, disappointed.

“No, no! I'll come. I'll just record the game.” Mikayla smiled at me.

I returned the smile, “Ok.” I said.

We finished up our subs and headed home.

“You ready to go?” Mikayla asked as I opened my door. It was 6:45, and she was driving the two of us to Pat's game.

“Yes I am.” I said cheerily. I was excited; I hadn't seen Patrick all day.

“Alright, let's go.” She said, and I followed her lead down to the parking lot. “Where are we going?” She asked once we got in her car.

“Uhh..” I said, fumbling in my purse. “Here.” I handed her a piece of paper that I had written the address to the arena on.

Mikayla started driving, and I felt my phone vibrate in my lap. I looked and saw I had a new message from Pat.

“Hey Kat! You still coming to the game tonight?” Read the message.

I replied with: “Of course! We're on our way now :)”

“We?” He replied.

“Well you gave me two tickets, don't worry, you'll meet her after.”

“Alright, see you there babe ;)”

I must have been smiling, because Mikayla started to laugh. “Awe, what're you all smiley for?”

“Nothing,” I replied. “Just Pat making sure I was still coming.”

“Does he know I'm coming?” Mikayla asked, looking a bit concerned.

“Yes, don't worry. I told him I brought a friend along. You'll meet him after.” I gave her a reassuring smile.

“Ok, good.” She said, sighing. She pulled into a parking lot of a very large building. “United Center” read a sign we passed. “Katlina, are you sure this is the place?”

“Um, I believe so? It's what the tickets said.” I replied.

“Let me see them.” Mikayla asked, parking.

“Ok.” I handed her the envelope. I watched her as she opened it, and pulled out the tickets. Her jaw dropped, and she turned to me.

“Kat, there are Blackhawks tickets!” She exclaimed, eyes as big as planets. I gave her a confused look. She proceeded to read the tickets out loud. “ 'Columbus Blue Jackets versus Chicago Blackhawks. 7:30pm October 13th.' Do you know what this means?”

“No.” I responded, trying to put the pieces together.

Mikayla already had the puzzle put together. “You never told me you were dating an NHL player!”

I laughed, but I was stunned. “I didn't know, or else I would have told you!” We both got out of the car and headed for our gate. When we got inside, Mikayla insisted that we buy matching Hawks t-shirts, so we didn't stand out. We got to our seats, which were relatively close to the ice, and a few minutes later, the lights dimmed, and the announcer's voice boomed over the speakers, filling the arena. Mikayla and I watched intently as the announcer called out player's names, and they skated onto the ice, and lined up on the blue line. After, they skated around for warm up. I saw Patrick skating around, looking into the crowd, for me, I presumed.

Mikayla bumped me on the shoulder. “If your boyfriend I who I think it is, I'm going to freak out, Kat.”

“I don't know, Kay. If he comes close, I'll point him out, ok?” She nodded in agreement.

Almost on queue, Patrick spotted me and skated close to the glass. He smiled at me, and waved. I waved back, then he winked. I smiled, and heard a bunch of shrieks from a few rows in front. Pat skated off, and I looked at the girls who were sitting right close to the glass, freaking out.

“He winked at me, did you see that? Patrick Kane winked at me!” One cried out.

“No, he winked at me! We're soul mates!” Another shouted.

“No, he winked at me...” I muttered to myself. But Mikayla heard.

“Oh my god, Kat! I can't believe you're dating the Patrick Kane!” Mikayla said in a hushed excitement.

“What?”

“You're dating Kaner!” She shrieked quietly.

“I guess I am.” I laughed to myself. I couldn't believe he didn't tell me, though. It wasn't too big of a deal.

♠ ♠ ♠

After the game, which the Hawks won 3-2 in overtime, Mikayla and I headed over to the family area to meet up with Patrick. We sat waiting for about 15 minutes; Pat was the last one out. He was followed by one other guy, who was familiar to me, but I couldn't remember his name.

Pat smiled at me when he saw me. “Hey, Kat.” He said when he walked over to me. He placed a gentle kiss on my lips and asked, “So, did you enjoy the game?”

“I did.” I replied. “This is my friend, Mikayla.” I gestured to Mikayla who gave a shy wave.

“Hey Mikayla. I'm Patrick, and this is Jonathan.” Pat said, pointing beside him to Jon.

“Hey.” Jon said through a crooked smile. “Nice to meet you.” He stuck out his hand and shook Mikayla's. I watched as she tried to hide the blush that crept a cross her cheeks.

“So, do you two want to go out to dinner? With me and Jonny, here, of course.” Pat asked.

“Sure!” I replied. “Mikayla, you gonna come?”

“Yea, sure!” She responded.

“Sounds good.” Jon said.

“Ok, let's go.” Pat said, and the three of us followed him out of the United Center.

“This is going to be fun,” I thought to myself.
