Beginning

1

Kat walked around her room, pacing between the closet and the mirror deciding what dress she was going to wear for the night. She was in her third outfit and stood there unimpressed with her reflection in the mirror. Hearing her phone buzz, she walked over to her desk glancing down at the screen seeing the message from David; he was on his way. Kat had been friends with David since she was a teenager and he needed a date to the Bruins function being held that evening, so of course she said yes. Usually she never fussed this much about what she wore, but when she was going to spend the night with the WAG's of the team, she was going to make sure she looked her best. Finally settling on a black dress with white polka dots, she applied a light coat of makeup to her face and looked at her appearance in the mirror. She knew that she wasn't going to be quite up to par for an evening with the WAG's, but to her it was good enough. Her phone buzzed again and she read the message saying that he was here. She ran around her room looking for the shoes that she always wore with this dress, but was coming up short in the search. A few minutes later her phone buzzed again.
'You always look beautiful, now stop fussing we're going to be late.'
She sighed at the message, smiling slightly at the compliment but still searching for the shoes. Looking under her bed she pulled out the pair she was looking for and slid them on her feet running down the stairs and out the front door slamming it behind her. Slowing her pace as she headed to the open car door that was waiting for her she smiled at David who was looking handsome in his dress pants, button down and tie standing beside it looking at her with a slight smirk.
"Told you."
She looked up at him with confusion on her face as she approached the car.
"You look beautiful, as always."
She rolled her eyes and got in the car, David closing the door after her. As he was getting in the car she started her rebuttal.
"I was looking for my shoes, not fussing with myself thank you very much."
"I hope your shoes are worth my speeding to get us there on time."
"They were! You expect me to not have the perfect shoes when I'm getting thrown to the wolves." She looked over at him with a pointed look.
"They're not that bad."
"That's what you think."
Stopping at a red light, he put his hand on the gear shift and looked over at her.
"I'll make it up to you, I promise."
"You're going to have to buy me a lot of Chinese takeout and beer to makeup for this my friend."
He chuckled at her demands and looked back at the road. A few minutes later they pulled into the parking lot and Kat sighed as she stepped out of the car. She stood looking at the building and then looked across the hood of the car to David.
"It is a damn good thing I like you."
"If you didn't want to come, you could have just said no." He said with a chuckle.
"It's not that I didn't want to come, but can't I just hang out with the guys?"
He walked over to her, wrapping his arm around her shoulder and starting to walk towards the building.
"You can hang out with whoever you want, but just remember, you're my date."
She chuckled, "Noted Mr. Krejci."
He sighed lightly as he opened the door for her watching her walk past him, taking in her full appearance for the first time since she got in the car. She really did look beautiful, but she didn't need to get dolled up to accomplish that. She walked in a few feet before realizing that David wasn't behind her anymore, she turned, looking back to the door seeing David standing there staring.
"You coming?"
Her voice snapped him out of his trance and he walked through the door.
"Yeah, yeah."
She raised her eyebrow at him, but let it go and walked further into the building. He finally caught up to her and placed his hand on the small of her back as they entered the large room that they would be spending the rest of the night in. He could feel her relax at his touch on her back and smiled slightly to himself. Walking in the room, a few heads turned at the sound of the door opening and the first people to notice the new additions to the room were Looch and his wife, Brittany. Kat was thankful that they were there, Brittany being one of the only WAG's she could actually stand to spend more than five minutes with. They headed in the direction of the couple and Milan was the first to speak.
"Kat, should have known."
Kat looked up at him with narrowed eyes, "Should have known what?"
Before he could answer, he received a swat from Brittany who chuckled and lightly said, "don't start."
While Kat was looking at the couple confused, Brittany reached across giving her a small hug.
"You look beautiful!" Then she looked over at David, "and you look quite handsome."
Milan rolled his eyes at his wife's need to compliment everyone on what they were wearing and David chuckled.
"Thanks, but I definitely look better with her on my arm." He bumped his hip slightly into Kat's looking down at her as she rolled her eyes.
"But if you had asked him ten minutes ago, I was the reason we were late."
She returned his hip bump, smirking up at him as he was still looking down at her. The girls shared a chuckle and Milan and David started talking about what else? Hockey. Brittany grabbed Kat's hand and pulled her through the men, heading towards the group of women that was starting to form at the side of the room. As they approached the group of women, she received many friendly greetings; some genuine and some fake, but that was as to be expected with this smattering of women. After small talk had been awkwardly made, Brittany leaned over to Kat.
"To be honest, I didn't expect to see you here. I don't think they did either," she pointed to a group of the younger women who were huddled in a circle occasionally glancing over at Kat and whispering to each other.
She rolled her eyes at the group and sighed slightly, "why not?"
"Well, this was more of a players and wives or girlfriends type thing, not saying that I'm not happy you're here, just pointing out a fact."
She shrugged lightly, "he didn't want to go without a date, so I came."
"He wouldn't have been the only one, Dougie and Quaider don't have dates."
Kat chuckled at her statement, a smirk growing on her face. "Do Dougie and Quaider ever have dates Brit?"
"Fair point, but not the point I was trying to make." She laughed and glanced over to one of the groups of teammates that were scattered around the room. From the second the girls started walking away, David had kept his eye on Kat and it definitely did not go unnoticed by Brittany.
"So there's nothing going on between you and David?"
Kat's eyes followed the path that Brittany's had just taken and ended up looking straight into his eyes. She smiled softly and he returned it, then turned back to his group. She turned back to Brittany to give her her answer.
"Nope."
The look on the girl's face said that she didn't believe her, but she didn't say anything about it.
"What?"
"Nothing. I just know that a lot of girls would kill to have him look at them the way he looks at you, so it's hard to believe there's nothing there."
Kat's brows furrowed as she took a sip of the drink that was in her hand and contemplated what Brittany had just said silently.
"He's barely taken his eyes off of you since I dragged you over here, but I'll believe you." She said with a smirk on her face as she departed from the table. As Brittany left a few new WAG's sat down to talk to Kat, but eventually the words they were saying were just a blur.
Half an hour later, Kat finally found her chance to escape and worked her way across the room to where the men were mingling, weaving her way through the team to make her way to the table David currently sat at with a group of his teammates. He was talking to Tuukka as he felt hands on his shoulders, leaning into him. Seconds later he felt lips by his ear.
"Save me."
He looked up beside him to see Kat with a drained look on her face from over an hour of conversing with various women, not all of whom she enjoyed being around. He chuckled lightly and motioned to the chair beside him. As she sat he asked, "From what?"
"WAG's, they're too much work. This yours?" She points to the glass in front of him and as he nods, she grabs it, drinking the rest of its contents.
David chuckled at how quick she emptied his glass and wrapped his arm around the back of her chair, leaning into her slightly.
"I'm not sure if I said thank you for agreeing to come to this with me, but thank you."
"Your words mean nothing to me, babe. It's the Chinese and beer that speak volumes."
He laughed, pressing a light kiss to her temple as he got up to get her another drink. These gestures weren't uncommon between them, knowing each other so long it just became part of the routine that she barely even noticed. But that didn't mean that everyone else didn't notice it. When she looked back at the other guys at the table she noticed that Milan and Tuukka were sitting beside each other both smirking at her.
"What?" She said exasperatedly.
"Nothing." They both said in unison, but they shared the same look that Brittany had held on her face not too long ago. Just as she was about to respond, there was a drink placed in front of her and a body beside her again. Deciding to ignore the looks the men across the table were giving her, she picked up the glass and took a long drink from it.
"Geeze, slow down. I mean, I know it's free but I don't feel like carrying you into the house tonight."
She closed her eyes and sighed, leaning back into the chair. "Don't worry." She sat like that for a few minutes, trying to stop the whirlwind of thoughts that were going through her head.
As she sat there, David tried his best to subtly watch her, taking in the angelic look she currently held with her eyes closed. He had watched her over the past few hours entertain conversations with almost every woman on the other side of the room, but he knew that was one of her charms; she could talk her way into just about anyone liking her, even if she didn't like them. He studied her for a few more moments, thinking back to some of the conversations that his teammates and him had had since arriving. Some of them focused on the game, others focused about how he kept glancing over at Kat, wherever she was, and some about how long Kat had been around equaling the amount of time David had been single. He brushed all these off at the time, but sitting there looking at her brought all these back. They may have been right, but he had never told Kat that there was hidden feelings there; they had known each other too long and been through too much for him to mess it up now.
She sighed again and opened her eyes, glancing around the room.
"Where did everyone go?" She commented when she noticed that about half of the patrons in the room had suddenly disappeared.
"There's dancing in the next room."
"Ah, and who would have thought hockey players would dance?"
"Correction, try to dance."
She smiled at his statement and turned her head to the set of glass doors that had caught her eye. She noticed that there was a small outdoor patio right off the room that they were currently in and she had to restrain herself from running out there for some mind clearing fresh air. As she stood up she grabbed David's hand pulling him along with her. When they were finally outside she leaned up against the railing and took in a deep breath, revelling in the crispness of the air. She looked over at David who had taken stance beside her against the railing, "Having fun?"
He shrugged, "not bad. I know better than to ask you that though."
She chuckled lightly and closed her eyes again. "It's not that bad, I can honestly say I've been through worse."
"And what was that, the time you crashed your car and stood on the street corner waiting for me to get done practice to pick you up?"
She didn't open her eyes as he looked down at her, but he could see the smirk playing on her lips before she answered.
"Hey, I thought we were to never speak of that again."
He was quiet as he examined her features again in the moonlight. When he didn't answer, she opened her eyes looking up at him, catching him in the act. As soon as their eyes connected, she felt her heart rate increase. She would never admit there was more than just feelings of friendship towards him, but moments like these made it harder to keep her will. After a few seconds, he looked away, awkwardly moving his hand to the back of his neck. They sat there for a few moments before she stepped out into the middle of the concrete balcony and held her hands towards him.
"Dance with me."
It was an order, not a question and he looked at her with a raised eyebrow.
"Come on, they're dancing in there, I want to dance out here."
He obliged and made his way over to her, placing one hand on her waist and the other finding her free hand. The pair swayed lightly to the faint music that could be heard from the open windows the room over, and she could feel him glancing down at her frequently. Her heart was still racing, but she decided to be bold and took a chance.
"So Brittany seems to think that there's more to us than just friends."
She noticed his step slightly falter when she said that, but he corrected quickly and regained his composure.
"Oh really?"
She looked up into his eyes and stared into them for a minute before responding softly, "yeah."
"That's funny, because so do half of the guys." He responded in a tone equally as soft as hers.
"She said she saw you watching me."
"I was."
The pair never broke the eye contact they were holding as they continued swaying.
"Why?"
"I already told you."
She furrowed her brow in confusion and he smiled.
"I told you before we even left that you looked beautiful."
She could feel the blush rising in her cheeks as she shook her head and looked towards her feet. It definitely wasn't the first time that David had called her beautiful, but this time the meaning felt different. He stopped them from moving, as he detached his hand from hers, moving it under her chin tilting her head up to look at him and pulled her closer to his body.
"I guess you could say Brit's right. At least, I want her to be."
She held his gaze again, "me too."
His lips moved into a small smile at her response and he started to tilt his head down to hers. He captured her lips in his, wrapping the hand that was on her waist around her back pulling her closer. After a moment, she moved her hands up around his neck and the pair stayed like that for a few minutes.
Kat pulled away, leaving her hands on his neck. She let out a deep breath and looked up at David.
"I told you I would make it up to you. for coming tonight."
She chuckled at him, a smile plastered on her face.
"That was a lot better than Chinese and beer. And you know how I feel about them."
A smirk crossed his features, "and this is only the beginning."
