Becoming Stronger together

*A few months later*

Christian is home from the hospital. He is still sore but he's doing a lot better. Patrick and Gina are helping him manage his diabetes. They've seen him have a few "off days" and they are working on how to prevent it from happening and just keep his levels up. Everyone on the team is fully aware of keeping an eye on him not only because his diabetes, but because he just got out of the hospital a few months ago from a heart transplant. Gina and Patrick had also adopted Christian which was a huge deal to Christian so he's super excited about that and is occasionally caught calling Patrick or Gina mom and dad.

*At The Kanes'*

"Christian I need you to get up and eat something!" Gina Yelled as she got food set on the table.
Christian walked into the kitchen, "Hey bubba. How yah feeling?" Patrick asked
"Tired. May I just hangout around here today?" Christian asked
"Did you check your levels? If not, you need to do that, then eat and go shower. We have your doctors appointment today and Patricks taking you. Other than that, you can lay low here today. Deal?" Gina said handing him a plate of food.

Christian went and checked his levels. He was under what he should be, but that was normal for just waking up. He went to eat but Tristan already ate his food. For a 4 year old, Tristan ate a lot. Patrick walked into the kitchen as Christian was leaving.

"Hey bub did you get something to eat?" Patrick asked
"Nah. T ate whatever Gina made. I'll get something after I shower." Christian said walking passed him.
"No, I want you to eat something first. Come on Christian. You have a doctors appointment today and you need to keep your levels up. Sit down and I'll make you something." Patrick said sitting his brother down at the table
"Ugh I hate this. I hope you guys know that." Christian whined
"What? The diabetes? It's something that you are going to have the rest of your life." Patrick said
Christian got up, "No you guys treating me like I'm 5. I can keep track of my health and levels. I don't need y'all nagging me."
"It's not meant to be annoying. We're just looking out for you." Patrick said, "go shower and you can eat when you're out. ok?"
Christian nodded and went to shower.

"Hey Sexy" Gina said kissing Patrick, "Did he eat?"
Patrick nodded no, "He's going to go shower then he'll eat..."
"Are you okay? You seem down." Gina asked
"He wants space to take care of his health issues without us nagging him. I just worry about him." Patrick said
"He's always going to want space, but at the end of the day. He needs us to nag him. I'm taking T to daycare, then I'll see you guys when I'm off work." Gina said leaving.

*At the doctors*

"So how's your chest feeling?" The doctor asked hooking up the EKG to Christian
"Good. Sore still but my heart isn't racing and I'm not in any pain." Christian said
"The soreness is going to take awhile before it goes away. Now just relax and don't focus on anything but breathing." The doctor says starting the EKG
"Huh. That's strange. Your heart rate is a lot slower than it should be. Are you feeling ok?" The Doctor asked him
Christian was tired and clammy looking, "Yeah. It could just be because my diabetes."
"That only happens when your levels are below 40. I'll be right back." The doctor went to get an insulin pump, "Did you eat anything today? Your levels are at 78."
"No I didn't have time to eat..." Christian said looking at his hands
Patrick looked at Christian, "He said he was going to eat, and I want to be able to trust him, so I did. I should've checked. I'm sorry Doc."

The doctor got him insulin and had him hooked up to the EKG for awhile to make sure it was just his diabetes and nothing serious. Once Christians' levels went up he was able to head home. Patrick was already late to his morning skate though, so Christian tagged along which he wasn't too thrilled about.

*United Center*

"Patrick. You're late. This better not be a new habit." Jonny said teasing him
"Hey Tazer and no Christian had a doctors appointment this morning and it took longer than I thought. Where's Q?" Patrick said getting geared up
"On the ice. we'll take shit head here and get him some food." Shaw said
Christian looked at them, "I'm good. I already ate. Thanks though"
"Little man you can eat around 12 alright. Just check before and after. Love you bub" Kane said leaving to get on the ice.

Christian went to the weight room and just slept. They team was up their doing their "off-ice" workouts and Kane came up after an hour or practice. The team was hanging out and talking about dinner plans and who's place they were going to. Kane and Toews offered up their place since Tristan and Gina were out for the night. They waited up for Patrick to bike 8 miles then headed back to their place.

*Trump Tower*

"Hey dad, I mean Pat, can I go hangout with friends tonight?" Christian asked
"You can call me dad if you want. I really don't care. I mean I kind of am your dad now. And why don't you have friends here. I don't know if it's such a good idea for you to be out driving with your levels being as low as they are today." Patrick suggested
"Thats fine. How many can I have over?" Christian asked
"Just a few" Patrick said, "and I need to know if you guys are spending the night or not."
"Thanks" Christian says and texted around 50 people to come over
