Story of Us

two

“Oh shit, I’m sorry.”

“My iPhone!,” Kaya exclaimed, quickly bending down to pick up her phone. She had only owned it for a month, as she wiped the snow off the screen; she prayed that the screen hadn’t cracked.

Patrick was unsettled as the brunette let out a small cry, as she stared at her phone.
“What?” He asked looking over her phone, to see the long thin crack that now adorned her screen. Patrick could have kicked himself; he ran his hand over his face. “Shit, look I’m really sor-“

The brunette held her hand up in a dismissive manner, “You know what, its fine.” She said shrugging, holding the phone in her palm like a baby bird. “I can still see everything; it’s just a bit…uglier now. But that’s fine.” Pat could tell that even though her voice was even, she was anything but calm; her eyes were full of frustration.

He made a face, plucking the phone from her hand to examine it. Kaya took the opportunity to look him over; he was as handsome as all the times she had seen him on the television. His eyes were as clear and deep as a lagoon and his lips lush and full. If she wasn’t so upset, she might have swooned a little but at the moment Patrick Kane was on the top of her “to kill” list.

After a few moments of examination, Patrick handed her the phone back. “Let me buy you a new one.”

Kaya looked at him like he had just opened his face and showed her his wires, “I can’t let you do that.”

He made a face, “Why not?”

Kaya couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of the thought, “I just can’t… look its fine. It’s just a crack, I’ll live.”

Patrick didn’t know what to do as she side stepped him and began to walk away. He stood in place for a split second before following her.

“Let me buy you a new phone, it really isn’t that big of a deal.” He said falling into step with her.

Kaya rolled her eyes, “You just don’t give up, do you? It’s fine, please don’t worry about it.”

Patrick couldn’t help but smile a little at how big her brown eyes were, “I feel terribly, please let me do this.”

Kaya stopped walking, looking him straight in the eye, “No.” She said firmly, “Absolutely not, now if you excuse me I have to be some-“

Patrick put a hand on his arm, stopping her in her tracks once again. “Please.” He watched as emotions shot through her bright brown eyes, she was considering it; she bit her full pink lips before shaking her head.

“Have a nice day.” She replied walking away. Kaya hustled down the street before ducking into a Starbucks, as she waited in line; she pulled her phone out, scrolling through her contacts, before typing out a message to her friend Kaeleigh.

Such a strange morning. Get ready for story time.

“What can I get you?” The barista asked with a smile. She looked to be about 20, with a pixie cut.
Kaya politely smiled back, “Can I get a grande vanilla chai latte, please?”

“And a coffee two sugars, two creams.” A voice said beside her. Kaya shot daggers at Patrick as he handed the girl a twenty. Patrick just looked at her grimaced and smiled brightly.

“You won’t let me buy you a new phone, so the least I can do is buy your coffee.”

Kaya scoffed and stomped off to a table. Patrick shook his head with a chuckle before grabbing the coffees and telling the barista to ‘keep the change’.

“Stalking is a federal offense.” She snapped taking off her trench coat, revealing a navy blue dress.

Patrick laughed sitting across from the brooding girl, placing the coffee in front of her. “I think I’ll be okay.”

“Listen, Kaner, as cute as your whole ‘gentleman act’ is, can you please leave me alone?”

He smirked, “So you do know who I am?” Patrick laughed as she rolled her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest.

“So beside the point, whoop de doo, I know who you are. The great Patrick Kane, now will you please leave me alone?” Patrick laughed again as she waved her hands in the air as she said “whoop de doo”.

“No can do, “He said sipping his coffee, “Not until you agree to let me buy you a new phone.”

“How many times do I have to say no? Have fun stalking me until the end of time.”
Patrick smirked again, “I will, ain’t a half bad view.”

Kaya laughed openly, “Does this usually work for you? Do you go around breaking girl’s phones, so you can hit on them relentlessly?”

He looked amused, “Believe it or not, I have never broken a girl’s phone before. You’re the first one.”

“How special I must be then…” She said sarcastically.

"Usually I invite girls to watch practice, sign some things, and their mine." Patrick said with a smirk.

The brunette almost choked on her latte laughing, " And that actually works?"

"Every time, what can I say? I'm a stud."

"And oh so humble..." She replied with a chuckle before her eyes followed the people outside the coffee shop window.

Patrick took her in fully, she had long brown hair that fell to her shoulders in a messy way, her eyes were amber, and they were so expressive darting around like they never missed a thing. Her skin was golden and olive all at the same time, it looked soft. She was petite but Patrick couldn’t really tell how tall she was without heels. Her breasts were perfect; not too big, not too small, her torso was lean and smooth leading to curvy hips and perfect ass. She was hot, the only thing that stopped him from claiming her as his new conquest was her and that interested him. Usually women were throwing themselves at him but she didn’t. She knew who he was and she didn’t give a shit, she wouldn’t even let him replace her cell phone.

“Did your brain short circuit? Too many blows to the head can do that.”

Patrick looked into her brown eyes with a small grin, “What do you do?”

Kaya laughed at the generic question, “So original…” She shook her head, “I’m an interior designer for a big firm. I take people’s bland spaces and make them livable. Or that’s what our business cards say.”

Patrick chuckled at her small joke; he had expected her to say she was an aspiring actress or something. “I could use an interior designer; my apartment is a total bachelor pad.”

Even though Patrick was being serious, she laughed, “Next to rich old women, men between the ages of 20 and 27 make up a lot of the firm’s business.”

Patrick laughed, “We need a lot of help. Where are you from?”

She smiled, “Albany, New York.”

“No shit? I’m from Buffalo!”

She laughed again, “My best friend is from Buffalo too. You’re a pretty big deal.”

In the next twenty minutes, Patrick learned a lot about the brunette. She was twenty- two, she graduated from FIT, for her final project she had to redesign the New York Rangers locker room and player’s lounge, and she hated cows.
Patrick threw his head back in laughter, “You can’t be serious! You’re afraid of cows?! Cows

“I’m serious!” She exclaimed, “Their big eyes creep me out!”

Patrick shook his head, “You’re crazy.” He said as his phone started to vibrate, he excused himself for a moment and when he returned she was gone. In her place was a piece of paper the size of an index card with a note scribbled on it in neat cursive.

Was going to be late for work. Thanks for the coffee.

Patrick looked from the paper to the door, she disappeared like Cinderella without any warning or a glass slipper left behind.
