Ch 11

It was game 6 of the Stanley cup finals. The Canucks were up in the series 3-2 to the Ottawa Senators. As usual Dawn had her place in the trainers room at the ready in case she was needed. The boys were going into the third period with the game tied 1-1. Dawn had never been so nervous in her life. Nobody had been hurt yet in this series and that had been a blessing. The clock ticked down to seven minutes left. Dawn decided to go into the lounge to grab a cup of coffee. She had just finished stirring in her sugar when she heard the voice of Dave the assistant trainer calling to me. "Dawn, prepare for zippers." He said. In other words somebody needed stitches. I grabbed some freezing, needle, thread and surgical scissors.

"Who is if now?" She asked as she turned around to see David entering the room with a blood soaked towel to his face. "Oh sweetie." She said tilting his head back as he sat down on the table. She had a look at the cut on his mouth. "That looks pretty bad." She said seeing just how deep the cut went. It was a diagonal cut across the left side of his mouth. "Dave do you want to do it?" She asked cringing.

"He's your boyfriend." He laughed holding his hands up in surrender.

"I'm going to have to do two sets of 3 to 4 stitches." She said biting her lower lip. "This is going to sting." She said as she cleaned the area and applied numbing gel. Carefully she administered the shot before sewing up the two areas with 6 stitches. "There. You'll have a sexy scar in no time." She said smiling. "Anything else I could do for you before you go back out there?" She asked taking off her surgical gloves as his gloved hand grabbed hers.

"Yes." He said with a slight lisp. "Marry me."

"What?" She asked laughing out of shock.

"I mean it. Marry me." He said getting down on the floor on one knee. "I want you to be my wife." He said to her.

"Oh my goodness." She said covering her face with her other hand. "Yes David! Yes!" She said smiling and laughing as he got up and hugged her. He swung her around the room and in that moment Ryan took a breakaway to score the winning goal. It was like the arena had erupted in cheers for their private engagement.

---- ONE YEAR LATER -----

"Dawn, you ready to go?" Kes yelled from the bottom of the staircase of his house.

"I think so." She shouted back. Ryan was her Man of Honour for the wedding. She chose to get ready and have pictures done at his spacious BC home. She descended the stairs in a voluminous Vera Wang off white gown with a cathedral length train and veil. Her shoulder length blonde hair was half up and half down with a natural makeup look.

"Dawn, you look...I don't think I can speak right now." Ryan joked laughing at himself.

"Well that's a first." She said giggling as he handed her a bouquet of stargazer Lillies. "Well...let's go get married." She sighed as they went to the vintage rolls Royce that was waiting in the driveway. The wedding was beautiful. It was in an old United church in Vancouver perfect with stained glass windows and high vaulted ceilings. David was waiting for her at the altar in a grey morning suit. His white smile was bright and dazzling as a tear appeared in his eyes while waiting for his bride.

"You're so beautiful." He said to her as he helped her up the stairs to the altar

. -----

At the reception, Dawn was beginning to regret their choice of letting Ryan be the emcee for the night. "You know it's funny." He said into the microphone as he started his Man of Honour speech. "The first time I saw Dawn, she was working on Boothie. In fact her head was in Boothie's crotch while she stretched him out...and that's likely where it'll end up tonight too." There was laughter, mostly from the men as Dawn's jaw dropped and she gave Kes the look of death. "But in all seriousness, Dawn is a sweet, loving, nurturing woman. She only deserves the best...and since I'm already married I'm glad it's my old friend Boothie." He said eliciting more laughs. "You know, he asked her to marry him after she stitched up his lip at the Stanley cup finals last year. He said he couldn't think of a more perfect moment to ask her than after she took care of him. Now she gets to take care of him for the rest of his life. Dawn has decided to leave us on the Canucks, thanks a lot Boothie." He joked. "Dawn has gained a family of brothers. We'd all gladly defend her, love her, and wish we could give back to her as selflessly as she's given to us. She looked after me after a concussion last season...I'll just say she was the most amazing caretaker." David gave Ryan a death stare. "But now she'll get the chance to take care of him and hopefully some kids down the line."

After the speeches came to an end David and Dawn had their first dance. She didn't think that she could love anyone else more in that moment. Her mind flashed back to her last engagement wondering if she'd even feel half as good about marrying Brett. Not a chance she told herself. She had found her white knight.
