Can't Be Changed

“So what do you think of this one?” Alisa happily spun in the long, deep purple gown in front of the full length mirror. “Patrick?” Alisa asked turning to face the couch he was sitting on in the private boutique that closed down just for her shopping activities.

“Why do I care if I’m not even going?” Patrick mumbled, his arms crossed over his chest.

“I’m asking for your opinion of the dress, im not asking you to get you upset.” Alisa sighed crossing her arms over the expensive fabric.

“I’m not upset.” Patrick defended meeting her unconvinced gaze. “I just don’t know why you had to ask Niemi to go with you.” He quietly added.

“See! You are upset.” Alisa exclaimed spinning back around to admire her dress.

“You have a boyfriend! Why do you have to bring other guys as your little ‘dates’? That’s not fucking cool.” Patrick exploded making Alisa abruptly turn and stare at him, her mouth agape. Realizing there was something wrong with what he had just blurted out his eyes widened as Alisa stepped away from the mirror and towards him.

Giving out an airy little chuckle Alisa stepped closer to Patrick’s cowering figure on the white sofa.
“So…let me get this straight. Because I have a boyfriend, its not cool for me to bring a date to an event if he can’t make it?”

Suddenly a hard realization dawned on Patrick. His girlfriend had pulled out one of the slyest moves in the book. She gave him a strong dose of his own medicine without him even understanding it. Unable to man up to his mistake or apologize for his piggish behavior, he quickly conjured up something to say.

“Well, I guess its okay.” He shrugged nonchalantly. “I guess since I can’t make it, and you already said you were bringing me then its fine if you bring Niemi.” He shrugged once again and calmly sat against the sofa.

Scoffing and catching his bluff, Alisa rolled her eyes as she stepped back into the dressing room.

“Harvey!”

Busting into Alisa’s office with a phone pressed to his ear and his arms full of papers and other ringing phones Harvey answered, “Yes, Miss Beck?”

“I swear if I get another phone call or email asking me if they are on the guest list or not, I will rip someone’s head off!”

Mere days before Alisa’s huge benefit banquet and there were still unresolved issues. Everyone was high strung and anxious as the day of the even approached. Alisa had barely seen Patrick during the past week and only briefly spoke to him over the phone while she stayed in L.A.

“I’ll take care of it. But can you please explain to the venue why you want the square plates?” He asked handing her the blackberry.

“Thank you Harvey, that’s all.” Alisa said snatching the phone from him and sitting back at her desk.

“Hello? Who am I? Who are you? Well because I’m hosting this banquet to raise money for one of my favorite charities and because the money is coming out of my damn wallet so if I want square plates then I will damn well get those square plates, understood?” Alisa ordered to the young intern on the other line. After the frightened individual on the other end confirmed the matter of the square plates Alisa hung up the phone with a sigh and placed her head on her desk for a moment’s rest. As the stress consumed her body, Alisa took in a few deep breaths trying to compose herself.

“Miss Beck?” Harvey interrupted quietly a few moments later, making Alisa lift her head from her desk. “Im sorry but Mr. Jonas is on line 3.” Harvey hesitantly explained. Widening her eyes, Alisa nodded and excused Harvey from the room.

Taking in a breath once more, Alisa picked up her office phone and pressed the blinking red light above the 3.

“Alisa Beck.” She professionally answered, although her stomach was in knots.

“Hey Al,” A familiar voice greeted with an all-too-familiar nickname.

“Kevin,” Alisa acknowledged. “How can I help you?”

“Well I wanted to personally call and RSVP to your benefit.” He explained in his ever friendly voice.

Rolling her eyes Alisa sighed, “Kevin, you have people for that. Seriously, why are you calling?”

“Come on Al, there aren’t any hard feeling still there right?” He tenderly asked.

“No, non whatsoever.” Alisa said, “All the same thank you for RSVPing, but I’m extremely busy. So see you soon.”

“Uh, yeah. It was nice talking to you Al, can’t wait to see you again.”

“Have a nice day, oh and Kevin?” Alisa smiled to herself. “Congratulations on the wedding.” She added before hanging up.

Harvey burst into her office when Alisa was finally off the phone.

“I cannot believe he just called you.” Harvey gasped.

“I know.” Alisa mimicked Harvey’s gasp feeling like a middle schooler gossiping with her friend.

“Where does he get the nerve to call you after all these years?” Harvey asked with a frown.

“He’s just a part of my past I wish not to dwell on.” Alisa sighed as a light knock was heard on the door.

Giving Harvey a questioning glace, she sat back at her desk and waiting to Harvey to open the door.

“Oh, hello Mr.Kane.” Harvey greeted.

As if the air was sucked right out of her lungs Alisa let out a loud gasp as she looked up and saw her boyfriend enter the room, clad in dark jeans and the plaid shirt she had made him buy a few weeks ago.

“Patty!” She exclaimed springing her feet and going as fast as her heels could take her. “What are you doing here?” She asked wrapping her arms around his neck.

“I missed you.” He mumbled into her neck, pulling her close by her waist, as Harvey slipped out of the room with a smile.

“So you flew all the way from Chicago because you missed me?” Alisa smiled looking into his blue eyes.

“Yeah?” Patrick shrugged with a smirk.

“You’re perfect.” She sighed pecking his lips lightly.

“I try.” Patrick grinned nuzzling his nose against hers. “Do you still have more work to do? Or can we go home?”

“I have to make one or two more phone calls but I think Harvey can handle most of the work.”

“Good, make the phone calls on your way home, and let’s go back to your place.” He instructed making her quirk an eyebrow at him.

“Okay Mr. BossyPants.” She rolled her eyes and handed her paperwork over to Harvey and bid him adieu.

“No you frickin didn’t!” Alisa exclaimed as she entered her apartment to see a candlelit dinner set up in her living room. “Baby!”

“I’m leaving tomorrow, so I wanted to have a romantic dinner before my three day absence.” Patrick shrugged.

“Careful there Patty,” Alisa giggled pinching his cheek, “You’re using awfully well constructed sentences.”

“Oh shut up and say thank you.” Patrick laughed pulling her close.

“Thank you so much Patty,” Alisa smiled, “I really needed this today.”

“You’re welcome,” Patrick grinned proudly. “Now kiss me.”

“Someone is very bossy this evening.” Alisa commented brushing her lips against his teasingly.

“You would know.” Patrick scoffed.

“Meaning what?” Alisa exclaimed.

“Kiss me, already.” Patrick sighed pulling her in by the back of her neck. With a sigh she fell into the kiss losing herself in the embrace, but mostly, she was losing herself in Patrick.
