Can't Be Changed

Mend

"Don't ever leave again,” Patrick stressed, "Ever." He sighed holding his girlfriend tightly in his arms as they lay on her couch.

“Patrick, you were the one that left.” Alisa laughed placing her hand on his chest. “I’ve been in Chicago this whole time.”

“Oh, right.” Patrick chuckled, “Well then I’m never leaving again.” He announced.

“Says the traveling hockey player.” Alisa rolled her eyes and peeled herself away from Patrick’s arms and went over to her kitchen where a large pile of mail awaited. “This is interesting…” She paused opening a vanilla and beige envelope pulling out a shimmering gold paper. “It’s a wedding invitation, for Mike and Carrie’s wedding.” Alisa smiled reading the delicate paper.

“Yeah I got one too, you going?” Patrick lazily asked from the couch. “You want to be my plus one?”

“Oh so we’re going together this time? You don’t already have a date lined up?” Alisa asked quirking her eyebrow at Patrick, whose cheeked flamed red. Sighing, Patrick stood from the couch and made his way over to his girlfriend.

“I’m sorry, I was wrong to bring Lauren as my date. I wasn’t thinking.” He apologized wrapping his arms around Alisa’s waist, his head on her shoulder. Alisa grinned a triumphant grin her fingers winding themselves into Patrick’s short hair

“I accept your apology.” She whispered into his ear, kissing his cheek softly.

“Do you have anything to say to me?” Patrick asked pulling back and looking into her eyes, searching for an apology as well.

“Um, nope.” Alisa shrugged going back to searching through her mail.

“So you don’t feel bad about taking Niemi as your date the other night?”

“Not really.” Alisa airily replied, “It was all part of my master plan to make yousee the error of your ways.”

“You’re some kind of messed up,” Patrick laughed pulling her into his chest. He inhaled the smell of her hair, his eyes fluttering shut. The days they spent apart were all worth it if he could have moments to just hold her in his arms. “Hey baby?”

“Hmmm?” Alisa busily shifted through her letters, putting some aside throwing away others.

“What ever happened to meeting your parents?” Immediately Patrick knew he ventured into a touchy subject. Alisa’s entire body went completely rigid and her hands froze as she opened an envelope.

“I was hoping you would forget that…” She quietly replied. Placing her hands flat against the counter, hanging her head.

“I don’t understand what the fucking problem is!” Patrick exclaimed throwing his hands up, storming away from his girlfriend. Alisa rubbed her forehead with her pointer finger and thumb, shutting her eyes.

“Baby-” She started only to be cut of by another outburst.

“Am I really that embarrassing for you?” He exclaimed, “Maybe we should just break up if you feel so ashamed!”

“Patrick!” Alisa yelled trying to gain his attention. “Calm the fuck down!”

“I don’t get it! Why the hell am I not good enough for you?” Patrick asked in a small voice, his chest deflating with dejection.

Alisa blinked a few times before turning away from Patrick, unable to meet his gaze. “Patrick, it’s not that im ashamed, or even embarrassed of you, because I’m not at all.”

“Then what is it baby?” Patrick asked taking Alisa’s hands in his own. The issue was becoming much deeper than just meeting the parents. “Because right about now, it feels like you’re too embarrassed to tell your parents about me. I know im no Harvard graduate, and I’ve had my share of fuck ups but I don’t think I’m that bad that you can’t even tell your parents about me!”

Alisa felt tears pricking her eyes as she witness the hurt in Patrick’s voice as well as the pain in his eyes.

“Baby…” Alisa sighed gently touching Patrick’s cheek with her fingers. “ I’m not ashamed, if I was…well I wouldn’t be with you. My parents went to Greece for three weeks and wont be back for a few more days. I’m not embarrassed by you, I’m embarrassed by them. Sometime’s they can be a little much. But if this means that much to you, then as soon as they get back, we’ll have dinner with them. I promise.”

“I just feel like I’m serious about you…but I don’t know how you feel about me.”

“Baby, you’ll meet them, I promise.”

“Alisa, can you please focus!” Angel screeched wacking her friend with yet another bridal magazine.

“Ang, I can’t even tell the different between white and ivory anymore, find your own tablecloths.” She yawned dropping the magazine onto Angel’s kitchen table.

“Listen rat, this wedding is happening in two months, fucking look.” Angel insisted tossing the magazine back at Alisa.

“Honey?” Jon’s voice echoed through the spacios apartment making Angel bolt from her seat.

“Hi baby!” She squealed jumping into his arms. Rolling her eyes, Alisa looked away letting the couple have their moment. “What are you doing here?” She asked pecking his lips several times.

“I just wanted to know if you wanted dinner, but if you’re busy I’ll go see what Burish is up to.”

“Don’t bother Jon,” Alisa stood from Angel’s table grabbing her phone and bag. “I have dinner plans with Pat and a few phone calls I have to make.”

“Alisa!” Angel groaned, “I need help!”

“Get a wedding planner love!” Alisa smiled giving Jon a quick hug before heading towards the door. “Enjoy your evening!” She added as she exited the apartment.

Getting into her town car, Alisa felt her phone vibrate in her hand. After telling her driver her dinner destination, she glanced down at the screen. Mother

“Shit.” Alisa muttered hitting the answer button. “Hi mom.”

“Hi sweetheart, how are you?” Her mother exclaimed.

“I’m fine, heading to dinner, how are you and dad enjoying Greece?”

“Well Greece was fine, but the weather was terrible so we left early!” Her mother announced

“What do you mean? Where are you now?” Alisa panicked glancing out her window as the car drove through the busy Chicagoan streets.

“We landed in Chicago just a few minuets ago.” Alisa’s mother explained, “Dad and I were thinking that we should join you and Patrick for dinner tonight.”

“You mean right now?”

“Yes, where are you off to?” Her mother asked.

“Trump Tower.”

“We’ll meet you there darling.” Her mother promptly hung up, leaving a stunned Alisa on the other end. It was going to the an interesting evening, to say the least.
