Can't Be Changed

Compromise

Patrick awoke that Sunday morning, with a pounding headache, in his girlfriend’s silent apartment. He shielded his eyes from the bright Chicagoan morning that peeked in through Alisa’s large, floor to ceiling windows.

“Al?” He called out into the silence, wincing at how loud his voice sounded. “Liss?” He asked quieter, still getting no response. “Alis-ahhhh,” He dragged out rolling over so his face was in the pillow, and his arm draped over the side. He pulled out his phone to see Alisa’s coy smile as his wallpaper, making him smirk as he remembered when he snapped that picture. She was giving him a side-glance while her iPhone was glued to her ear. He remembered that she was on the phone with one of the Kardashians talking some business deal about a new perfume line. Patrick was trying with all his might to make her laugh, and when she finally did, he snapped a photo to grace his phone’s home screen.

Dialing her number, his whole body reacted when her voice answered on the other end.

“Hey Liss where are you?” Patrick groggily asked.

“I'm out to lunch,” She giggled, “How’s your headache?”

“Awful, who are you out to lunch with?” Patrick curiously questioned rubbing his forehead.

“I left an Advil on the coffee table, make sure you take it,” Alisa said, and sure enough there was the Advil, waiting for him on the table. “I'm with Antti.” She added casually.

“Who the fuck is Antti?” Patrick asked. “Wait Niemi? You’re out with Niemi?”

“Uh-huh, listen Pat, let me call you later, our food just arrived.” Alisa explained making Pat’s mouth drop open.

“But you were supposed to spend the weekend with me!” He exclaimed childishly.

“That was before you ditched me for a party, and got piss drunk.” She said and he could hear the smile in her voice before she added an “Adios Patty,” and hung up.

Patrick heaved a large sigh, and flopped back against the couch. Pulling his phone back out he sent Alisa a text in hopes of getting her to cut him some slack.

I'm sowwy 

Can we still have dinner?

He sent it and exactly three agonizing minuets later (he counted) she answered back.

My plane for NY leaves @ 9

Chinese @ your place, say 5?

He smiled, thanking his lucky stars he would spend at least some time with his girlfriend.

Cant wait ;)
He sent back before laboriously lifting himself from the couch and dragging his hung-over body to the shower.

“Are you going to that WAG lunch next Saturday?” Patrick asked shovling a forkful of pork fried rice into his mouth.

“What the hell is a WAG?” Alisa asked nibbling on an egg roll, her legs on Patrick’s lap as they ate their takeout while flipping through channels.

“Wives and girlfriends,” Patrick explains, “The wives and girlfriends of the guys on the team, get together and have lunch every so often. I heard they are getting together on Saturday.”

“Oh, yeah Angel told me about that,” Alisa sighed, “I’ll see what I'm doing that day.”

“Do you not want to go?” Patrick asked putting down his fork.

“Do you want me to go?” Alisa countered making Patrick shrug.

“I don’t know, I mean you are my girlfriend…so…” He trailed off, not sure how to pick his words.

“So I have to go?” Alisa asked placing her fork down as well.

“No, I mean, its just all the other girls go…” Patrick bit his lip, unsure of where the conversation was headed.

“What is it like some Parent/Teacher conference?” Alisa exclaimed, “I have a blackhawk boyfriend, now I have to hang out with all the bimbo girls?”

“Why are you so defensive?” Patrick asked furrowing his eyebrows.

“Because they hate me.” Alisa spat standing and heading to the kitchen. Patrick’s eyebrows shot up to his hairline as his girlfriend stomped to the kitchen. One, because he had never seen her display any emotion except for a calm collective one. Two because he was completely surprised to hear that anyone could hate her.

“Wait, wait, wait, hold up, who hates you?” Patrick asked leaning against the counter in the kitchen as Alisa pulled out a water bottle from his fridge.

“They all do!” Alisa said unscrewing the cap, “Just because I'm different to them, they hate me.”

“Different how?” Patrick asked crossing his arms across his chest.

“Well let’s see maybe because I actually have a job, and don’t mooch off my athlete boyfriend, my job takes up a lot of my time, and I cant make every single game, the fact that I don’t drink, or party like them…”

“That’s crazy,” Patrick rolled his eyes putting his hands on her hips, “They may feel threatened by you, because you are different than the other girls I’ve dated, but they don’t hate you. You’re friends with Angel aren’t you?”

“Well she isn’t like the other girls…” Alisa trailed off picking at the botton on Patrick’s white polo.

“I think you should give the other girls a chance.” Patrick whispered kissing Alisa’s forehead. “Maybe you just hate them.” He chuckled.

“They want me to be that Mallory girl you dated, they don’t like me.”

“Melinda,” Patrick corrected.

“Who gives a shit?” Alisa smirked making Patrick throw his head back with a loud laugh.

“Melina was an airhead that was more plastic than an actual Barbie doll, no one liked her, and after a while I realized I didn’t either.” He explained locking their eyes together. “I like my women real.” He grunted his hands groping her behind making her squeal. After a few more playful gropes and a make out session on the couch, Alisa announced that if she did not leave she would miss her plane.

“Call me when you land?” Patrick asked as Alisa stood in his arms at the terminal.

“It’ll be like four in the morning there.” She giggled as he nipped at her neck.

“So?”

“Bye Patty,” She sighed kissing his lips lightly. “I’ll see you in a few days.”

“Wednesday, right?” He asked tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

“Right, only three days.” She smiled as he kissed her once more, and she boarded her plane.
