The Intern

Chapter Nine

Cassie’s POV:
My first real boyfriend and I’m sitting in the waiting room of Mass. General, waiting to hear how he’s doing. I’m a nervous wreck. Kyra is here, I asked her to come down. I can’t handle hospitals alone. Katie’s here too, along with Soupy (never call him Greg, it’s either Soupy or Gregory), waiting to see how he is. I know he and Soupy get along with each other the most. But the rest of the team is waiting to hear from Soupy via text on his condition.
6 hours earlier
Trickles it down the boards. Chimera on the way in and, ah, he just takes an incredible long run at Adam McQuaid. And McQuaid is down, holding his head. Right off the bench. That’s where they’re looking to change the culture of the game. Have Chimera go in and make that bear hug kind of hit. But he’s gonna argue that McQuaid was just as guilty as he on the body contact because he pivoted a little too late.
“ADAM! NO!!!” I scream. I can’t help it. He just asked me to be his girlfriend and now this happens. I know I’m not supposed to let anyone know we’re dating now. We just started going out, we don’t want to have to end it or one of us get in trouble so soon. We both agreed that we’re going to try and keep it a secret until the end of the season. But when I see him just lying on the ice, holding his head, I show my emotions.
He’s slow to get up and needs help skating to the bench. From what I can tell, it’s not looking good, and I’m on the opposite side of the ice. Zanon takes his arm and helps guide him to where the trainers await. They immediately lead him down the tunnel and to the dark room. I want to go and check on him, but I know I need to finish my job here at the game. I can’t even text him, because of the possible concussion. The trainers won’t let him have his phone. And besides, it’s still game time. They’re not allowed to check their phones until the game’s done. I hear via Noah, the training intern, that they’re sending him to Mass General for more testing.
Several hours later and he’s released with just a cut under his eye. He passed the concussion test, which is a miracle I must say, judging by how hard he got hit. But I’m not so sure. When I go to see him after he is released, he seems a little unsteady on his feet. Now, he’s not the most graceful person, but shouldn’t he be able to walk without wobbling? But I’m not the doctor. Katie and Gregory have left after hearing that he was being released, but not before he texted the rest of the team.
Adam’s POV:
It’s only been three days since I got hit from behind. I’ve been cleared to play, but I just don’t feel right. I’ve been having headaches, double vision, and just not feeling like myself. It kind of feels like my first concussion, but I’ve been cleared to play so I can’t have one right? I got hit on Thursday. When I woke up Friday morning, my left eye had swollen shut from where I got hit.
After my third shift on the ice, I can tell something is definitely wrong. I can’t see the puck well and it’s affecting my skating. I tell the trainer on the bench about it and he immediately leads me down the tunnel and back to the dark room. This time I don’t pass. I ask if I can text someone to meet me at the hospital and they say it’s fine.
Cassie: what’s wrong? Saw you leave
Me: heading to the hospital
Cassie: what?! Are you okay?
Me:….failed the concussion test. Going to Mass General. Meet me there
Cassie: on my way
I put down my phone and take my gear off. Since I’m not returning, I just keep my base layers on and slip on my trainers. I head out and meet one of the training staff, who drives me to the hospital. Cassie is already there and I wonder how she got out so fast.
Cassie’s POV:
For the second time in less than a week, I’m waiting for my boyfriend in the waiting room. This time, I beat him there. I told my boss that there was a family emergency and needed to leave early. Luckily, they didn’t put two and two together, with Adam and I leaving within minutes of each other. I spot Noah leading Adam into the hospital. He knows we’re dating. He’s actually the only one who knows, and that’s because he figured it out. We plan on telling the rest of the Bruins staff after the season ends. I run up to Adam and get ready to hug him, but pull back at the last second. He looks like he’s in a lot of pain. His head must be killing him. He’s squinting and looks ready to collapse at any moment. His left eye, where he got cut, is all black and blue. Noah is talking to one of the nurses, who leads Adam back to a room. They must have called and said they were coming. Noah stays with me until one of the nurses returns, about an hour later. I release Noah’s hand, unaware of the death grip that I had on it.
“So, how is he?”
“Well, he does have a concussion. From the looks of it, a moderate one. We’re going to keep him overnight for observation, since he has a history of them.”
“How did this get missed the first time?”
“Sometimes, concussions don’t show themselves right away. With brain injuries, they’re tricky. They were more concerned about his eye, than anything else. But he passed the test the first time.”
“But even I could tell something was wrong. How could doctors miss something that was obvious to me?”
“Like I said, concussions are tricky. Someone with a concussion can pass the test the first time, but fail a few days later. The brain is surprisingly resilient. Only time can heal a concussion. But keep a good eye on him. The first week is the most important. He’ll be very sensitive to everything. We’re keeping the room dark to dull the stimulation.”
“Okay. Can I see him now?”
“Usually it’s only family, but he told me his girlfriend was here. I’m assuming that’s you?”
“Yes.”
“I suppose I can allow you in for a few minutes. He really wants to see you,” the nurse says, leading me down a hallway to a private room. The lights are dimmed and the blinds are drawn. Adam is laying in the bed, eyes closed and a pained look on his face. I hate seeing him like this. I walk over and sit down in the chair beside the bed. I grab his hand and squeeze it, knowing that it comforts him and he’ll know it’s me. Feeling my hand in his, he opens one eye slightly to look at me. They’re hazy, not the crisp blue-green I’m used too, like he’s not all there.
“Hey, you came,” he says, his speech soft and slurred slightly.
“I came as soon as you texted me. How are you feeling?”
“Not too great. My head’s killing me right now.”
“Just rest. The nurse said only time can heal concussions.”
“I knew that. This isn’t my first concussion.”
“I know, the nurse told me. Why didn’t you,” I squeak out.
“I’ve had some before. Once you have one, you’re more likely to be prone to them. I just didn’t want to worry you. The first one was an accident.”
“You should be more careful.”
“Just a part of hockey, babe.” He’s never called me babe before, but I kind of like it.
“We’ll I’ll always worry about my first boyfriend.” He smiles, then sighs. It’s been a long day and I can tell he’s tired. The nurse comes in to tell me it’s time for me to leave. I give his hand a final squeeze, kiss him goodbye, than head out, so I can catch the T in time to make it back to my apartment. I still have homework to do and class in the morning.

Notes

It's a injured Quaider part, but then again, it wouldn't be a McQuaid story without him getting injured at one point or another. And I feel like this part is an important part in their relationship.

As always, comments are appreciated.

PS: these boys really need to step up their game. We need more scoring opportunities
