Her Eyes

her eyes, that's where I go, when I go home.

Jordan Staal held the door open for Mason O’Rear as they made their way from the newly fallen April snow into a warm diner. She gently took off the black pea-coat she was wearing and Jordan took notice of the curve of her hips under her sweater. He followed her to a table and sat down across from her, noticing how she fidgeted with the scarf around her neck.

She put her hand on the bottom of her scarf and noticed all the eyes on her and Jordan.

“Everybody’s staring at you.” He looked over at her and smiled.

“I do play for the hockey team that these people root for, babe.” Her heart fluttered at the pet name and she looked down to try and hide her blush. He smiled at her. They talked for a few minutes before a waitress came by. They both ordered and Mason was a little upset when the waitress flirted with Jordan. Didn’t she see that Jordan was here with someone? Her hands started to heat and her joints began to shake. And then she realized what she was feeling.

Jealousy.

She unclenched her fists and folded them gently in her lap. He wasn’t hers. She had no right to be jealous of a girl flirting with a boy. Even if it was the boy she was growing fond of.

“Mason.” Her head snapped up at the sound of her name and she realized her foot was set in front of her. Picking up her fork, she set into it.

“So what’s on the agenda for today?” When he said that Mason’s heart almost leapt out of her chest.

“I’m sorry?”

“What are we doing today?” He asked, scratching his head awkwardly.

“Well, we can do something later. But I have a doctor’s appointment in a little while.” She trailed off. Jordan thought about it for a moment.

“Can I go with you?”

“What?”

“Can I go with you?” She furrowed her eyebrows at him. He had better things to do than go with her to a doctor’s appointment, so she was a little wary when he asked.

“I guess.” Jordan smiled triumphantly and started a new conversation. Mason smiled and laughed along with the conversation, but there was a tiny voice in the back of her mind that kept saying the same thing over and over.

He’s going to see you sick.
