Spraks Fly

Until Forever

As we entered the doors of the restaurant I watched her as she took it all in. The look on her face was one of pure astonishment.

"Evgeni, this is beautiful. It seems so elegant and expensive. Are you sure you want to eat here? I'm not even dressed for a place this fancy."

Putting my hand on the small of her back I said, "Annlie, you look magnificent, just like I told you at home. As for the price, that doesn't matter. You are worth every penny. Besides, are you forgetting I am a professional athlete my love?"

Smiling she took my hand and gave it a little squeeze, "I love you Evgeni."

"I love you too," I said as the hostess, Jenn, led us to our table by the window.

Sitting down I ran my fingers through my hair, truth be told, I was nervous. She looked so beautiful sitting across from me, elegantly reading over her menu.

"I think I'll get the garden salad," she said looking up at me.

"My dear, you can get more than a salad, you can have one of everything if you'd like," I said reaching across the table and grabbing her hand.

"But I can't decide, everything sounds so delicious," she said biting her bottom lip and she scanned over the menu once more, "I think I'll just let you order for me, you come here often, I trust you," she said closing her menu and smiling at me.

"We'll start with a cup of wedding soup and then for our main course we’ll have the pasta carmela ."

"Alright Mr. Malkin, that will be right out," the waitress said grabbing our menus and turning towards the kitchen.

“Pasta Camela, what’s that?” she said asked taking a sip of her water.

“It’s linguini, tomato, garlic, basil, hot pepper and a choice of protein. It’s to die for, one of my favorite dishes that they serve.

“Mmm, it sounds delightful” she said giving my hand a little squeeze.

“I still can not believe that you are here, that you flew all this way and I didn’t even know. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t tell you because I wanted to surprise you and I knew if I told you you would try to talk me out of it. You would have told me that you didn’t want me sacrificing my job and everything I had come to know just to be with you. You would have tried to persuade me that you were not worth it when I know how much you truly are. How much we truly are worth it.”

It seemed as though it didn’t matter what I said to her, she always had the perfect answer. There wasn’t a single flaw with her, she was purely perfection. Every word that left her lips made my stomach flip-flop and my cheeks feel warm. It was a feeling I had grown used to in the past few weeks, a feeling I very much enjoyed. A feeling I looked forward to feeling for the rest of my life.

“Two wedding soups,” the waitress said, disrupting my thoughts.

“Yes, thank you,” I said taking a deep breath, this was the moment.

As she set the cups down in front of us, I looked across the table at Annlie and waited for a reaction.

Sitting across the table from Evgeni I felt more confident than I had ever felt before. Ever since I arrived in Pittsburgh he had been showering me with compliments and kind words. Much to be expected from the kind, caring and gentle Russian that I had grown up with.

“Your soups,” the waitress said as she leaned across the table to place a cup of soup in front of Evgeni and myself.

“Thank you,” Evgeni replied, sitting up in his chair a bit and leaning forward.

As I looked down, I gasped. Sitting on top of a green cabbage leaf at the top of my soup was a glistening diamond ring. Confused and shocked I looked at Evgeni who sat smirking.

“What is going on?” I asked a little confused.

“Annlie,” he said coming to my side of the table, kneeling down and taking my left hand in his, “I have loved you for as long as I can remember. You showing up here today made me the happiest I have ever been in my entire life. You made me realize over the past few weeks that it does not matter how many goals I score, how many games I win, if I don’t have you, I don’t have anything at all. Annlie, you make my stomach flip-flop, my heart skip beats and my cheeks hurt from smiling so much. You give me all of these feelings that I have never felt before, but absolutely love feeling and would love to feel the rest of my life.”
Taking the ring, he looked deep into my eyes and said, “I know this is not custom in Russia, but I would very much like it if you would become my wife Annlie. I want you to experience all of the wonderful things this country has to offer and to come to love it as much as I do. So Annlie, will you marry me?”

I couldn’t believe that this was happening. This was the type of thing I had watched in movies. American girls falling madly in love with their best friend and then they propose in the most magical and special places. Being in Russia, I never thought it was possible, but Evgeni had made it all possible. Without hesitation I answered him, “Yes.”

“Yes?” he asked smiling.

“Yes,” I said nodding my head vigorously as he placed the ring on my ring finger and stood, pulling me up with him. Throwing my arms around his neck I admired the delicate ring that now glistened on my finger.

“Annlie, you are the greatest person to ever walk into my life and I never want to be without you. I love you Ann,” he said holding me tight.

“I love you too Evgeni,” I said pulling back and looking him right in the eye, “Always.”

Sitting back down at the table, we finished our dinner. As we were making our way out the door of the restaurant, all of the wait staff stopped and applauded. Evgeni took the applause in stride and smiled proudly, he was used to that sort of thing. I, on the other hand felt my cheeks warm up and become as red as my dress.

“Congratulations,” the hostess said opening the door for us to leave.

“Thank you,” I said walking by.

“Evgeni, did you tell all of them what you were up to?” I asked looking up at him as we made our way to the Patriot.

“I might have,” he said as he unlocked the doors and opened mine for me to get in.

“You little sneak. I knew you were up to something when I came out of the shower, I could tell by the look on your face.”

Laughing he got in the drivers side and headed in the direction of the apartment.
