Breaking the Ice

Un

We played the shittiest game and Dan basically ripped us a new one. After the reaming Dan came over to me and gave me a pat on the back.

“How’s the face?”

“Stings, but I’m good.” I got a chance to ice my face for a few shifts on the bench, but I'm sure it was still swollen.

“You ready for the shit storm that’s coming?” he asked referring to the media wave that was sure overwhelm me.

“As ready as I’m going to be”. I took a deep breath hoping it wouldn't be so bad.

“We all support you so if you need anything-“

“Thanks.” He gave me a tiny smile and left the locker room.

Within just a few minutes I was surrounded by reporters with their microphones shoved just inches away from my face.

“How does it feel to be the first woman to get into an NHL fight?”

“I don’t know, how does it look?” I joked with Dan Potash.

“It could be worse, I guess.”

“It’s a part of the game. I’m 5”7’ so facing Tye McGinn isn’t ideal, but it happens. He’s a big guy so I bet it looked like I was punching straight up. It’s the flyers though, it’s going to be a tough game.”

“What do you have to say to people who don’t think it’s right for a man to hit a woman?”

“In the real world, I don’t think it’s right, but I play hockey. I knew it was a possibility. I’m a member of this team and I don’t expect or want anyone to treat me differently. I still take hits and if we fight, we fight. I started it. I’m not going to act like he shouldn’t have hit me back. I didn’t like the hit on Tanger so I did what I had to do.”

“What do you think about the boarding call?” another reporter from way back asked.

“I mean it’s a tough game. People get emotional. I’m not hurt so, it is what it is.”

“How do you think you played tonight?”

“I wish I didn’t hit the post in the first, but we just got outworked tonight. We have a lot we need to change and improve on. There’s not much you can say after getting shut out 6-0.” I winced a smile and the reporters moved on to Vokie who let in 5 goals.

I changed out of my gear. I headed to the showers without talking to anyone. I got to rinse of the smell of defeat next to a few guys. And no, it wasn’t weird like my mother lectured me it would be. The guys were my family. They were like brothers to me. I headed back into the locker room with one towel wrapped up on my head and another around my body. I faced my cubby and slipped my towel down far enough to discretely put on my bra. With my towel around my waist I slipped my matching lace panties on.

“Red today? I like it.” Pauly said walking by me to his stall.

“Whatever firecrotch!” I retorted throwing my towel at him. I slipped on my dress and heels and sat in my stall for a moment. Geno got out of the shower and sat next to me.

“Cheer up. Not your fault. Everybody’s fault” he said putting his wet arm around me.

“Thanks Geno.”

“Plus, you look nice, but what this?” he asked grabbing the fabric hanging off my dress.

“It’s called peplum. Just a style of dress” I explained standing.

“I like.”

“It’s weird” Nealer said walking across the room in his spandex.

“It’s called fashion, I’m surprised you don’t know about it, plaid suit.” He just scoffed at me. I reached up to the top of my stall and grabbed my clutch.

“See you guys later.” I said somberly. I walked quickly to the garage but I heard footsteps behind me.

“Mel, wait up”. I looked back and saw Sid jogging up to me.

“What’s up Sid?” His goldenrod eyes stared down at me. A few minutes after the game I could really see his black eye forming, Without saying anything to me, he grabbed my face gently and his hot lips were against mine. His lips were soft and sweet, but considering the beating my face took less than an hour earlier, it stung. After a second or two I pulled away.

“Sid! What are you-“

“I don’t really fight anyone but after I saw you get boarded, I just lost it. I’ve cared about you for a long time, but”

“Sid we’re teammates- ” He was standing freakishly close to me and I couldn't help but look around. It was February and freezing cold in Pittsburgh. He wrapped his arms around me forcing me to put my hands on his chest.

“Yeah, look Mel. I love you. I love you and nothing will ever change that.”

I was shocked at what I had just heard.

Sidney Crosby. My teammate. My Captain was in love with me.
