Breaking the Ice

Onze

Sid squeezed her tightly and kissed the top of her head. He breathed in her feminine yet exotic scent and he was intoxicated. He never wanted to let her go. She placed a small kiss on his chest through his shirt and he couldn’t help but grin.

“You hungry?” he asked quietly.

“You know it!” she smiled. She was always hungry and he knew it.

“Let’s make something” He suggested.

“You cook?” She asked facing him. He chuckled and began to stand.

“Oh Hell yeah. Come on” he stood and grabbed her hand pulling her into the kitchen.

“Tonight in Hell’s Kitchen we’ll be serving one lobster risotto and-“ he began in a terrible british accent

“Stop, stop! That’s terrible!” She shouted, putting her hands over her ears. They play argued over his terrible accent then she showed him how it was done. Her dead-on cockney accent impressed him

“How can you do that so well?” he asked getting some ingredients from the kitchen.

“Four years of theatre, baby!” She smiled hopping up on the center island.

“That explains a lot” he smiled.

“What do you mean by that?”

“It explains why you’re so----out there”

“Out there? Better watch what you say next Crosby.” Sid stood inches away in front of her and put his hands gently on her knees.

“You’re just special.” He smiled. She felt his eyes on her and she had to look away.

“James is a dick. You’re perfect” he continued. It was nice to hear, but she felt really uncomfortable. She and him had made up about everything, but she was still trying to let things with James sink in. They were together four months. It wasn’t that long, but Mel saw something in him. Something that made her trust him and he betrayed her.

“Sid—“

“You don’t have to say anything. I do care about you. Now let’s get some fancy schmancy food going okay?” he said lightening the mood. Instead of going along with him Mel grabbed Sidney by his shirt, pulled him in towards her, and pressed her lips firmly up against his. He was shocked, but he kissed back. Their tongues entwined and she jumped off the counter, instantly becoming shorter than him. Her arms reached for his neck and his hands were settled at the curve of her waist. She pulled away for air, then somewhat embarrassedly sighed and rested her forehead on his chest.

“Sorry.” She mumbled, still holding on to him.

“It’s okay” he smiled.

The rest of the day was perfect. They cooked together and got into a little food fight during it. She started it. She smeared a bit of olive oil on his arm and it quickly escalated from there. They shared a casual dinner on the couch while watching Homeland. He eventually dropped her off at home and kissed her goodnight at the door. The next day there was a game that neither of them got to play in so they spent their time at the Zoo. It seemed like such a normal thing and Sidney especially felt great. It was a warm, day in the city and even though they got stopped for a few autographs, most people left them alone. They took pictures, posed like a few animals, and had a good lighthearted time. After lunch, which consisted of a chicken salad for her and a chocolate shake for him, they went back to her place to watch the game against the Rangers. A few mintues into the third James got hit in the head with an elbow from Del Zotto. Mel wrenched in her seat and leaned in to see his reaction. She saw the confusion in his eyes and it broke her heart. Especially when he asked, “what happened?” Sid noticed. She clearly wasn’t over him. How could she be? He put a hand on her back and she slowly reclined into him. She was quiet the rest of the game and texted trainer Chris Stewart if Nealer was okay. He told her there was a possible concussion. She sighed heavily and wrapped herself in a nearby blanket. Sid pulled the blanket over his feet and wrapped himself around Mel. They layed together, spooning on the couch, until they both fell asleep.

In the morning Mel was awoken by a weird feeling on her butt.

“Shit!” she jumped up, realizing Sid’s rock hard boner was right against her. He woke up and as soon as he realized what happened his face turned bright red.

“Sorry.” He said running to the bathroom. She took a seat back on the couch and began to laugh.

“I’m so sorry....I…uh….” he began sheepishly walking back into the room.

“It’s okay” she chuckled. “Thinking about me?”

“Oh God—“ he said wincing and placing his hand on his forehead.

“I’m just messing with you Sid.” She smiled cheerily kissing him on the cheek.

“You think I should go see Nealer?” she asked turning on the TV.

“If you want to.” He said a bit coldly.

“I don’t want to be a complete bitch and not go”

“Then go.” Sid crossed his arms. Mel looked at him confused. How could his demeanor change so quickly?

They dropped the topic and Sid headed home. Mel got dressed and headed over to James’ house. After knocking it took all the self-control not to think back to the other day. James was quickly at the door, but he winced at the brightness of the outdoors.

“Come in! Come in!” He pulled Mel in and shut the door hard behind him.

“You feeling okay?” she asked quietly.

“I feel like shit” he said walking to the couch. “I’m glad you’re here though.

The next day Mel decided to head to the morning skate to show solidarity for her teammates. There were a few cat calls when she walked in though. Her attempt at wearing a scarf to cover up the hickeys on here neck failed.

“What were you up to?!” Dustin Jeffery asked when she walked past him.

“Getting more than you do!” she replied. The whole room roared with laughter.

Soon the rest of the boys were on the ice and she had the chance to watch from the seats right behind the bench. Sidney soon joined her. He instantly saw her hickeys and squinted in confusion.

“Hey” she said putting her feet up on the glass.

“Don’t ‘Hey’ me”. He said scoffing,

“What?” she asked crossing her arms defensively.

“Those are from Nealer aren’t they?” he asked frustrated.

“Look. Sid—“

“No, you look. Don’t play with me. How can you kiss me then go over and do…whatever you did with him?”

“Can we not do this right here?” She whispered. He pursed his lips and walked down to the runway. She followed in suit.

“Sid, He’s just….he’s Nealer. I think I’m always going to have some special place in my heart for him. There’s just something about him.”

“Sureee. Date the piece of shit that cheats on you. Fucking typical!”

“You have no room to talk. At least I date!”

“Yeah douchebags. I’m not jealous of that. I at least have standards.”

“I have standards Sid.”

“It doesn’t seem like it. How can you….he just….who was the one holding your fucking hand when they cut the baby from you? Who didn’t even show up when it was his kid?! That’s why you always get hurt. You settle for pricks and you don’t notice the decent guys right in front of you!”

Mel knew he was right. Guys only treated her like shit because she let them. She hung her head and cried into her palms. Sid felt bad, but she needed to hear it. Instead of cutting her below the belt he came over and wrapped her in his arms.

“What do I have to do for you to notice me?” He mumbled into her dark hair.
