Breaking the Ice

Neuf

Mel obliged and Kris led her outside of the restaurant. They stood outside on the empty patio. It was a cold, cloudy day and everybody wanted the comfort of the large Victorian fireplace inside.

“What’s up, Tanger?” Mel asked throwing her hoodie over her head.

“Look I know you and Nealer are like a thing now, but be careful. He’s not the most committed guy and—we all care about you.”

“What do you mean he’s not the most committed?” Mel asked crossing her arms and furrowing her eyebrows. She knew exactly what he meant.

“He’s cheated on exes in the past. I just don’t want you to get hurt” he said pulling his beanie further down on his head.

“Thanks Kris” she forced a smile and gave him a hug. She walked back into the café and winced just a little bit when James put his arm around her. She made sure he wouldn’t see it, but Pascal did. He raised an eyebrow, but she shook her head silently telling him not to say anything about it.

They left a hefty tip and headed to their respectful homes. Melissa spent the rest of her day cleaning and organizing her condo before taking her dog Lucky out for a walk. She did some yoga and instagramming before heading to bed.

The next day she woke up early for morning skate and she felt good. It was a little awkward being in the locker room again, but she was a little hopeful that things would improve. Dan gave her a hard pat on the shoulder as she skated by him.

She and James tried to keep their affection to themselves and nobody really caught on.

They separated to take naps in their own beds. Warmups passed quickly and Melissa was more than ready to start the game. She was playing on the third line due to the addition of Iginla and Morrow, but it didn’t matter. She just wanted to play her gritty game as usual. She was on the bench watching as Sid took a slaphot to the face. She jumped up after seeing it and he skated off the ice. Even though she hated him She didn’t want him to hurt or out of the lineup. The rest of the game was a blur and they won, but internally she wanted to burn the cursed blue jerseys.

She went home with James and they spent the night cuddling like they’d known each other forever. In the morning James woke up to the sound of Melissa racing out of the bed and her loud footsteps running to the bathroom. It was obvious she began throwing up and he sleepily rushed to her side and pulled her hair up.

“You okay honey?” He asked rubbing her back.

“I just don’t feel good.” she said through labored breaths. After a few more minutes of vomiting she brushed her teeth a few times and got dressed.

“Did you eat something weird yesterday? Do you think it was from that French place?”

“No. What I ordered wasn’t too weird or anything.” She said pulling her hot pink bodycon dress over her head. It was a rare sunny day in Pittsburgh and she was dying for it to feel like spring. It didn’t yet so she was forced to wear warm tights under the dress. The two drove over to UPMC in James’ car to see Sid. After asking for his room the nurse let them in. Flower, Duper, Kuni, Geno and and Beau were already in the room talking to him. He was writing his answers down on a memo pad since he couldn’t talk yet.

“Hey.” Melissa said quietly, ininentionally clearing the room. She looked at James and he thought he should leave them alone for a bit too.

Sidney wrote “Hi” on his little yellow legal pad.

Melissa felt terrible and decided to sit in the armchair next to his bed.

“Are you in a lot of pain?”

He made a so-so motion with his head and shrugged.

“Look, Sid. I’m sorry.” She began staring at the floor.

“Why” he wrote, giving her a confused look.

“I over reacted. I hit you. And I threatened to leave and I’m really sorry. And not just because you got hit in the face with the puck.” She began to tear up.

“No. Don’t cry. I’m sorry. I was the jerk.” he wrote.

He showed her the pad before opening his arms for a hug. Melissa felt good after letting things with Sid go, but she began to wonder why she was so emotional. After their embrace she opened the door and the guys came back in and told him some jokes. Dan Potash even came in with some flowers for him. James held Melissa’s hand as they walked to his car and even though she was a bit worried some of the guys would see, but she didn’t let go. James was going out to dinner with a few of his friends later that night so he dropped Mel off at home.

She sent Vero an alarming text and she was over within minutes. When Vero texted that she had arrived Mel leaped off the couch and to the door.

“What the hell?!” Vero exclaimed walking right past Melissa.

“Vero, I’m scared. “ Melissa mumbled.

“Okay so I brought the test. Go, go go!” Veronique shoved the stuck in Melisa’s face and pushed her into the bathroom.

“How do I do it?” she asked embarrassed.

“The easiest way is to pee in the cup then dip the spongy end of the stick in it for 30 seconds. Then wait like three minutes.” She explained with her arms crossed and leaning against the door.

“Okay….” After doing what Vero said she walked out of the bathroom. Now it was time to wait.

“What if I’m-“

“You don’t have to worry about that until you know for sure” She said, stressfully pulling her hair into a bun. She sat in the middle of the couch while Melissa paced.

Once the little hourglass stopped spinning, Veronique picked up the stick, then froze.

“What? What does it say!?” Melissa panicked.

“On My God.” She thought she was going to faint. She sat on the couch next to Vero and stared at the little test between her hands. After a few minutes of silence Vero finally asked what she was going to do.

“There’s only one thing I can do” Mel replied, snapping out of her daze.

“That’t not so clear to me Mel”

“I have to have an abortion. I just have to.” Veronique was opposed to the idea, but Mel wasn’t the average woman. She was in the prime of her career and the father….Vero didn’t even know who the father was.

“Well, you haven’t even told me who you’ve been seeing. Maybe you could have him go with you and-“

“Fuck..” Melissa groaned kicking the coffee table.

“What?”

“It’s….James’.”

“Okay, so how long have you been-“

“No. I mean….Nealer.” Vero sat very still and wide-eyed.

“When did you… are you two…”

“During the lockout, you know that little party I threw? Well we uh, we hooked up. We’re dating now, but we haven’t exactly made it public.”

“Wow. Are you..going to tell him?”

“I don’t see why I need to. I’m just going to get this overwith.”

“No, you need to tell him. He can be there for you.”

Melissa obliged and tried to hold back tears. Vero embraced her. Mel made a phone call to the team’s doctor and told him what was going on. As awkward as the conversation was and as inexperienced he was in the subject he said he’d have one of his friends come in and take a look at her. Depending on if she was far enough along she might be able to have the procedure done the next day. He said he would tell Dan it’s just a regular check up and that she would have to tell him the truth when she goes through with it since she’d have to be out of the lineup for a game or two.

Very felt terrible and tried to get her mind off of it. They began watching The Voice and then in turn doing some Karaoke. James opened the door while they were in the middle of Lil Wayne and Drake’s “She Will”. They both laughed at he weird look he gave them when he heard what they were singing.

“Yes, James. This is what we do when you boys are gone.” Vero smiled, grabbing her bag. She gave her friend a tight hug before leaving.

“Tell him.” She whispered.

Mel turned and set her phone on the iHome in the kitchen. She turned on spotify and Video Games by Lana Del Rey came on.

“You have fun?” She asked James.

“Yeah, we had some drinks, saw the Steelers game, caught up. It was a good night.”

“Good.” James stood at the entrance of the kichen and stared at his girlfiend.

“Is something wrong?” He asked. She shook her head and pulled him close to her.

“Dance with me,” she said turning the volume up. He looked at her quizzically, but put his hands on her hips. She pressed her head up against his chest.

“Babe, what are you doing? Something’s going on-“

She “shhhed” him loudly.

“I just want to enjoy this for a while” she mumbled as the slowly stepped from side to side. He let her enjoy the song before he started feeling wetness on his chest.

“Mel-“

“I’m pregnant.” She blurted out. She stared at the tiny fibers in his shirt.

“Wha-“

“I’m pregnant and it’s yours. I’m having—an abortion.” James held her an arms length away and begged her to look him in the eyes.

“But-“

“I can’t play pregnant James” she exlplained. “I have no choice.”

“You could always take some time away”

“As if you’re ready to be a father.”

He just kind of stood silently knowing she was right.

“Just, please come with me tomorrow. Doc’s gonna call in a friend who can do it for me if I’m far along enough.”

“Okay. What time?”
“Eleven” she said turning off the music.

“Okay. I have a radio interview at 8, so I’ll be there after.”

“Thank you.” She hugged him and got ready for bed. They laid in bed quietly until he broke the silence.

“Are you SURE this is what you want to do?” She took a deep breath and thought it over once more.

“Yes” she cried. His arms were around her until she stopped. When she woke up he was gone and she quickly got decent so she could get it over with.
