The One Night That Changed My Life Forever

What?

"You ready Rach?" I heard Pat calling as he came through my apartment door.
""I'll be right there." I yelled back fixing my dress and stopping to look at the picture of Iz on my dresser. It was the picture of her, Pat and I with the Stanley Cup. Just looking at it, and the happiness on her face almost brought me to tears.
"Babe we can't be late to this." Pat said coming in my room, stopping when he saw what I was looking at.
"Alright let's go." I said grabbing my coat.
"We all miss her. It'll be alright." Pat said placing his hand on my leg as he drove.
"I know. It's just hard. I'll be fine I'm just worried about Beccs. What is she going to do now? She's staying at your place right?"
'I have no clue. I think she's going to need time to process things. But yah she called to see if she could."
"When's she moving in?"
"July 2nd. I'm going to stick around and help her bring some stuff in, and to make sure she's all set for the summer, then I'm heading home."
"I can't believe I'm leaving in three days. This is going to suck." I exclaimed.
"It's just a couple months. But yes this is going to be tough. Promise to visit after your camp is over." He said pouting.
"Well I promised your mom a visit. So I guess I have too."
"Yes! Thanks mom." He said exclaiming like a kid. I just shook my head and focused my gaze back on the road. The service was being held at a cute chapel. It was right inside the cemetery Izzy would be buried in. There wasn't too many people there, seeing as Beccs was a single mom. However a few family members had come, and some of Izzy's friends showed up as well. I was surprised to see most of the Hawks team there as well. The service was well done, and very emotional. Even some of the guys, Pat included were seen shedding a few tears.
"Hey Beccs how are you doing?" I asked giving Rebecca a hug.
"It's hard loosing your child. But I'm staying strong for her. It's what she wanted." Rebecca said returning the hug. "I can't thank you and Pat enough for everything."
"Don't worry about it. We enjoyed the time we spent with Iz, and as for the apartment why not get some use out of it over the summer?"
"Well thanks again." She said a slight smile reaching her face.
"I'm so sorry Beccs." I said giving her another hug before letting her interact with her family.
"Jonny I thought you were heading back to Winnipeg. " I said coming to stand beside Jon.
"I wouldn't miss this. I changed my flight to the same as yours, so I could stay for this. The whole team loved this little girl." He said smiling sadly.
"It means a lot Jonny." I said smiling. "Too bad Amanda had to head back home huh?"
"Yah, but I'm going to head to Ottawa later on in the summer after your training camp's over."
"Sweet!" I said smiling. "Hey guys." I said to the boys making their ways over.
"Hey Rach. How's it going?" Sharpie asked.
"Been better. But ok. Thanks."
"It get's better kiddo. You ready to make Team Canada, and join us at the Olympics in 4 years?"
"I hope. It's going to suck having to wait for the results though. I can't believe we have to wait into the Fall before finding out the team." I said pouting.
"Kiddo. You've already made the team. Your the best player I've seen in a while and thats just at practices. You make us work during the scrimmages, they'd have to be idiots not to take you."
"Agreed!" A bunch of guys said nodding their heads.
"Well thank you for the vote of confidence. It means a lot. Now I think we have to go out to the grave site." I said grabbing Pat. We walked hand in hand surrounded by the Blackhawks and family members.
"… I want to thank everyone who made Izzy's last few months on earth the happiest she's ever had. She wouldn't stop talking about you guys." She said looking at the guys. "Ever since you guys just came and hung out and played video games she's always looked up to you. The way you took her in and made her feel like she belonged was amazing. That first game she went to was her dream come true and I want to thank you guys for making her the happiest girl. I also want to thank Rachel Carson, and Pat Kane, for everything they have done over the past half a year. Rachel, ever since she saw you in that mall she fell in love with you. I know you saw her as a sister, and believe me she felt that way too." She said smiling. "You gave her more than the autograph she wanted, you gave her a reason to fight and to live. You are an amazing friend and an amazing woman, I thank you for everything you've done. And Patrick, you surprised me. You were so great to my daughter and she loved you. Every game day she'd be like 'Mom! Turn on the TV we have to watch Patrick play.' You made her happy and she loved you. So thank you." I squeezed Pat's hand before taking my spot beside Rebecca.
"All of you might not know me, but I'm Rachel. I can still remember the day this little girl came up to me in the food court and asked for my autograph. I was a nobody, yet she wanted to meet me. Iz and I instantly fell in love. We had great times together, and she was the best sister anyone could have asked for. From just hanging out to Stanley Cup victories, we had fun I'm going to miss seeing her smiling face everyday, but I will cherish the moments we shared. I want to thank Rebecca for raising such a wonderful daughter. I learned so much from her. We all did." I said looking at all the guys. I'm really sorry it had to end this way, but I know she will always be there looking down on you. I love you both." I said brushing away a few tears and heading back to the guys. Izzy's casket was placed into the ground. Beccs took out her Hawks jersey and placed it in the grave along with her. We each threw in a flower, before they started filling in the grave. It was beautiful. Everyone had brought flowers and plants to place around the gravestone. The stone was traditional, but on the back there was a picture of Iz with the guys for dinner, and the one with her, Pat, and I with the cup. There was one with her and Beccs as well. It read 'My dream come true'.
"Hey Rach. This is for you I forgot to give it to you earlier." Beccs said handing me a sealed envelope. I looked at her confused. "It's from Izzy. She said for me to give it to you after she was gone.
"Thanks Rebecca. I'm going to save this until I get home. I'm already too emotional here."
"Well I'm going to say bye, and good luck as I won't see you again for a while. Keep in touch though."
"Sure thing Beccs! And if you ever need anything don't hesitate to call." I said giving her a hug, before saying my goodbyes to everyone and heading back home with Pat.
"Well I'm ready to sleep the rest of the day." I said making my way to my apartment.
"I know what you mean. This kind of stuff takes a toll out of you huh?"
"Yah it really sucks. You staying or heading home?"
"I'll stay for a bit, but I have some stuff to do. I'll come back tomorrow to help you pack though."
"Alrighty, thanks. Want to watch a movie or something?" I asked unlocking the door.
"Sure, why not. Then I'll let you get to your sleeping." He said winking.
"Perfect you put in a movie and I'll get some snacks." I said making my way into the kitchen. I grabbed some party mix and some chips along with a couple drinks from the fridge and made my way back out. Pat had a random movie in the tv. I wasn't to worried about what it was, I was just in it for the company. "You know I'm going to fall asleep on you right?" I asked laughing.
"I figured. I'll take you back to your room after." He said laughing as well.
"Awe thanks." I said snugging in and resting my head on his lap. To my surprise I woke up in the same spot a few hours later. I laughed when I saw Pat had fallen asleep too.
"Eghh I fell asleep diidn't I?" Pat said stretching his arms.
"Yes you did." I said laughing as I looked up at Pat from my position.
"At least it was enjoyable for you. I normally don't sleep sitting up. Not quite the comfiest." He said laughing.
"Hey don't knock my couch. It's quite comfy." I said getting up and patting my couch."
"Haha it's not bad for a student budget." He said winking.
"Eh! I have some money otherwise I wouldn't be living here right now. I was quite the worker when I was younger."I said laughing.
"I bet. But now you have hockey, and me." He said winking.
"Well in 2 days it's going to be all hockey baby!" I said winking.
"Man I'm being dumped for hockey, and it's my sport." He said pouting.
"Yesy, yes it is. But it's also mine hopefully. I honestly don't know where I'll end up."
"We'll make it work. Don't worry" He said squeezing my shoulder and leaning in for a quick kiss.
"I know. It's just going to suck being apart." I said pouting.
"We will see each other after your camp is done, then we will just have to take it day by day."
"Yeah! Can't wait to see Momma Kane and the girls again." I said laughing. "And of course Poppa Kane."
"Haha yah. I see what you are doing." He said shaking his head. "I guess I'll have to impress you, make you come for me." He said winking.
"Oh really?"
"Yup."
"You could always come up and see me ya know." I said laughing.
"I could. But you coming down is soooooo much better." He said tickling me. "Say you are going to come, say it." He said laughing.
"Nope." I said in-between tickles. "Fine!" I said not being able to bear it any longer. "But remember you won it unfairly." I said smirking.
"Hmm, maybe this will win you over." He said giving me a sweet kiss.
"I think that just might work." I said smiling. "How am I going to go a month without that." I said pouting.
"I don't know it's going to be torture." He said laughing.
"What we do for hockey." I said winking.
"So you coming? For me this time?" He said excited.
"Ummmm, I don't know. It's close." I said winking. This time the kiss lasted a bit longer. "So you staying over tonight or going home?" I said noticing the time.
"I don't know. Are ya coming for me?" He said smirking.
"Oh Pat, using your ways of persuasion to convince a woman to come home with you huh?"
"Is it working." He said laughing.
"You suck you know that. I was always coming back for you." I said shaking my head.
"Great. Now that that's settled I guess I can do this." He said kissing me again.
"You think so huh? What if I don't want too." I said smirking. "i'm kind of mad at you right now." I said laughing.
"I guess I'll just have to change that now won't I?" He said
"I think so." I said nodding.
"You know you can't stay mad at me for long." He said winking, and lifting me up.
"I'm not too sure about this time. I mean forcing me to come visit you instead of the other way around? What's with that?" I said shaking my head.
"Not my fault. You promised my momma!" He said winking and setting me down on my bed. "And you don't break promises." He said smirking knowing he was right.
"I could never. you got me." I said lying back.
"Eghhh this next month is going to be so hard." He said
"Oh yah why's that? " I said smirking.
"Because I can't do this." He said kissing me. "And this." He said moving down to my neck. "And this." He said continuing his assault.
"Hmmm. I guess I can't do this either huh?" I said kissing him back, and playing with his shirt.
"Nope. Have fun with that." He said winking.
"Ugggh don't remind me." I said groaning.
"I guess I'm going to have to leave a long-lasting impression huh?"
"You better." I said laughing.
"That I can do." He said flashing his grin.
"Fuck, what am I going to do in Winnipeg. This just makes it so much harder." I whined lying next to Patrick a few hours later.
"You are going to skate your ass off, stay in shape, and make the damn team." He said laughing.
"I guess. Plus Jonny's going to be there, so I have a friend!" I said sounding super excited.
"Eghhh Captain Serious gets you and I'm stuck with my sister's" He said pouting.
"He does not get me, you goof. I don't even know when I'm going to have time do things other than hockey and sleep. Plus you know you love going back to Buffalo." I smiled.
"Fine. I know I miss the fam." He said smiling back.
"See you'll be fine." I said winking. "Now let's get some sleep in if we are going to get anything done.
"Eghhh it's your second last night. This is going to suck." he whined. "Sweet dreams Rach." He said snuggling in close.
"Night Pat." I said and fell asleep to the sound of his breathing.
"Ready for your last night in Chicago?" Pat said laughing as we got back from spending the day together down town.
"Yup. What's the plan?"
"Well the guys wanted to take you out. So we are going out." He said shrugging.
"Alright! Sounds fun. Plus it will be nice to say bye to the guys before I go!"
"Alright go get ready." He said. "I'll be back in an hour to pick you up." He said smiling.
"Ok. But an hour? Really?"
"Yes. One hour. Now go." He said shaking his head and heading out the door laughing.
I actually didn't need the whole hour as all I needed to do was curl my hair, and put on some makeup and a dress. I was ready before Pat even got here so I sat on the couch and flicked through the channels.
"You know Pat if you are going to set up a time limit it usually means you have to follow it." I said laughing as he came through the door five minutes late.
"Oh shush. Like you've never been late. It's like five minutes."
"Haha. Your lucky this is my last night." I said winking and following him out of the door. The guys were all waiting at the club, in the VIP section drinks in hand. This was going to be a fun night to watch, I thought to myself.
"Boys! Thank you for throwing the non- partier a party, so thoughtful of you." I said curtsying in front of the already semi intoxicated boys.
"Rach! Why are you leaving tomorrow?" Corey whined.
"Cause I got to go kick some girls asses Crow!" I said laughing.
"I guess that's acceptable. Don't forget about us though!" He said pouting.
"Never!" I gasped.
"Now boys, next rounds on me." I said laughing.
"That's a pretty good apology. But nahhhhhhh, we are good." Shaw said slightly slurring a bit.
"Fine. Don't say I didn't offer." I said laughing at the guys. The night went on like this. Everyone always seemed to have a drink in their hand at all times. I opted out was I did not want to show up at training camp with a massive hangover. Around 1:30 I said my goodbyes and headed home. I told Pat to stay and enjoy himself as I was just going to sleep and then grab my flight to Winnipeg early in the morning. We said our goodbye's and promised to keep in touch, and then I made my way home to my bed. The sleep was delightful, and much needed.
I woke up the next morning to silence. El was in the kitchen making some breakfast, before Jonny came to pick me up. "Hey, what's for breakfast?" I asked making my way down the hall suitcase in hand.
"Coffee. And an omelette just the way you like it." She said smiling.
"Perfect. I'm going to miss you bestie! " I said giving her a hug and wolfing down the food on my plate. "So good! I can't believe I have to leave already!" I said as Jonny texted me to tell me he was downstairs.
"Bye Girl! I'll come up and visit when you get back to London." She said smiling.
"Thanks El. And thanks for the coffee." I said laughing as I made my way out the door and onto the elevator.
"Here. Let me take that." Jon said quickly stealing my suitcase and putting it in the trunk of the cab.
"Thanks, Jonny. What's up why do you look like crap?"
"Nothing. Just tired that's all."
"Pat get home ok?"
"Hmm?"
"Pat. Did he get home ok?"
"Oh sorry. I think so." He said shrugging.
As we were boarding the plane I got a text from El. I decided to wait until we were seated before looking at it. I grabbed my seat by Jonny, wondering why he was being so quiet all of a sudden. I looked at the text, and at the picture accompanying it.
"Jonathan Bryan Toews!" I said punching him in the shoulder. "What the fuck is this?" I said showing him the picture.
"Honestly, I don't fucking know. I would love to know that as well."
"So you are telling me you didn't know about this?"
"Well… I did see them talking and then I saw them leaving but I kind of hoped it wasn't the way it looked. "
"And this?" I said pointing to the text I had just received from Pat's phone.
"That fucking idiot. I'm going to kill him." Jon growled taking out his phone. I was beyond mad but there was nothing that could be done about it now, the plane was taxiing and phones had to be shut off. So much for this being a great month I thought to myself.
"Rach." Jon said sadly.
"Not right now Jonny. Do you mind if I sleep on your shoulder?" I replied obviously upset.
"Go for it. I'll wake you up when we land." He said pulling me in so I could sit back comfortably.
"Thanks Jonny." I smiled up to him and closed my eyes.
"Rach. Girl you gotta get up. We are landing." Jonny said gently shaking me, and waking me up.
"Eggghh! Please tell me this is all a dream. Please Jonny! Please say this is just like what happened at the Olympics."
"I don't know what to say. How about we go chill at my place for a few hours then I can drive you over to the camp. We can talk there ok?" He said throwing his arm around my shoulders and bringing me in for a hug.
"Can we just get out of here please? People are staring, and I can't take it anymore." I said grabbing my suitcase.
"Come on! David's picking us up." Jon said putting his head down and leading me out of the airport.
"Hey lil Bro!" Jon exclaimed as we hopped in the car.
"How was Chicago can I see the new rings? Hey Rach."
"Hi." I responded lacking emotion.
"Don't ask." Jon exclaimed as his brother went to talk to me again. " Sure here have a look." He said pulling out the ring from his carry on. Yes that had been fun explaining to custom why we had a hugely expensive ring with us. Obviously they hadn't been hockey fans.
"Sorry David, I'm just not having a great day. I shouldn't take it out on you. Thanks for picking us up." I said forcing a smile.
"Wanna talk about it?"
"Honestly no. Sorry. You'll hear all the details from your brother soon enough." I chuckled. Obviously Jonny had texted ahead as his mom swooped me into a huge hug as soon as I stepped in the door.
"Lets go have a little chat honey." She said squeezing my shoulder and leading me to the living room.
"I'll see you later Jon." I smiled weakly as him and his brother took off upstairs to play xbox I was assuming.
"How are things Andrée?" I asked sitting down on the couch.
"I'm good. But tell me how are you doing? Jon told me the basic idea about what happened."
"Honestly I feel like complete crap. I didn't expect this at all, and on my last night in Chicago?" I said feeling the tears starting to form that I had held in so long.
"Has he texted you?"
"Nope, nothing. I did get a lovely picture this morning though. Made my friggin day." I said upset.
"I don't know what to say. Other than that boy is in love with you. Maybe it isn't what it looks like?"
"Andrée there is a picture. How is it not?" I said showing her the picture on my phone, and the picture El sent me.
"What are you going to do?"
"I'm going to skate my butt off, make this team and head back home for the rest of the summer and then we will see. For now I'm focusing on hockey, though it's going to be awkward at camp when people ask me a whole bunch of questions about him."
"You'll get through it, you are a strong girl. You are welcome to come over anytime. The camp is only a short drive away and we wouldn't mind having you over for a few dinners, and some weekends." She said smiling.
"You know I can't resist. I love it here." I said giving her a hug.
"Great! Just text Jonny when you want to come. And sweetie you know it's alright to cry, even if it's over a guy." She said squeezing my shoulder.
"I know. I will be. My brain just needs to comprehend what is happening first."
"You call if you need anything! Alright? Now go find Jonny and hang out for a while before you have to leave." She said smiling as she stood up from the couch.
"Thanks. You are a great mom. Your sons are lucky to have you." I said giving her a hug before heading up to Jonny's room.
"Hey what's up?" He said looking up from his phone.
"Nothing. I just feel so lost." I said.
"Come here girl. You need a hug." He said inviting me to join him on top of his bed. He let me rest against his chest and just slowly cry.
"Thanks Jonny, for being the best." I said looking up at him, probably looking as terrible as I felt. "You know he probably doesn't even realize I know." I blubbered.
"Probably not." Jon said shaking his head. "Plus there's no way she didn't delete the picture after sending it."
"He'll figure it out soon enough." I said quietly.
"He better! And that Damn kid better apologize or I'm going back to beat the damn apology out of him."
"Aren't you two like best friends? I don't want you to do that, I'll be fine."
"I thought we were, and I won't wouldn't look good in the media." He said winking.
"Don't text him, and don't do anything stupid Jon. I'm serious captain serious so you should understand. I don't want you getting involved!" I said with a serious face.
"I won't, I promise. But if you ever need me you know where to find me ok?"
"I know Jon, your mom's already planning weekend plans downstairs. She also said you are my taxi so sorry in advance." I said.
"She would be." He said shaking his head. "Lets get you out of her and to that Team Canada thingy." He said laughing.
"Let me fix myself up a little then we can go. I don't want this" I said pointing to myself " to be my first impression!" I said grabbing my purse, and heading to the bathroom. I wasn't as bad as I expected but, I did have a bit of work to do. I brushed my hair and put it up into a messy bun, before putting on a coating of makeup (waterproof) and covering up my slightly puffy eyes. When I was done I looked tired, but that was ok with me.
"Ready?" Jon asked as I came out.
"Yup." As ready as I'll ever be." I smiled sadly.
"Play hockey, and forget about everything else. Remember what you are here for, and kick some but." He said winking as we headed to the car.
"Thanks Jonny! I'm already going to be a huge hit after you walk me in." I said laughing.
"See I missed that laugh. Try not to think about it too much, make some new friends and have some fun."
"I'll try Jonny. I'll try. " I said as we got on the road.
"You better play your best. I'm going to stop by a couple practices, and help out with a few. Sorry about not telling you that." He said laughing.
"Wait! We get to play together again?"
"Yup. Q wanted me to keep and eye on you, plus they wanted me to come take a look anyways cause they heard I was going to be around. I guess this three time Stanley cup Champion is pretty good at hockey" He said grinning.
"Sweet. I need a friend right now" I said. "But tell Q I don't need an escort" I said shaking my head.
"Hey I can't argue with the Coach." He said shrugging "Plus he wanted to see how you played, he didn't know anything about the whole situation back in Chicago."
"I guess that's fine." I said sighing.
"You ready? It's going to be cool to meet some of the olympians huh?"
"Are you kidding it's freakin' awesome. I hope Hayley comes out to some practices!" Yah most of the former olympians aren't coming till the last half of camp. The older ones should be here in a week or so to help you guys."
"You know how many spots are open? Obviously they aren't getting rid of any of the gold medalist squad unless they retire."
"At least two, but you are right. It's going to be tough, you all are fighting for those spots. They aren't changing the rest of the team anytime soon like you said."
"Damn, and there is like 30 of us fighting for two spots."
"You are making the team Rach, no doubt in my mind."
"Thanks. I needed that." I said smiling.
"You ready to kill this?" He said pulling into the parking lot.
"Fuck yeah! Pat ain't ruining this for me." I said shaking my head.
"Good. Now get your sorry ass out of the car and get in there and show them what you are made of." He said smiling as we both got out of the car.
"Trying to get rid of me Jonny?"
"Nah. I just know you will find peace out on that ice. That's what you need right now." He said smiling knowingly.
"Damn, I always needed a friend like you. Where were you in high school?" I said grinning and punching him lightly on the shoulder as we walked into the housing building beside the arena.
"I've been here my whole life! Where were you miss London Ontario?" He said laughing.
"Haha very funny."
"What number is your room?"
"818"
"We have a bit of a way to go then, I'm guessing you are at the end. We are at 800."
"Perfect. Thanks for taking my suitcase."
"Hey it's no problem. Doesn't weigh anything." He said winking.
"818, is right here." I said pointing to the room I would be spending the next month in.
"You got your key?"
"Yup. I put it in my purse as soon as I got it in the mail. I loose things to easily" I said shaking my head and grabbing out the room card. The room was a nice size, with two double beds and a bathroom just like at a hotel. It looked like I was going to have a room mate, though she must be in the bathroom I thought to myself.
"Bed's pretty comfy." Jon said jumping onto my bed and lying back huge smile on his face.
"EWWW now that bed has cooties!" I said making a face.
"At least their mine!" He said shaking his head in disbelief.
"I know I was just kidding Jonny. I know you don't have cooties." I said joining him on the bed. "It is pretty comfy huh?"
"It's good. You will be sleeping a lot. You ready to get back on the ice tomorrow?"
"Yes! I'm tired of workouts" I pouted.
"You are such a girl!"
"I am." I said winking.
"Goodness. Pat's an idiot. You are amazing." He said laughing.
"Glad you think so Jonny. Thanks for being the bestest best friend in the world! Well atleast Canada." I said winking. "You sticking around for a bit?"
"Just want to make sure your roommate is normal." He said laughing as I rolled my eyes and snuggled in and turned on the TV.
"So you excited to head up to Ottawa in a month?"
"Yah! I still haven't met her parents and apparently they are excited to meet me." He said shrugging.
"Anyone would you goof. Stop in and say hi to us on your way up, my family would love to meet you too even if we aren't dating." I said laughing.
"How about I hit you guys up on my way back to Chicago?"
"Sweet! I'll have missed you after a month I think." I said winking " But you should totally tell me who my roomie is I know you know!" I said pouting.
"You get to wait your turn. I promise you'll like her. I've met her once or twice, so I'm not really an expert but I've heard only good things." He said smiling.
"Fine!" I huffed. "Omg she's totally coming in!" I said as I heard someone opening the door. I turned to Jonny and then back to the door.
"No freaking way!" I exclaimed. "Jonathan Bryan Toews! How could you not tell me?" I exclaimed as the girl started laughing.
"Jon, nice to see you again. Congrats on that gold medal of yours, and the Stanley cup I have been told. Impressive year Captain." She said winking.
"And you must be Rachel. I assume you know who I am."
"Yup. I was at the Olympics. I saw you get those two beauty goals to win the Gold in overtime."
"Sweet. Jon nice to see you again, but now us girls have a little meeting to attend." She said pointing at us.
"My cue to leave. Let me know when you are coming out and I'll pick you up! K Rach?"
"Thanks for everything Jonny. Tell your mom I'll be coming soon." I said winking and giving him a hug.
"Stay strong." He whispered before kissing my forehead and heading out of the room.
"Damn! Now I see why he wanted to stay." I said laughing as Marie took a seat on her bed. "So what's this meeting?"
"We have a few minutes. So you and Jonny a thing?"
"Nah. We are just great friends."
"That's cool. So what's your story?"
"Where do ya want me to start?" I said laughing.
"From the start duh!" She said laughing.
"Alright. I was born in London Ontario. I was born in January so I'm 23 and yes I know it's kind of old for me to just be trying out." I said laughing. "I played for the Canadian juniors team when I was younger, and then played varsity up at Ottawa. I took a year off and headed to Chicago to finish my last year of schooling. I met some of the Blackhawks then they realized I was good and invited me out to practice with them. Q took me in and improved my game tremendously, and got me into this camp. Jonny and I flew back up here together, and here I am." I said smiling.
"You and Jonny never dated at all?"
"Haha nope. I actually introduced him to his girlfriend Amanda." I said laughing.
"Sorry you two just seemed so happy and all that."
"I'm surprised. I must be pulling it off pretty good. I've actually been having a pretty shitty week. Good to know I had you fooled." I said smiling.
"Damn. That sucks. You sure had me fooled." She said shaking her head. "Hey your phones ringing."
"Ehhh I'm not really in the mood to answer it. Who is it?"
"Ummm some guy named Patrick?"
"Definitely not in the mood." I said motioning for her to put it back shaking my head slightly.
"Who is he? Boyfriend?"
"I don't know he's something." I said shaking my head smiling sadly.
"Let me guess he is one of the reasons your week has been crappy."
"Yup. He's definitely the latest mess I've had to deal with. Honestly guys are so stupid."
"Im guessing you guys are pretty serious?"
"Well we were. We have been dating since January, and I'd say it was pretty serious." I said shrugging.
"You know you can talk to me. I promise it won't leave the room. By the way he's texting you." She said nodding to the buzzing phone.
"Egghhhhh. Why?" I grumbled grabbing the phone and putting it on silent. "Doesn't he understand I'm furious and emotional right now?" I said shaking my head. "Anyways we were great and then on my last night in Chicago I left the club early to head home cause Jon and I were heading up here, and I did not need to be tired on my first night. So was it turns out he stuck around, obviously got himself drunk was seen being extra friendly with his ex and then the cherry on the cake is this morning she sends me a picture on his phone of him sleeping in his bed with nothing on. So my day has been pretty friggin spectacular, and now 8 hours after the fact he finally fucking calls. I'm so done with guys." I said shaking my head.
"Damn he sounds like a real dick!"
"That's the problem he isn't. He's just made one too many drunk mistakes I'm tired of it. Plus you probably know him." I said shrugging. "Want to answer this and be a real bitch to him? Pretend to be like the coach and say I'm not allowed any outside contact with the world?" I said laughing as Pat's name popped up on the screen again.
"Sure. I'm pretty sure I know who it is. I'll tell him no one is allowed phones, or outside contact until the end of camp. Pass me the phone." She said winking.
"HELLO?" She said into the phone?
"Who's this?"
"Patrick? Sorry I don't know who you are. Why are you calling?"
"That's alright. Wrong numbers suck have a great night."
"Dude thought he dialled the wrong number. Oh here he calls again" She said laughing.
"Yes?"
"Yes it's still me. Why may I ask are you calling?"
"Yes I know her, unfortunately the women are not allowed to have phones during the duration of the camp. That goes along with no outside contact as well."
"Yes, I can see why you think that's dumb Mr. Patrick whatever your name is. But unfortunately this is not your team, it's mine. So you have no say in what my girls do or don't do. I'm trying to create another championship squad. I'm sorry if that doesn't seem reasonable to you.
"It's fine. You didn't know who I was. Yes I can give her a message, but unfortunately she will not be able to respond as the girls are currently working out."
"Ok. I'll tell her. And who is this calling?"
"Ahh Patrick. Your friend Jonny was here earlier. Seems like a nice kid. Him and Rach seemed happy, anyways I'll tell her."
"Yup. They were both here earlier. Is that a problem?"
"No. Ok perfect. Goodbye Mr. Kane."
We both burst out laughing after she hung up the phone. "Well he seemed pretty jealous when I mentioned you and Jon together." She said laughing.
"Good. He deserves it." I said. "What did he want to say?"
"Well he wanted to know if you were mad over something, because you weren't answering his calls. Then he seemed to accept the whole no cell phone thing and kinda just left it at that. He wanted me to tell you he missed you, and he hoped you made it up ok."
"Next time he calls, you can tell him whatever you want. I don't even care anymore. Let's get going to that meeting, I've had enough ranting to last me a lifetime." I said chucking my phone on the bed and making my way to the door.
"Sweet! You're the only Olympian here yet! I've got the best roommate." I said laughing as we joined the rest of the girls, who decided to notice us as we walked in laughing.
"I could say the same thing. You play friggin amazing!" She said quietly as we found a spot at the back to sit.
"Thanks. I've always been a fan of yours." I said winking.
"Thank you girls for coming!" Coach said as she made her way to the front of the room. "As you can see there are thirty of you girls here, and I hope you all know what you are fighting for. After a month of seeing you play we hope to know concretely the girls we want to join our 2014/15 team. As stated before you will learn whether or not the spot is yours in the fall before the season starts. We will be playing in world championships, and in some games over the year. There obviously isn't as much for girls, Country wise but we do expect our girls to play hockey during the year even if it isn't for us. Normally it works out and you take a few days off through your regular season for a few of our games, and tournaments. If we choose you and you are for some reason not able to play with our team, don't be afraid to speak up. There's a lot of talent in this room, and we won't be upset if you feel like you have to decline our offer, though none of you probably will" She said smiling. "Now tomorrow we are going to start a little later as you girls are arriving from all over and look extremely tired. There is lot's of time tomorrow to meet and greet with everyone. For tonight I advise getting some sleep, seeing as it's already 8 Winnipeg time. You are expected to arrive at the rink for an 11:30 practice, and all your gear is already set up for you. Practices normally starts at 8:30 so don't get used to sleeping in. Alright, I'll see you all tomorrow. Have a great sleep, and I can't wait to see what you guys are made of. You are dismissed."
"Sleeeeeeeep!" I said excited.
"Yes. I need it!" Marie said as we walked back down to our room.
"I wish the girls would stop attempting to whisper that I don't belong here though" I whispered to Marie before we both burst out laughing.
"Oh. Girls" she said loud enough for them to hear her. "I wish I could play as good as you Rach. I mean you are fucking amazing on skates, and the way you can move those hands its impressive." She said smirking at the girls who had shut up and were now very intent on hearing our conversation.
"Thanks Marie. Too bad I couldn't catch up with you at the Olympics. That game winning goal was absolutely brilliant. Jon, Sharpie and Duncs were soooooooo happy when you guys won that game."
"Haha. Let Jonny know I felt the same about his game winning goal against the American's." She said laughing. So much for me not belonging as the pack of girls stopped talking all together and were listening eyes wide to our conversation.
"Yes?" I said addressing the blatant stares. "Whatever lets go, we've got a lot of catching up to do, it's been a few years since the last junior championship." I said as Marie and I smiled and walked past the girls and into our room, shutting the door before bursting out into laughter.
"They should really watch some youtube videos before saying you don't belong." She said shaking her head.
"So much for me making friends" I said laughing.
"Overrated." She said winking.
"I know right. They all seem kinda bitchy. Seriously I'm being judged already and they haven't seen me play. Unreal! I just have to prove I deserve that spot huh?"
"Damn right girlfriend. Plus you'd be great to play with! I can't wait!"
"Alright well I'm going to unpack a bit and then have a shower and head to bed. I'm super whipped from the time change and everything that's happened."
"Sounds great. I'm gonna hop into the shower after you, then we can chill and sleep a little." She said winking.
"Perfect. I'll be quick I said grabbing one of the Hawks shirts I guess I had packed and my pyjama shorts. I had a quick shower, washed my face and brushed my hair before chucking on my clothes for bed. I wish I hadn't brought this shirt, it made me remember. But it hurt too much to take it off so it stayed on.
"Damn girl. You smell like guy." Marie said shaking her head. "Let me guess you are angry and upset but not willing to let go yet?"
"It hurts so much. I forgot I packed the shirt and now I can't bring myself to take it off without crying." I said sadly.
"Hey! It's ok. You love him. It's not going to go away instantly. Give yourself the summer to figure things out for you, and then see what you want to do. Though you should talk soon." She said squeezing my shoulder and heading into the bathroom. I decided to text Jonny while I was waiting.
Me~~ Well day 1 was interesting ;)
Jon~~ What happened???
Me~~Well Pat called, and the girls hate me and don't think I belong…. :P
Jon~~ Bullshit you don't belong. What happened with the idiot?
Me~~Marie my new bestie at camp and only friend ;) Answered and pretended she was coach and tore a strip off his ass!
Jon~~Haha too funny. So pretty much he isn't going to be calling for a while?
Me~~ Yup. And he wanted to know if i was mad at first. Funny huh?
Jon~~ Hilarious. I'm rolling my eyes right now.
Me~~ Good. So you want to hang out on Saturday? I'm thinking Marie and I are going to need a break from these girls. I mean their like 18 and 19 and trash talking me in front of an Olympian who honestly thinks I'm better than her.
Jon~~Sure Saturday would be fun. Only five more days of training to go ;)
Me~~EGHHH Torture. Ahh well it's worth it. BTW PAt might be mad as Marie might have hinted you were making a move on me….sorry!
Jon~~That's actually perfect. That girl is genius, but sorry Amanda has my heart :P
Me~~ I'd hope so! Otherwise I'd be pissed off! I'll see you saturday then.
Jon~~ Prove those girls wrong. I'll actually see you Tuesday, and Thursday I believe,
Me~~ Yay! Awesome. Going to be a great help out here Captain Serious. Please work some of these girls extra hard, and work the bitch right out of them ;)
Jon~~Anything for you. Oh yah I'm texting Pat back saying I got invited to help out during the camp too…he's gonna be ticked.
Me~~ And I'm not. Anyways until he realizes that I know, and apologizes I'm not even going to worry about it. I miss him though Jonny.
Jon~~ I know you do. You will talk and get through this even if it takes forever, you two are honestly meant to be together forever.
Me~~ Not sure this time, but when he explains what happened if he ever does then I will listen. But until then I'm done worrying about it.
Jon~~ Get some sleep and play your game. I'll see ya soon girl. Tell Marie she's a fucking genius.
Me~~ Will do. Ps. She loved your goal against the Americans ;)
Jon~~ I'm guessing you mentioned I felt the same about hers?
Me~~ Of COURSE!! Night Jonny <3 <3
Jon~~ Night loser.
"Marie Jon says your a fucking genius!" I said laughing.
"I'll take it." She said smiling and making her way under her covers.
"Night!"" I said smiling before setting my alarm for 10. "Ten ok?"
"Yup. I have mine set to the same time." She said laughing as I turned out the light and went to bed. Maybe this month wouldn't be so bad after all I thought to myself as I snuggled under the covers, into the familiar smelling t-shirt and fell asleep.

Great job

Amazing job. Wasn't expecting him to have another kid from a different relationship in this story. Kudos for them for not resenting each other or the kid though. Great job
