The One Night That Changed My Life Forever

5 months

It's been five months. Five months since the accident that put Rachel in a coma. 5 months without a hug back, or a kiss goodnight. 5 months without hearing her voice. It's been six months since our wedding and one month since the C section birth of our son. Here I was talking to my mom over Skype rocking my newborn in my arms as Bella slept in the crib beside me.
"How's it going Pat? Any news?"
"Nothing. She's still stable, but nothing. Hockey's been good, miss having her on my line, but It helps take my mind of of things. Bella's growing up, and well little Patrick is a nuisance just like I was." I said chuckling.
"She's strong she'll get through it. Glad to see that smile again."
"Yah, it could have been worse but it still sucks you know. I only had her for a couple weeks as my wife and then the accident happened."
"We're just a call away."
"I know. Thanks mom." I said smiling.
"So you're birthday's did you like our presents?"
"Yes but I wanted my wife to wake up." I said.
"I hope you get that wish soon, maybe for her birthday. If she wakes up will she still have a spot on the team?"
"Yah, coach was devastated when he heard the news. That will not be the most important thing WHEN she wakes up."
"Alright well I've got to cook some supper. Let me know if you ever need help okay Patty."
"Thanks mom. Love you. Say hi to dad and the girls for me. Bye."
"Bye my Patricks. Bye Bella." My mom said smiling and waving over the screen, before the call went silent.

Jon's POV

FLASHBACK
I was meeting Patrick for breakfast. It was the off season and he had been busy with his wedding and his daughter so we hadn't seen much of each other since his wedding. We had a practice later today, first one since last season. Just like Pat to be late, I thought to myself as I sat at the booth waiting for him. After thirty minutes I decided I was done waiting. His phone went right to voicemail, meaning he was either sleeping or with Rachel. The little bugger stood me up, I thought to myself as I left a twenty on the table for my coffee and headed back home, to my fiancé. I complained to her about Patrick, something she was definitely used to, ate some breakfast and then made my way to the UC. Another season, and hopefully a successful one at that. That cup is ours again this year. Everyone arrived except Patrick and Rachel. Where the hell were they? It's the first practice and they are late! This is getting frustrating I thought as we all made it onto the ice everyone unsure of where they were.
"Coach, were are Pat and Rach?"
"I don't know." Q said furrowing his brow. "They didn't say anything to you?"
"Nothing. He was supposed to meet up fro breakfast but never showed."
"Well I'm sure they'll be here, now get to the drills boys. We are winning that cup this year, no more losing in the finals." Coach said blowing his whistle signalling the start of practice.
Halfway through the practice and they still weren't here. This was not like Pat, at least not since he met Rachel.
That's odd Stan never comes down during practices, I wonder what's up. Seems the rest of the team noticed his presence, and the look on Q's face. What the hell happened? Just then Q nodded, blew his whistle and motioned us over as Stan headed back up to the offices. Holy crap, the look on Q's face says it all, sadness written all over it.
"Coach. What the hell happened?" I exclaimed.
"Right well… I'm sure you've noticed a couple of your teammates are missing." He started. Holy shit! My mind started racing.
"Fuck. What happened." I muttered.
"Last night Rachel was in an accident. The driver lost control and crossed lanes and hit her head on. I don't know much, but she's not doing good. That was her mother calling. They just got here a few hours ago. Right so anyways I'm calling this practice." Coach said quickly.
A lot of profanities were dropped amongst my teammates and I. I skated right off the ice, changed in record timing got in my car and went to the hospital.
"Kane." I said to the nurse at the reception table.
"Level 3, room 271. I think she's in surgery right now, so it will be Level 2 hallway to the right."
"Thank you." I said running up the stairs instead of the elevator and following the directions she gave me.
Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! I thought to myself as I ran down the hallway, recognizing the crunched up figure down the hallway.
"Pat!" I exclaimed running up to the man who looked like complete shit and gave him a hug.
"What the hell am I going to do Jon if she doesn't make it?" He said crying into his hands.
"She'll make it she's strong."
"You didn't see her Jon. You didn't see the lifeless body going into surgery. Jon I can't loose her."
"I know neither can I. I can't believe I was pissed at you for ditching breakfast this morning. I should have been here." I exclaimed.
"Believe me. There was nothing you could have done. I tried." He mumbled scuffling his foot on the floor.
"Where's Bella?"
"Rachel's parents have her. They just went to grab a coffee."
"I'm sorry Pat. How long has she been in there?"
"Going on 3 hours. And I have no idea what is happening. I'm hoping it's a good sign that they haven't come out with any bad news yet though there have been a bunch of people running in and out of there. I just feel so helpless Jon. My whole life is in that room."
"I know." I said, not knowing what else to say. Minutes later everyone was there. Rachel's parents and the whole team, mulling around the waiting room just waiting for news.
"Patrick, can we talk to you for a minute?" A doctor came out, facial expression not giving anything away.
***********
Pat's POV
"Patrick, can we talk to you for a minute?"
"Yes." I said following the doctor into the room. "How is she?"
"Patrick you know she came into the hospital in critical condition?"
"God, she's not?"
"No she's not. The surgery was successful."
"But." I said sensing something was still not right.
"But, she is in a coma." The doctor stated.
"A coma." I said stuttering.
"Yes, but her conditions are stable and her body is working on its own for the most part. "
"Will she wake up?"
"She made it through the accident and made it through many dangerous surgeries and is still stable. I would be shocked if she doesn't wake up, I just don't know when she will."
"Shit." I muttered.
"That's not all."
"What else?"
"She's five months pregnant." He said straight forwardly.
"Holy crap! Is or was?" I said sadly.
"You'd think was, but the little boy is fine. If she carried him like normal he probably wouldn't have made it. I'm honestly surprised she's still alive after seeing the shape she came in last night, and to be stable right now is a miracle son."
"Thank you for saving her." I said smiling slightly at the doctor.
"You're wife is very strong. Now it's your turn to be strong for her. You can go see her in a few minutes. They brought her up to the room. Remember it could've been worse, stay positive, and stay strong." He said before leaving the room.
Oh god. Another kid. How am I going to explain that one. Oh hey your daughter is in a coma, doctors don't know when she's going to wake up. Oh right she's also five months pregnant, surprise! This should be fun I thought to myself as I made my way back to the waiting room.
***************
Jon's POV:
Pat and the doctor had been gone a long time and I wasn't the only one worried. Well he isn't crying, that's got to be a good sign right? I thought as Pat walked in and made his way over to Rachel's parents, who after a short conversation made their way out of the room, also not crying.
"So?"
"The surgery was successful, but she is in a coma." Pat said.
"Shit." Sharpie exclaimed.
"The doctors think there is almost no chance that she won't wake up, but as of now she is stable but unresponsive. She's room 271, level 3 if you want to see her." Pat said, and my team mates funnelled out of the room each giving Pat a hug before heading to the elevator.
"She looks terrible Jon." Pat said sitting down. I sat down beside him. "She's almost unrecognizable. Tubes everywhere, feeding her, monitoring her making sure she doesn't die. I couldn't stay in there."
"She's alive." I said hugging him.
"It doesn't look or feel like it seeing her lying lifeless on that bed." He said shaking his head.
"She'll wake up Pat. I know she will. She wouldn't leave you and Bella."
"Me, Bella, and Patrick the third." He said quietly.
"What?" I exclaimed eyes wide.
"Yah, just found out."
"How far along?"
"Friggin five months!" He exclaimed.
"Crap. He's fine? I mean she almost died."
"Apparently he's healthy and living. They did some imaging and tests. I thought that too when he told me."
"Damn. That's lucky." I said in amazement.
"I know. The doctor said it was a miracle that Rach was even alive, let alone with no harm to the kid."
"We'll get through it. She'll wake up soon."
"I hope so."
END FLASHBACK

That was five months ago, and still no change. I was currently sitting beside her bed, looking at my team mate and best friend lying on the bed she had occupied for 5 months straight. They had to operate on her for the birth of her and Pat's son as she still wasn't awake. One month later and she was still stable, but it seemed as if nothing had changed. Today had been an off day, Pat had been here in the morning with the kids just talking to her. He had left to get some things done, and I decided to stick around a bit longer. Rach was looking better, much healthier than that first day I had seen her. Pat had been right. She wasn't the same girl I had known. Now all her bones had healed the casts and machines down to one. Just the one feeding her was left alongside the heart monitor. She had never crashed, never wavered. Always the same regular heartbeat, but she never woke up. She missed Pat's birthday, the season opener, Christmas, and it was almost her birthday and the day her and Pat had first met.
"Holy shit!" I muttered. Was that what I thought it was? "IT MOVED!" I exclaimed running to get the doctor.
"I saw it. Her hand moved. Does that mean she's waking up?"
"It's a good sign yes. Get me when she opens her eyes. Until then just hold her hand, it will be good for her to see a familiar face after five months."
"Alright." I said. I would have to call Pat if she woke up I thought to myself. I made my way back into the room and pulled the chair over to the bed and held the hand of my best friend, and my other best friend's wife. I closed my eyes and rested my head while still holding her hand.
Who the hell are you?" Shit I swear I heard something, was I dreaming? I rubbed my eyes. Ughhh 2 o'clock.
"Excuse me."
"Holy Fuck!" I exclaimed jumping back eyes wide. "You're awake!" I exclaimed.
"And you didn't answer my question. Who are you?"
"Ahh shit." I said coming to the realization that she didn't know me. Fuck. "I'm Jon."
"Can I ask what you were doing beside my bed?"
"You've been in a coma for five months Rachel." I said going to get the doctor.
"She doesn't remember." I said.
"She suffered a huge trauma to her brain, it should work itself out over time." The doctor said.
"Right." I said walking back into the room.
"So can I ask what are you doing in the room of a five month coma patient?"
"You really don't remember do you?"
"Remember what?"
"Never mind." I said sighing. Atleast she's awake right?
"I've got to call Pat." I said to the doctor who nodded.
"Who's Pat? And where the hell is Mike?"
"Long story. Let the doctor do his tests." I said faking a smile and pulling out my phone to call Pat. This was going to be interesting.
*****************
Pat's POV:
Patrick Jr. had just fell asleep as I heard the ringing of my cellphone.
"Yah Jon what's up?"
"Mike? Who's Mike?"
"The hospital has a Mike on file, oh wait ya I know who the bugger is. Why?"
"They need me to bring him to the hospital. What the hell for?"
"Fine. I'll do it." I huffed shaking my head. "I literally just got the kids asleep."
"Yes, I'm going. Give Rach a kiss for me. ON THE FOREHEAD."
"Okay, see you soon. "
Oh goodness, this day couldn't end any quicker I thought bundling up Bella and the newborn and carrying them to the vehicle, and fastening them in place. Amazingly only Bella woke up and it was just for a few minutes before she settled back into her sleep. I drove over to Ellie and Brandon's place. I took the kids up to the door with me, and knocked.
"Yah Pat? What's up?" Ellie said opening the door.
"Favour to ask you."
"First can you look after the kids, second where does Mike work?"
"Yes, we can watch the kids for a few hours. Mike as in Rachel's ex mike?"
"That'd be the one." I said grimly. "Apparently someone at the hospital needs to talk to him or something. Jonny didn't really give me too many details."
"Well last I knew he still worked at Rach's old university. I think he's still there, but I haven't talked to him or seen him since the two of them broke up."
"Alright thanks for everything!" I said giving my kids a small kiss on each of their foreheads and handing Ellie the bag of supplies I had packed. "I'll be back soon!" I exclaimed running out the door and back to my car. I found myself back down memory lane, running up to the office building of Rachel's Chicago University.
"Mr. Kane to what do we owe your presence." The desk lady said smiling at me.
"I'm looking for Mike Harris. Does he still work here?"
"Yes, he does."
"Great can I talk to him?"
"I'll let him know you're here. Does he know you?"
"Mutual friends." I said shrugging.
"Okay." She said walking down and poking her head into a partially opened door. I could hear parts of the conversation.
"You know Patrick Kane?"

"No as in hockey legend."

"Well he's here to see you."

"Okay I'll let him in."

"You're good to go in." She said smiling and motioning me to head in.
"I'm sorry but do I know you, and why are you here?" A well looking man asked from behind the desk. Yup this was the guy my girlfriend cheated on me with.
"Uhh right, well I kind of need you to come with me." I said making a face.
"Why the hell would I do that?"
"A mutual friend of ours is in the hospital and well they need you. Believe me you wouldn't be there if it was up to me."
"So then why are you asking me to go?"
"Because the doctors want to talk to you for some friggin reason, so here I am."
"Is this a joke?"
"You think I'm joking? I exclaimed.
"Fine. Only because I know this isn't a kidnapping I'll humour you."
"Thank you." I said shaking my head and heading out to the lobby.
"How's your wife doing?" The desk lady asked.
"Still unresponsive but stable." I said. " Thanks for asking." I said with a slight smile.
"Hailey I'm going to be out of the office for the rest of the day, can you take my calls and forward any urgent messages on to me." Mike said grabbing his coat.
"You got a car?"
"Uhh yeah?" I said. "I've got a few."
"Right. Hockey player. Let's go then." The walk to my car was silent, almost as silent as the car ride to the hospital.
"So who is in the hospital. I sure as hell don't know you, or any of your friends."
"We'll see. Long story." I muttered.
"You don't like me do you?"
"Not one bit." I said agreeing with him.
"Alright then."
We pulled into the hospital parking lot in record speed, and I walked quickly into the hospital.
I was greeted with a cheery nurse.
"Ah Mr. Kane. Did you hear the news?"
"News?"
"About your wife?"
"Good or Bad?" I exclaimed frowning.
"Good. She woke up today."
"Are you being serious right now?" I exclaimed.
"Yes. Your friend Jon is up there now."
"Thank you!" I exclaimed motioning Mike to follow me into the elevator. Now why the hell did I have to bring this idiot with me? I thought to myself as the numbers got closer and closer to floor three.
"Jon!" I exclaimed with wide eyes. "She's really awake?"
"Yah." He said not as excited as me. "Mike?" He said looking at the guy behind me.
"Yes."
"Right well, the doctors want to see you in 271." He said.
"Alright." Mike said walking towards the door.
"What the hell man?" I exclaimed. "What's wrong with her?"
"She can't remember."
"Everything?"
"I don't know." Jon said shaking his head. "She went off at me when she first woke up and then asked where Mike was, so I think she's lost at least a couple years. The doctors said it should all come back, but who knows when."
"Fuck!" I exclaimed. "That means she doesn't even know me." I whispered.
"Never know." Jon said shrugging. "I've got to head out though, keep me updated. Oh and I called her parents for you."
"Thanks man. Wish me luck." I said my words laced with sadness as I turned and walked slowly towards the room.
*************
Mike's POV:
What the hell is happening? Apparently there is some hockey legend wanting to see me. Minutes later I was in his vehicle on my way to a hospital for who knows what. We had friends in common? Well his wife is awake, Im guessing that's who he's here to see. I still have no clue what this has to do with me. The guy we talked to must have been a hockey player too, you could tell by his muscular body.
"Right well, the doctors want to see you in 271." The muscular man said.
"Alright." I said and walked to the room knocking.
"Hello?" A doctor said sticking his head out.
"I'm Mike Harris. I have no idea why I'm here so…"
"Right." He said smiling. "Jon filled me in on the situation. Let's just say the man you just showed up with, his wife was in a horrific accident and she just woke up today from a five month coma. She's got a case of amnesia, and well she's looking for you. We thought it might be best to have you come and then introduce her back into her new life."
"Still, confused but alright. "
"Come in then."
"Mike's here to see you." I heard him whisper.
"MIKE!" I heard from in the room. "Shit." I muttered to myself. No wonder the hockey player hates me. I thought scrunching up my face.
"You coming in?"
"Uhhh, well you see I kind of cheated on her and we've been broken up for years and now I guess she's married. It's more than a bit awkward." I said honestly.
"Well we need to get her remembering again, so give it your best shot. " He said moving his body to let me into the room.
"Rachel what did you do to yourself?" I said shaking my head sadly.
"They said it was a bad car accident. I'm sorry if I worried you Mike, I hope you didn't think I was dead."
"No I could never think that. I'm just glad you're okay. " I said truthfully.
"Was I really asleep for five months?"
"Yah." I nodded.
"How do I know that Jon guy?"
"Right. Well…story telling time."
***************
Pat's POV:
I called Ellie and told her to come, and that I needed reinforcements before going in. Mike had just gone in, as Ellie texted me that they were just on their way up. That's the good thing about living a few blocks away.
"God you're making me run with a kid in my hand." She said laughing and passing me little Patrick.
"Hey there little guy." I said smiling down at him. "Hey guys." I said to Brandon and Ellie.
"She's awake huh?" Brandon asked.
"That sucks about the whole memory thing, she probably won't recognize me either." Ellie said frowning.
"You got Bella?" I asked Brandon who was holding onto the little girl currently grabbing his nose.
"Yah, yah I got her. Go see your wife Kaner. You too fiancé."
"On it." Ellie and I made our way to the door. I leaned against the door frame just taking in the fact that she was awake. It was killing me seeing her talking with Mike as if they had been together the whole time. Ellie squeezed my hand as if she sensed it. I smiled down at her and looked back at my wife awake and talking after five months of constant worrying about whether or not she would ever wake up.
"Amazing." El whispered beside me. I nodded.
"Miracle." I whispered back.
Then I was brought back into reality, and quickly, a little piece of my heart breaking even though I was expecting it.
"Who is that?" I heard Rachel ask Mike. Ellie squeezed my hand again. Mike looked towards us. If looks could kill Mike would be dead from the glare he was receiving from Ellie.
"Ellie."
"Mike. Nice to see you again." She said snarkily.
"Who's she? You're not cheating on me are you?" Both Ellie and I chuckled a bit at that.
"What's so funny?"
"Right." Ellie started. "Firstly I'm your best friend. Second you and Mike have been broken up for over two years. Thirdly we live in Chicago not Ottawa or London. Fourthly you play hockey for the Blackhawks. Fifthly Pat here is you husband. Sixthly you have two kids, one's one and a half years old and the other you well gave birth while still in the coma. Seventhly you were injured in a head on car crash, and have been lying on this bed for five months. Number eight you've completely lost your senses and your friggin memory and have this friggin idiot here. Et voila your life." Ellie said curtseying.
"The hell?" She said shocked. "Mike?"
"She's kind of right. I might have cheated on you a couple years back."
"Yah with my girlfriend." I scoffed. The deer caught in headlights look was priceless.
"Right anyways, we haven't talked in years. I didn't even know you had kids or were married or even the fact that you started playing hockey again. Sorry but I've got to go." He said kissing her on the forehead and walking out the door, apologizing on his way out.
"I don't think this is helping her." I whispered to Ellie. "Maybe we should just come back tomorrow when her parents get here."
"I think you're right, she seems agitated."
"Right. I'm just going to say bye then we can go." I said walking over and sitting beside the bed.
"Look Rach. I know you don't recognize me and who knows maybe you never will again only time will tell. I just want to say that I love you, and even if you don't remember me I'm happy to see you alive and responsive. Your family is flying in tonight and I'll make sure they come see you tomorrow. Good night Rach, I love you." I said kissing the other side of her forehead and giving her hand a squeeze before taking my baby back from Ellie and heading back out to Brandon. I was happy, but on the outside I probably looked pathetic.
"She'll get her memory back. If not just make her fall in love with you again just like the first time."
"I know. Its just when she asked who I was it was like a little piece of my heart broke. It's just going to take time getting used to her not remembering me or anything for that matter." I said. She gave me a hug and the three of us walked out of the hospital together. I fastened the kids into their seats and headed home. Bella crawled around by my feet as I changed Pat and fed him before settling him in his crib after he fell asleep.
"Hey, my big girl how are you feeling today." I said picking her up and keeping her above my head. "Daddy's feeling happy and sad. Mommy's awake. She'll get to see you guys again soon. " I said as I kissed her, and she did it back. "That's my girl. Give daddy all your kisses. No other boys for you. No hockey players." I said laughing as we settled down and flicked on the TV. Bella was growing up so quickly I thought as she snuggled her body into mine on the couch. I could never have known that kids would have brought me this much joy. They were the only things that got me through everything, they were my little angels. I watched TV, until I heard the knock of Rachel's parent's and maybe brothers.
"Patrick." Rachel's mom said hugging me.
"She's awake." I said smiling and returning the hug.
"Yeah. She is." She said smiling.
"Ahh my little one, are you still up?" She said scooping up Bella as she crawled over to her Grandma, Grandpa, and uncles.
"Haha. Come on in guys. I have the guest rooms ready for you. I hope you two." I said pointing at Rachel's brothers "don't mind sharing a bed." I said making a face.
"Not as long as it's a good sized bed. Dyl here likes to kick." Scott said chuckling, and getting a punch jokingly back from his brother.
"Boys."
"Haha yes." I said laughing. "The bed will be sufficiently large. Let's go show them to their rooms Bella." I said as she held her arms out meaning she wanted me to take her. I let them all get settled in and put Bella to bed.

I said good night to the boys, and then said good night to well my second parents and then headed off to bed. I brought Pat's crib down to my room which was located on the opposite side of the living room as I figured he would cry at some point during the night. My body was taking it better the second time around, though it was still tiring. I left the monitor on Bella just incase, but normally she would sleep through the night no problem hoping tonight was not an exception.

Great job

Amazing job. Wasn't expecting him to have another kid from a different relationship in this story. Kudos for them for not resenting each other or the kid though. Great job
